2016 saw a great many changes come to the fore that had been building for years. Events that had been stagnant, unchanged and under attended, continued in that downward spiral and some just simply vanished. Most notable was the abandonment of the Northwest by the fading and under-attended International Motorcycle Show (IMS). There was no show at all after 13 years of continually placing the show in December, usually 2 weeks before Christmas. The final gasp was placing the 2015 show in Portland using another ill chosen and ill conceived date, and of course, it was largely seen as a failure. So the 2016-2017 show schedule included no west coast shows at all, except Southern California this past November, with all other show dates pretty much on the eastern seaboard. The one year they got it right was when they placed the show in Seattle in late February just before the traditional beginning of our riding season. Let’s hope that, should they return to our area, they make that happen again.

Several other older, more staid (as in boring) events also flew under the attendance radar, and in some cases are doubtful to return in 2017— certainly not in their present form. On the plus side of the ledger, a couple of new events really kicked ass and made a huge positive impact on the summer event line up. The two biggest were The Pendleton Motorcycle Rally, and Bikers at the Beach in Ocean Shores. Both were new, exciting events that had great bands, fun activities and they were both rewarded with record turnouts. Both will be back again this year

and both promise to have awesome bands and some fresh new activities that guarantee continued excitement and interest. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the 17th Annual Run 21 was again, a smashing success, and the 6th Annual Rock & Rally for the Troops had record attendance. In addition, some of the smaller, more local events also saw record turn outs, did very well and will also return.

On the motorcycle front, we saw Harley-Davidson and Indian settle into a very competitive and interesting rivalry over the past 3 years only to have Harley raise the bar by coming out with an all new barn burner of a motor, and major suspension and electrical improvements, which got everyone’s attention. Now we will see how Indian and its sister company, Victory, may respond. This is all good for us as riders because competition always results in better products, more innovation, and gives us more choices. Stand by and watch it happen. History is a great teacher if you pay attention, and these companies are on the verge of major product upgrades to be sure.

On the rider front, I don’t think it came as any surprise when we learned late in 2016 that distracted driving is now the cause of more accidents and injuries than impairment. In fact 17 states now show figures that verify that, along with another 14 states trending the same way. National figures from the Feds won’t be out until late 2017, but early indications are that distracted driving is an epidemic. To that end several tech giants are looking at

tech based solutions that may even include your devices not working if the car is moving. Meanwhile every state in the country has stepped up enforcement, and more states than ever have outlawed using hand held devices while driving. The trick is to get the drivers to pay attention and obey the law. That simply has not happened. The latest wrinkle is having live accidents, including several fatal incidents, live streamed on Facebook! Chilling to say the least. As riders, we all need to be aware and ever more vigilant. And when we become drivers, lets not join the pack of idiots that we curse roundly while riding, by talking and texting!

Having looked back, I think we can all agree that 2016 had far more positives than negatives. That sets us up for a really fun and exciting 2017. Now mind you, I am saying this as the polar vortex in late December has turned my office into a carpeted version of the North Pole, and the weather report tells me my long delayed trip to visit my sister in Ft. Lauderdale should be scheduled soon, but I am forever the optimist—I know this will pass. Lets face it, climate change deniers aside, the weather in the NW over the past few years has gotten better and better. Winters are shorter, Spring is earlier, Summers are longer and hotter, and Fall, while short, has seen good riding verging into early November. So despite todays temps in the high 20’s while I am writing, Spring and a great 2017 riding season are just around the corner!

BLACK THURSDAY: As you can see from the full page ad on page 11 in this issue, the Annual “Black Thursday” is just a couple of weeks away on January 19th. ABATE of WA, along with several other motorcyclists rights and advocacy groups, need your support. Your attendance is not only welcomed,

it is NEEDED if we are to move forward in several key areas this year. At the top of the “Wish List” for just about all of us is the passage of a viable and effective Lane Splitting bill. Given our incredible traffic growth over the past several years the passage of this bill will increase rider safety exponentially at a time when it is greatly needed. Three major motorcycle insurers now say that rear end collisions are their most frequently reported accidents. Lane splitting will give us the ability to move safely, albeit slowly, thru stopped or backed up traffic, and that will cut the risk of being rear ended dramatically.WE NEED THIS BILL, and only your voice and your support can give ABATE, along with the other rider groups pushing for the law, the voter clout they need to push it thru and bring it home. It’s time to step up and not just assume that “the other guy” will get it done for you.

If you are one of those who don’t think your voice and your vote counts consider this: In our recent Presidential election less than 80,000 voters spread across 5 key states determined the outcome of an election that saw 122 MILLION votes cast. Think about that for a moment. Your vote counts especially in a state like ours, that saw the least number of votes cast for the Presidency in our state’s history. Less than 50% of eligible voters cast a ballot. Your support, your activism and your pressure on your local State Senator and legislator will now count even more. So bundle up, stand up, and SHOW UP for this year’s Black Thursday on January 19th at our State Capital in Olympia.

See you back here next month when we fill you in on our plans for 2017.Happy New Year!

MD

Happy 2017 to all our readers and advertisers! If 2017 is even half as interesting, unique and crazy as 2016 was, we are in for a very eventful, interesting and exciting year. There will also be some real head scratching moments, I assure you. It has become customary over the years to take a brief look back at the year just passed before launching into our “predictions” for the coming year. In the words of a philosopher whose name escapes me, “In order to know where you are going, you have to look at where you’ve been.” Lets do that, but keep it strictly in the realm of the motorcycle world. I think we have all had enough politics for quite awhile, at least I have.

The 30-Daddy by Ridewright Wheels Cleans The Crowdedness

Anaheim, CA -- The wheelwrights at Ridewright Wheels have detected patterns of customers wanting to have a little more air and light show through a fat spoke wheel. “Some tastes and styles wanted a leaner, cleaner look” reports Sam Wa-kim, owner/founder of Ridewright Wheels. Given that everything need-ed to make a solid wheel is in house at the shop, the call was simply an-swered and prototypes were built, tested and proven. The design is now released to the market.

Ridewright introduces the 30-Daddy – a light version of the original Fat Dad-dy 50-spoke design that took the industry by storm years back. All the same options found in a Fat Daddy remained such as: Colors, Spoke styles, Brake configuration, ABS, H-D/Indian/Victory fitment, One-off custom special project treatments, Tubeless or tube, with or without seal… but a slightly lower cost is enjoyed by the customer due to less materials and labor needed for a wheelwright to hand-build the wheel.

30-Daddy’s can be bought online with standard, popular color options and other setup options at RidewrightWheels.com/collections/new-30-spoke-30-daddy-wheels.

Story & Photos by Kelly Quinn aka Throttle Girl

Where can you ride miles of iconic twisting road along the Pacific Ocean, rally roads leading you through famous Redwood Groves and fern lined forests? Where can you camp with your friends in wide-open meadows surrounded by the largest herd of Roosevelt Elk in the world? Put a world-class stage, kick ass music line-up and vendors in the middle of it all and welcome to Elk Country RV Resort & Campground in Trinidad, CA, home of the Highway 101 Run! I had the privilege of emceeing this first annual event July 14-17, 2016. When I got to Elk Country (that being an amazing adventure in and of itself) I was absolutely blown away, the word ‘amazing’ simply doesn’t do it justice. Located north of the seaport town of Eureka, Ca on the world famous stretch of Hwy 101 called the ‘Redwood Hwy;’ Elk Country covers nearly 200 acres of Nor Cal’s pristine Coastal environment, features it’s own private lake, hiking trails and did I mention resident elk herd? All this is set in a stunning wonderland full of large old-growth trees across the hwy from the Pacific Ocean crashing along the shoreline. There’s even an old red schoolhouse, historical to the area that tells a story of days gone by. All size RV hook ups available, tent camping sites, clean facilities and a camp store, this place has it all and more. The promoters of the Hwy 101 Run pulled out all the stops, why not bring in one of the best stages and audio techs in the country? Known for rocking some of music’s biggest names, when .38 Special is your headlining band, you do it right. Other bands such as The Fryed Brothers Band, Aca/Daca and one of my favorite tribute bands, Skynnyn Lynnyrd rocked the crowd. Days were filled with iconic rides, biker games, a poker run and raffle with proceeds benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Northern NV and even a chance to win a brand new 2017 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic! The one and only Monte Perlin showed up with his Globe-O-Cross and

cage partner Michael Downey, entertaining us all with his motorcycle stunts. Vendors included food, special label Hwy 101 wine, leather, jewelry and even Dyno testing on site. I’d talk about the people and riders who came out but instead I’m going let you experience this for yourself. I will say, I’m proud to boast I made friends I will have and be able to share miles with the rest of my life…The Highway 101 Run will be become an iconic event, yep, I’m claiming it. Part of me hesitates to write this, the intimacy of the beginning stages

of any event is a special gift but I know I have to share my stoke with you, everyone deserves to know that places and events like this do exist. The organizers have a long-term vision and are committed to this badass event in one of the coolest locations in the world. Just like it’s special label wine, it’ll just keep getting better

with time, growing and taking a shape all its own. Bands and dates are being locked in now for July 2017 and will soon be announced! Hope tosee you at the second annual Highway 101 Run, ‘till then; you know what to do, Throttle Up!

BARNFIND BONANZAFOUR MOTORCYCLE SIDECARS DISCOVERED IN A

GLOUCESTERSHIRE BARN FOR SALE WITH H&H CLASSICS

Mark Bryan of H&H Classics Motorcycle Department, says, “Sometimes you just get lucky!” All four will be going under the hammer at H&H Clas-sics next big bike sale at Donington Park on November 16th.Recently a pair of creaking barn doors swung open to reveal a jackpot – no fewer than four motorbikes with sidecars from the 1920s and 1930’s covered in the dust of two decades in deepest Gloucestershire. They had been col-lected by the same family who loved motorbike sidecars. The four bikes were scheduled for a museum that never happened says Mark Bryan. What Mark found in fabulous original condition were a 1924 AJS Model D Combo; a 1932 BSA G12 Combo used by the Bath City Police and still bearing the name; a 1930 BSA Sloper Combo; and a 1925 Quadrant Combo.Mark comments: “It would have been a very happy result to find one of these marvellous old combos in the barn, to find four was amazing. I could barely be-lieve it at first.”

Estimated prices he says would be:

16 JANUARY 2017 JANUARY 2017 17

As many of you know, I retired from the political and lobbying world at the end of 2013 and have been spending the winter months in Palm Springs and the rest of the year in Seattle. My official legal home has until now been Washington. But that has changed, and as of this new year, I’m officially a newbie “Californian.” I’ll be doing the reverse “snowbird” thing – spending most of the year in the desert, and escaping to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest in the summer when it’s 125 degrees here, and visiting often too. But don’t worry, I’ll still be the grumpy curmudgeon, freely offering up news and advice about politics and riding in Washington and the Northwest. I’m not going away.

So why the change in residency? One reason is, it’s gotten damn expensive in Seattle as you all know, and there is no sign of that changing. Here’s a great case in point: I surprised the clerk at the DMV here in California when I went to register the vehicles and she told me the total for my registration and plates and I said, “Are you sure?” She said, “Yes, we are a bit more expensive than other states; people are often shocked.” I laughed and told her to turn over the old Washington registration she had in her hands for my Hummer and look at that total. Her eyes about popped out of her head and she said “Wow”! My California registration for my truck was about 1/3 of what I paid in Washington, with better roads and less traffic.

But it’s not all sunshine when it comes to becoming an official resident of the Golden State. I had to take the written exam for both vehicles and motorcycles in order to get a new drivers license. So like a good citizen I picked up a copy of the handbook for both vehicles and motorcycles and took them home and read them – twice. I took the practice tests in the back and passed, then made my appointment

for the test (a cool feature here by the way so you don’t have to wait hours in a waiting room).

You know these tests. I swear they are designed to get you to fail by asking tricky questions where all the answers are partially right, and only one is more partially right than the others. The system instantly tells you if you got a question wrong. You are allowed three wrong answers and the fourth kicks you out with a FAIL! and a big red “X” like on a game show, only without the loud buzzer.

I got a perfect score of 30 out of 30 on the driver license part, and so it was on to the motorcycle test. I figured I’d ace this since I did so well on the other one. I’ve been riding since before I could drive, and I consider myself a damn good rider. I’ve taken the advanced riders course several times. I taught group riding skills for HOG. I think I know what I’m doing. Well, not according to the folks at California DMV. Apparently I don’t know squat! I missed four questions and I wasn’t even half-way done! Shocked, I went to the counter and the clerk asked if I wanted an immediate retest. One is allowed three attempts at the test before failing. Since my Washington one expired in less than a month I had to pass and soon. My pride got the best of me and I said “Yes” and immediately went back in and failed yet again! How could this be? I passed the drivers test flawlessly and here I can’t pass the damn motorcycle part?

I mean really? I failed! Twice! Me! The clerk said you have one more chance and I said, “I’ll reschedule” and left with my tail between my legs. For a week I would read the manual cover to cover each night before bed. Hell, I practically memorized it. A week later I go back and get the same clerk. “Last try,” she said with a smile. Gee thanks for the pressure, I thought. I went in. I carefully and methodically

thought out each question and possible reply. I nervously chose my answer and each time before I submitted the answer I genuflected, prayed and crossed my fingers, and I’m an agnostic! Things were going along fine, but then I missed two in a row. I was starting to panic. Then I get to this question:

“The best way to avoid injury while riding is: A) ride in a fast straight line. B) Ride defensively using the SEE method. C) Be aware of the road and traffic conditions and adjust riding speed accordingly. D) Wear a helmet.”

The more logical answer to me was B: “Ride defensively using the SEE method.” But nooooooo! According to the State of California, best way to avoid injury while riding is D) “Wear a helmet.” I got the big red “X” on my screen. That was my third miss. If I missed one more, I failed and couldn’t retest for 60 days and would have an expired Washington license in my pocket. The cuss words floating in the air above my head (in my cartoon thought bubble) were many. I plodded on and three questions later I get a “Congratulations You Have Passed” notice.

I almost fainted from relief. And it doesn’t matter in the end what I missed and why. I know I’m a good rider, and I have the license in my wallet to make it all legal. But oh, I hope I don’t have to take that test ever again. And to my friends in ABATE, I have an idea for a bill in California for your CA chapter to get working on. It has to do with the motorcycle license test and a certain question…

Well here we are again, the start of brand new year. We toss out last year’s calendar and start with a brand new blank one. A little over six years ago I started writing this column for Quick Throttle. The idea was to cover political

and policy ideas affecting riders in the Northwest as well as talk about the joys of riding and being part of this amazing

community. Now, nearly 75 columns later, I’m still here. Well most of the time I’m here, and so we figured it was time to give

this column a new look.

20 JANUARY 2017 JANUARY 2017 21

Written by Diana OlmsteadPhotos by Cassandra Olmstead, Robin & David Hudson

In the days preceding Saturday, December 3rd, motorcycle riders from all over the Pacific Northwest prepared their bikes for the most anticipated event of the Christmas Season – The Olympia Toy Run!

Our family prepared by picking out a dozen toys and items for boys and girls between the ages of 1-18. We bought Barbie’s, Lego’s, Matchbox cars, tea sets, coloring books, remote control cars and a few other items to donate.

The night before the Toy Run we cranked up the Christmas music in the garage and got busy decorating our bikes with garland and bows! Then we packed all of our toys into Christmas wrapped boxes and bungeed them onto our passenger seats! Yep, we were excited and ready, and so were our kids and granddaughter!

The next morning, we bundled up in long johns, leathers, scarves and hats. I didn’t have any heated gear on, but I did put a few hand warmers and

body warmers in strategically placed areas and I was as toasty as can be on the ride in.

As we rolled off I-5 at about 10:15am and took Exit 108, we looked to our right at the South Sound Center Sears parking lot where all of the Olympia Toy Run festivities began. Hundreds of bikes had already rolled in and the gates had only been open for 15 minutes.

We parked our bikes, and then made our way to the man that has made this annual charity event happen for 39 straight years – Santa! Or as we call him Santa Joe! There he was, leaning against his bike sporting his bright red Santa suit and soft white beard, looking as cool and kind as ever!

This year Santa asked my youngest granddaughter Audrey to ride with him in the parade. She was so excited! For an entire week my little peanut had practiced her parade wave. As soon as she saw Santa she made a beeline to his side. She wanted to show him that she was ready to ride; she had her little boots, leather chaps, chain, jacket and bandana on. She was so stinkin’ cute.

I managed to peel her away from Santa for a while so we could go check out all of the vendors in vendor row. We warmed with some hot cocoa and then gathered around the portable heater at the Northwest Harley booth where we visited with our friends from the “Friendliest Shop on the West Coast”! The

dealership has been a longtime valued Sponsor of the Olympia Toy Run. Their support over the years has been nothing short of amazing and generous. Every year, they host a free biscuits and gravy breakfast for all of the riders heading to the Toy Run. If you haven’t stopped by and enjoyed their Toy Run breakfast, I encourage you to check it out next year.

After warming up we decided to walk around a bit and check out all of the other vendors who were offering up something for just about anyone. There were booths selling and promoting a variety of things – such as hot coffee, donuts, kettlecorn, hot dogs, heated gear, Harley merchandise, powder coating & pinstriping, and more. Another one of the Olympia Toy Run Sponsors, 96.9 KAYO & Olympia’s KGY 95.3, were on hand doing a live remote

broadcast letting all of their listeners know about all of the fun that was taking place.

After checking out the vendors we decided to go check out all of the bikes. By now there were thousands of bikes parked. All different types too! There were choppers, bobbers, rat bikes, trikes, cruisers, baggers and dual sports! Every make and model you could think of took part! If you had a street legal bike you were welcome to participate. Many of the bikes were decked out with Christmas lights, candy canes, garland and of course, toys! Lots and lots of toys!

Admission to this charity event was $10 single/$15 couple or 1-2 new unwrapped toys. It was a common sight to see bikes overflowing with toys well exceeding the suggested

admission donation. I’m not surprised by that, anyone who knows anything about the motorcycle community knows that bikers have the biggest hearts and are the most generous group of people.

The local motorcycle community shows up every year by the thousands, in all types of weather, because they know that local children from low income families are counting on Santa and his (leather clad) elves to provide a few presents for them to open on Christmas morning. Admit it; there is nothing more meaningful than knowing that a child will squeal with delight because Santa remembered them!

100% of the donations collected at the Olympia Toy Run and at various designated toy drop locations are distributed to families via the Salvation Army Toy N’ Joy Shop. It is truly amazing that in a matter of hours, without any hype or coverage from the local TV stations, the motorcycle community can gather together respectfully, filled with holiday joy, and accomplish so much. The Salvation Army counts on this event to help them meet the needs of the less fortunate.

At 11am the Tenino Motorcycle Drill Team and the Seattle Cossacks performed. These men have supported the Olympia Toy Run for many, many years. They are a definitely a huge part of the Toy Run. The crowd loved watching them perform. This was the first time that my granddaughter Audrey had the pleasure of watching them perform. Watching her excitement level peak and listening to her comments was the funniest thing ever. At one point when the Cossacks were performing she yelled out “Nana, look, that guy is upside down!” And a few minutes later she was jumping up and down, pulling on my arm saying “Look Nana, he is riding his bike

backwards! Can you do that?” I said, “No, Nana cannot do that, but it sure is cool watching them do it!” She said, “How come you can’t do that?” I said, “Because I’m old” thinking that would be then end of it. Then without missing a beat, she said, “Well those guys are old and they can do it!” Hahaha! Sorry Team!

After the stunt teams performed we headed back to our bikes as it was almost time for the parade to start! Papa and I got Audrey all bundled up and helped her into Santa’s sidecar. She was ready and grinning from ear to ear!

At one o’ clock sharp Santa fired up his bike and officially began the parade with the twist of his throttle! Following directly behind him were over 3000 motorcycles!

A bit of liquid sunshine started to come down on us but that was ok, nothing could dampen our holiday spirit and that’s what riding in the Pacific Northwest is all about. There were hundreds of families and individuals who had lined the streets to watch the motorcycle parade roll on by! The spectators stood, bundled up, with umbrellas in one hand while waving with their other hand. The

Olympia Toy Run has truly become a community holiday event. Many of the spectators were holding signs that read “Thank you!” and “Merry Christmas!”

The parade came to an end at Marathon Park on Deschutes Parkway. For as far as you could see, bikes lined both sides of street, it was an awesome sight to behold as the rain began to really pour.

The sidewalk was jam packed with wet riders carrying armfuls of toys and bicycles to donate. Several people walked up and made large cash donations. They did not seek notoriety, they preferred to stay anonymous and blend in just like everyone around them. They said that they simply wanted to give back to their local community and show their support of the Olympia Toy

Run. To those individuals, we thank you.

With the rain coming down hard, Santa Joe and Major Lum of The Salvation Army made their way to the podium to wrap things up by thanking everyone who attended, donated and supported the 39th Annual Olympia Toy Run.

This year 3,000-3,500 riders participated in the motorcycle parade. However many more people came to the staging area to simply drop off their donations. A total of 5,238 new toys & misc items were donated valued at $131,000.00!!! (Donations are still trickling in so that number will rise in the coming weeks) Plus, $11,400.00 in cash was collected at the gate and donated directly to the Salvation Army! After the Coalition pays all of their

expenses associated with the 39th Annual Olympia Toy Run (courtesy of their amazing sponsors) they will be making another sizable cash donation to the Salvation Army.

None of this would’ve been possible without the behind the scenes work of the Olympia Toy Coalition members. Thank you to the representatives of the following groups: Olympia Chapter - ABATE of WA, Mason Co Chapter - ABATE of WA, Descendants of 51, Gold Wing Road Riders’ Association, Gold Wing Touring Association, Olympia Light Riders-CMA, Society’s Deviants MC, Combat Vets Motorcycle Assoc, and South Sound H.O.G.. The men and women on the Coalition volunteer and meet up year round to put on this huge, well-orchestrated, charity event.

It is also extremely important that we give a huge “Thank you” to our 39th Annual Olympia Toy Run Sponsors.

Because of their generosity to step up and cover the costs associated with putting together this amazing charity event, 100% of your donations went straight to the kids! “Thank you” to: Northwest Harley-Davidson, 96.9 KAYO Country/Olympia’s KGY 95.3, The Westside Tavern, Quick Throttle Magazine, D&F Custom Leathers, Northwest Guide Baits and Island Johnny.

We’d also like to thank the 523rd Transportation Company from JBLM for bringing two trucks and loading them with toy donations.

Quick Throttle Magazine is a proud longtime sponsor of the Olympia Toy Run and we are extremely happy that within a matter of hours the motorcycle community came together to help make Christmas a joyous one for thousands of kids.

Santa Joe and the Olympia Toy Run Coalition send out a heartfelt thank you to every rider who brought toys or made a cash donation. Thank you for remembering that the Olympia Toy Run is a charity event and “It’s all about the kids!”

Next year be sure to take part in the 40th Annual Olympia Toy Run and 40 years of helping The Salvation Army help kids via their Toy n’ Joy Shop!

Pure FUN, at any costBy CD

Your practical side says, “So little storage room, limited protection in a crash, why is there just one tire in back? It’s the answer to a question that nobody asked. Oh and it’s $29,000?!”But then you squeeze into the thing, you fire it up and it’s satisfying…You put it in gear and you pull away, and a smile creeps onto your entirely-too-serious face. In your first turn, you realize “Oh crap, I’ve got to pay attention here,” and that

pleases you, because it means that not everyone who drives this will do it well…then you settle into the twists and turns and you are smiling full-time now, or in my case, laughing maniacally.

P u r e FUN at any cost? You’re damn right. Whether you get the base model at 22k or this pretty, yet untamed beast at $28,500, I truly doubt you’ll spend a single day with regret. There are many reasons this “thing” won’t work for many people. It’s not a motorcycle, yet it’s not a car either. It’s somewhere in between, with some of the shortcomings of both. But it also possesses the raunchier attitudes of both, and that’s where it hooks me.

When you take off in this reverse trike, the first thing you think is, “Go Kart.” Simple as that. Engine, frame, tires, steering wheel. It’s all you feel and most of what you see. And it’s all you need. It’s raw and basic.

When I first reviewed this machine back in QT (Jan. 2015), I had driven it up and then down Mulholland Drive. That canyon carving ad-venture proved this beast’s prowess, and we all know how that road can test a person’s mettle too. I won’t ever admit to being scared ha ha…let’s just say, the road commanded my attention. And when I demanded more from the Slingshot, it gave it to me.

So now, almost 2 years later, would I like it as much just buzzing around town, running errands, picking up my daughter from school, and driving to (ugghh) the office on the freeway? Let’s face

it - not every trip is gonna be Mulhol-land, Ortega Hwy. or Jerome, AZ. I think your toy (be it a motorcycle, boat, RV or reverse trike) should be fun the minute you get on it - so those errands and quick shopping trips become more fun too…

Well the first thing I found is I was a bit short on legroom. I’m a six-footer, and many cars don’t give me the legroom I want. So that might be just me. Point is, I noticed this more just run-ning around town, not battling turns and spitting gravel up on the mountain. That said there was still plenty to do and see, to distract me from that, and I enjoyed the hell out of the average quicky-mart run.

Picking my daughter up at school? Oh baby,

lemme tell ya. There is probably no finer drug than when young kids practically fall off their skateboards to get a better look at what you’re rid-ing/driving in on (my theory is, kids are cool and they acknowledge cool, without first deciding if you’re cool, or if they should show you how cool you are, or if you make more money than they do, etc.. Ok I digress). A crowd of teens quickly formed around us, oohh’ing and ahh’ing, asking if was the Batmobile, and could they have a ride. My girl feigned embarrassment, but she was se-cretly eating up the attention.

And honestly, kids or not, this happens every-where you go. Most people will smile, or nod or actually ask questions. The added sweetener for me was, this thing is wife-friendly…it’s comfort-able for the passenger, it gives jumpy women a

Page 14: quickthrottle.comquickthrottle.com/DMAG/NW_January_2017/QTNW_JAN17.pdfPAGES 28-29 - BIKER FRIENDLY BUSINESS PAGE 30 - legislator will now count even more. BIKER BUDDY’S PAGE 32 -

26 JANUARY 2017 JANUARY 2017 27

better sense of security than a bike, and it has a BIG glove box, which BTW locks, which is criti-cal. This thing IS short on storage, but behind the seats the compartments have expanded a bit, and the glovebox really is large and convenient. Lisa had a LOT of fun riding around in this Slingshot, and she asked to go out more (praise the Lord!) We kept light jackets, two ball caps, and a few other doodads in the glovebox, and had room to spare.

You can even hose down the interior. Not sure I’d do that, but I can tell you that after a night outside, the dew collects right on the seat surfaces, and you can sit in a puddle if you’re not careful. But simply wipe it down and go.

On the freeway, it’s manners are….ok. Nothing to shout about. It’s clearly not meant for that appli-cation, but it will do the job. The standard wind-screen isn’t much; you look over it easily if you’re near six foot. And to me that’s preferable because I want the wind in the face and no “filter” of the sights around me. But on the freeway, my head is blown around quite a bit. I know some Slingshot owners wear helmets there and not on side streets, but I can’t imagine the helmet being comfortable at all here. Just more weight to be buffeted. You can get at least 2 other size windshields to try, and those would certainly help on the freeway, and keep you from a severe facial impact with a large bug or pebble.

And speaking of helmets - when these machines first came out, no one was sure whether you need-ed a lid or not. Now most states have clarified what they think these Slingshots are, and thus whether you need head protection. In most states including Cali and the Southwest, it’s generally accepted now that you do not need one. Reason being, you have seat belts, roll-over protection in the headrests, etc. However, and this is a big one - since you register it as a motorcycle, a nasty cop (and I’ve met quite a few of those) could insist that you need to wear a helmet. That said, I drove past literally 4 police cars on 4 separate occasions, 2 of those where I

pulled up right next to them, and they barely gave me a look. One did give me a thumbs up, so that was fun.

Now, climbing in and out of the thing - well there’s no easy way to look cool doing it. True, you can jump in like Thomas Magnum (sorry for the old guy reference) and I even figured out a way to jump out, because getting out is way less cool - you’ve got one leg on the ground, you’re squeezing the other leg past the steering wheel, but in a stiff-leg, Monty Python kind of movement, which quickly becomes an “Oh they can see my panties” kind of knock-knee twist that just feels…wrong. Hence the learning to jump out move. Way more Magnum, Bro.

I could let MANY things go with this bitchin’ ride, but one thing that concerns me is when driving ag-gressively, and shifting from 2nd to 3rd, I often hit a “wall” in the gearbox, and completely miss the shift. I did this several times. Now, you can blame pilot error (and I’ll take it) but my daily driver is a 6-speed sports car. I was able to adjust my style somewhat but if I was really hot-dogging, it hap-pened more often than I’d like. I don’t yet know if this is just me, or if it’s an area where they saved

some bucks, to get this down to a 22-28k package. The Design team at Polaris tell me there’s nothing they’re aware of, and have not heard about this is-sue from any other owners or test drivers. And I’ll admit that I never had this issue when I first drove the base model back in 2015…

It’s still a hell of a package, especially at that price.

And the tunes? It’s not the most sophisticated sound system, but like the rest on the Slingshot, it works and it’s all you need. One plus is the volume automatically adjusts with your speed. Granted, when you’re at speed you are hearing more engine and gearing than stereo (and that’s as it should be damnit!) and sometimes the unit sounds more like an old-timey radio than a “Media console with Rockford Fosgate 4-speaker 100-watt system.” But then when you’re slowing down, or cruising up to a light, the sounds are an integral part of the expe-rience and if you liked your favorite tunes before, you’re positively living ‘em now, and it’s part of the music video of your life that you’ll replay when stuck at your desk, like that bitchin’ mix tape you made back in high school. The soundtrack of your youth, man. No reason we have to give it ALL up, though.

So is it a car, or a trike, or what? Who cares. It’s fun, it’s reasonably priced, and there aren’t that many around. Oh and it’s just plain cool.

Check the web for many, many accessory and cus-tomizing options. But to see and drive the Sling-shot.

EDITOR’S UPDATE: Since this writing there have been two recalls on the Slingshot. Both were fairly serious, but I checked with the suits at Po-laris and was told that parts were being shipped to their dealers as we speak, as were new Slingshot units produced after the issues were identified and resolved. However, YOU need to be sure, so visit the dealers and ask lots of questions, drive one and verify that your unit has been fully inspected.

Klock Werks FLARE™ Windshield Tested at Full Throttle! There are always the latest & greatest aftermarket products coming out for Harley Davidson motorcycles every week. Many make claims that they can do this or that – when compared to the Original Equipment models. Some do not deliver as advertised – this particular one went above and beyond expectations. A few years ago, I had a Klock Werks FLARE™ windshield on a 2009 HD Road Glide and it made a HUGE DIFFERENCE so I was excited to hear that they now had them for: Softails, Road Kings, and Sportsters as well as Victory’s, Indians, and Japanese bikes as well.

So I ordered one for my latest bike. I received a large Klock Werks FLARE™ light tint windshield for my 2014 Heritage Softail, and was “really amazed” by the performance. As soon as I took it out of the box, I could see an obvious difference between the two windshields. (see the attached pictures). The OE HD shield was pretty much flat as a billboard. While the Klock Werks FLARE™ had a major flare at the top, and also flared down on the bottom right and left sides of the shield… It bolted right up to the stock brackets, and I had it on my bike locked down and ready to rock - in no time. With the light tint it looked “Dark & a bit Sinister”, and it was a perfect fit to the look that I was trying to achieve for my bike. So I took it out to the local drag strip and could definitely see and feel the difference right away.

From 0-80 mph - it performed really well and seemed to push the wind up and over my head, and also pushed the wind away from my body on both sides at the bottom. Which was a nice change from the OE shield which the wind

just seemed to push against. The Klock Werks FLARE™ actually seemed to stream the wind away from my head and body.

Deciding to push the envelope – I took it up to 100 mph and found that the bike really didn’t move very much… as it continued to track pretty straight, especially compared to getting blown all over the place with the stock one. I rolled the throttle back to a steady 90 mph and took my left hand off the handlebars. Once again the bike really didn’t move much at all…

I stayed at 90 with one hand on the bars for a while and the results were pretty astonishing. It really didn’t move much. Their quote that the shields re-route the air to add down-force to the front of the bike making for better stability – could actually be felt. Very cool.

I had done this same test with the stock shield previously so I knew what the results were – as at 80 mph, it got jostled about quite a bit… and felt buffeted by the wind.

Now I was tracking at an aggressive gallup and the Klock Werks FLARE™ directed the wind over my head and away from me on the sides of my body. I also found that I could ride farther without a lot of wear and tear on my body too. Boy don’t we all love that – less beatings about the body !

This is what they state on their website: Klock Werks Flare™ is the ORIGINAL windshield of its kind, and has surprised riders everywhere with not only how great it looks, but also with how well it performs. The innovative design features “hips” at the outer edge of the shield that re-route the air to add downforce to the front of the bike, improving stability vs. riding with a stock shield. The “flip” at the top of the Flare™ is designed to kick the air up and back as “clean”, less turbulent air for the rider and passenger. Made from hard-coated polycarbonate material for added durability.

So folks after my own aggressive test all I can say is “WOW” – I’m sold. Their claims rang true for this seasoned rider. In fact - I just grabbed another one for my 2007 HD Street Glide trike. You can see all the makes & models that they support at: www.getklocked.com

ZENACold weather can still mean a house full of fun with a playful kitten providing entertainment. Zena is 3 months old and ready to pounce on that toy mouse, bat that ball around the house, then climb into your lap for a snooze. She has all the potential to grow into an enchanting, well-loved pet. Benton-Franklin Humane Society has a wide selection of fine pets: cats, kittens, dogs, and currently a cute litter of Heeler mix pup-pies. MOCHASPRINGER SPANIEL5 years old

Mocha and her friend, Sunny, also a beautiful Springer Spaniel, are both exceptionally kind with loyal, loving natures. Unfortunately, their owner is very ill and hopes they can be placed in a forever home together. They are friendly, healthy, house trained buddies who love to snuggle, play and stay close to you. Put some happy in your New Year with this awesome pair. “Rescue Every Dog” relies on donations to save, support, and rehab pets in foster care, providing a safe path to a new forever home. See them all on the website and Facebook. Also R.E.D. in Poulsbo, WA.R.E.D. www.rescueeverydog.org • Seattle, WA

FENCES FOR FIDO

Got tools? In just a few short hours you can change

a dog’s life forever. How? Build a fence and unchain

“Fido” so he or she can run and play and be a part of

the family. Fences for Fido is a nonprofit that improves

the quality of life for chained up dogs. A group of hardy,

handy helpers has unchained over 1500 dogs in Oregon

and SW Washington by volunteering to build fences. No

experience necessary and it’s fun! They also provide dog

houses and other services for those in need. Make a New

Year’s resolution to join this happiness creating group,

donate, or find out how to start your own. There is also

a group in Tacoma, “South Sound Freedom Fences.”

Check websites, Facebook, and see this rewarding work

in action.

“You can’t hold people to anything they say if they’re in love, drunk, or running for office.”

“Did you hear about the new restaurant named “Karma”? There’s no menu—you get what you deserve.”

“If alcohol kills brain cells, why does it just kill the ones that contain good sense, fear, embarrassment, caution and re-straint?”

“I always look for a woman with a tattoo. I’m thinking, Here’s a gal who is capable of making a decision she’ll regret in the future.”

“Fast food destroyed more men than fast women.”

“Instant gratification isn’t soon enough.”
