April 20 was the day that the Deepwater Hori-zon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig was leaking oil which caused gas prices to increase. With the oil spilling for 70 days before getting it covered, an estimated 660,000 gallons of oil was spilled. Pictures from news.cnet.com.

In Jan 2010, Haiti was struck with a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Millions of people were affected by the earthquake caus-ing them to be homeless. An estimating 616,000 people were killed or injured. The earthquake caused major damage to the capital, Port-au-Prince. Pictures from connect.in.com.

In Super Bowl 2010, the New Orleans Saints, beat the Indianapolis Colts with a final score of 31-17. 74,059 people gathered in the Louisiana Superdome to watch their favorite teams compete for the win. Pictures from masslive.com.

In the conclusion to the Toy Story trilogy, the toys wind up at a horrible day care facility where the toys have to find a way back to Andy’s house before he goes away to college. On February 12th, the 2010 Win-ter Olympics began in Vancouver, Canada. After 16 days of competition, USA was at the top of the charts with 37 total medals, followed by Germany with 30 and Canada with 27. Pictures from technobuzz.net.

The Biggest LoserWeight Loss. Temptation.

Effort. Team Work. Goals. All these things describe what has been happening at Cypress Ranch High School. January 7 marked the begin-ning of Cypress Ranch’s Biggest Loser Spring Competition, based on the popular television show where contenders compete to see who can lose the most weight, Cypress Ranch staff members paired up in hopes to win first place with a prize of $992.

“If I won I would spend the money on my family for spring break,” Assistant Principal Dale Cowser said.

In order to participate in the competition, members had to pay $20 each. The money collected as well as penalty payments will be given to the winner. Penalty payments apply if anyone skips a weigh in or gains weight.

“I agree 100% with the penalty rules because last year they

were abused,” Assistant Principal Nikki Chandler said

Last year’s competitors are excited to get another chance to achieve their weight loss goal. Many have changed their techniques to be even more successful.

“Last year I just ate right, but did not work out, this year I plan to eat right and add working out to my schedule,” Cowser said.

Every Friday the staff members weigh in at the nurses office to see if they’re on track.

As a strategy to win some staff members plan to tempt others in hopes of them falling back in their weight loss goal. Many competitors share ways they plan to stray away from

possible temptations. “I plan to deal with temp-

tations by drinking more wa-ter,” Attendance Secretary Zois Rodgers said.

Though the temptations may be hard, many com-petitors have a plan to stay on track and avoid being thrown off. Many staff members have their own way of losing weight.

“Exercising and main-taining a low fat diet[helps me lose weight],” Rodgers said.

The contest ends and winners are announced on March 11, but until then contestants will continue their daily routines in hopes of becoming the next Cy-press Ranch Biggest Loser of 2011.
