“Everything is possible to the one who

has Faith.” Mark 9:23

June 2016 Page 2

I know many of us have heard “Jesus died for

you because He loves you.” But do we really

KNOW that deep in our hearts? Do we really

trust that Jesus loves us completely, wholly,

faithfully, and without end?

In my experience as a pas-

tor, I have found that many

people struggle with loneli-

ness and not feeling worthy

of love. This is often the

case because we have

been hurt in various

ways. We try to fill the

wounds in our heart with

something other than Je-

sus. So, we turn to bad habits or bad relation-

ships. We give into temptations. We listen to

the many lies of this world that tell us we won’t

be worthy enough of love until we look a certain

way, have certain things, act a certain way.

Deep down, we all just want to know and expe-

rience that we are loved. So let me speak some

truth to you.

There is no earthly thing and no earthly rela-

tionship that will fulfill you like Jesus’ love will

fulfill you and, greater yet, His love will heal

you. He wants to shower you with his Perfect

Love. He wants to satisfy all the desires and

longings of your heart. He wants YOU. He

wants to be in relationship with you. He wants

to tell you He loves you and promise you that

He will NEVER leave you or break your heart.

I want to share a few scripture verses with

you. These verses are from the Old Testa-

ment, when God was pursuing the people of

Israel. He wanted to be their only God. He

wanted to make them part of His family. Now

that we are living in the revelation of Jesus

Christ and the New Covenant (as told in the

New Testament and lived throughout Church

history) we can also look back on the Old Tes-

tament and see that the nation of Israel is a

foreshadowing and a type for the Christian

Church. So, we can take these verses and

apply them to

our personal

lives and see

how God is

STILL pursuing

the people of this

world. The word

of God living and

effective, even

now! Hosea 2:16

-21 says, “I will lead her into the desert and

speak to her heart…I will espouse you to me

forever: I will espouse you in right and in jus-

tice, in love and mercy. I will espouse you in

fidelity and you shall know the Lord.” To es-

pouse means that God wants, just like in a

marriage, to become family with us, to sweep

us off our feet with his “love and mercy”. Then

the prophet Zephaniah speaks to God’s people

to tell of God’s immense love for them: “Fear

not, O Zion, be not discouraged! The Lord, your

God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; He will

rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you

in His love, He will sing joyfully because of you,

as one sings at festivals.” Not only does God

love us, but He rejoices over us and delights

over every single one of us.

Finally, God is so in love with us that He can

become jealous. “For the Lord, your God, is a

consuming fire, a jealous God” Deuteronomy

4:24. Why would God be jealous? He is jeal-

ous of all the other things and people in our

lives that keep us from him. He sees that other

pursuits of this world have our attention when

He wants to have priority in our lives. All of

these words and promises from God’s Word

find their culmination when Jesus PROVES His

love for us by taking on our sins, suffering for

us, so that we may win heaven and be with Him

for all eternity. His love is victorious in the fact

that He conquered death (he conquered our

sin, our darkness, brokenness, etc.) and came

back to life, making it possible for us to receive

a new life, a new heart in Him.

God, Our Perfect Father, gave up His most

precious gift, His Son, so that He could be with

us. Jesus knew and loved us all when He

offered His life – He was thinking of you when

He gave His life; He was fighting for you, so

that He could be with you!

As your National Director, I enjoy working for all of you through your State Officers. The State Officers have

done an outstanding job in their leadership roles to promote Catholic Daughters and to increase the mem-

bership of Texas.

Summer is just around the corner and many courts will take leave of summer meetings to enjoy family and

friends in activities and vacation. Summer is the time to rest but always be on the lookout for new courts and

new members. At the beginning of Shirley Seyfried, National Regents term in 2014-2016, one of her goals

was for each state to institute five (5) new courts.

I am proud to say the State Officers accomplished this goal. Texas was one of the very few states who made

this goal and went above and beyond.

Membership is the life of CDA. Without members we have no courts and no courts we have no CDA. Members need to ask their friends, fami-

ly, and ladies of the parish to join CDA. I ask all court regents to plan a membership drive for new members this Fall. Award prizes for those

who bring in the most new members. This is a win-win situation for the court and CDA as a whole. If you know a priest from another parish and

there is no CDA court in it, then let him know what CDA can do for the parish and ladies. If the priest is interested, then contact Rosie Stock-

well, State Court Development Chairman/First Vice-State Regent.

The National Convention is fast approaching July 18-24, 2016, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If you have not made plans to attend, think about it

and get your paper work in to National. It will be a great learning experience with fun and visiting with CDA sisters from all parts of the country.

May God bless all of you for the time and work you give and do for others through CDA.

A shuttle service is provided for convention attendees. Shuttle Service Name: Super Shuttle Online Address: SUPERSHUTTLE.COM Phone Number: 1-800-258-3826

You will need to know which airport you arrive, which airline, flight number, date, and time for arrival and departure. It is $26.00 one way and $52.00 round trip. This picks you up outside baggage claim and drops you off at the hotel. It will pick you up at the hotel and drop you off at the airport. It will give you the time to be at the hotel door to be picked up for the ride to the airport.

There is a bus service for the same price, but you stop to let people on and off like any city bus. You will have to load and unload your lug-gage, and they stop across the street from the hotel. I believe it is the 2X bus.

You can get a cab for $40.00 - $45.00 plus tip one way.

Court Development and Membership 956-369-3048

Catholic Daughters: Pope Francis has challenged us to "Find new ways to spread the word of God to eve-ry corner of the world." CDA, through Court Development and Membership, has accomplished this by taking a giant step with the institution of a new court in Kenya in December 2015. In Texas, CDA is growing by leaps and bounds! Congratulations in the area of Court Development & Mem-bership to Mary Lynn Boyd, DD #4 and the organizer, Carolyn Bachmann, National Director and Past State Regent, for the 8th court this term in Wichita Falls at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish on April 3, 2016. This new court reached Century Club status by having over 100 members sign the charter on the day of institution. A 9th court in Edinburg is in the final stages of development and, with God's grace, will be instituted on June 30th. A 10th court in Dripping Springs has passed the preliminary part and is planning to institute in August. In addition to these new courts, several DD's and State Chairmen are working in their areas with hope that

new institutions will be forthcoming. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to them. Don't forget to let me know if you hear or see an interest for a new court (including campus courts) in your area. I will send recruitment materials which include a packet for the priest in the parish.

In Court Development and Membership, it is important not only to gain in membership but also to find ways to retain member-ship within the local courts. Be creative in ways to retain membership such as building programs around the Circle of Love program of work and especially including spiritual enhancement activities at every meeting.

Membership Extension: Refer to Tools of the Trade 2nd Ed., July 2010; Procedural Manual: Section 1, pp. 1-19; and Section 9, pp. 1-29.

Memorial Scholarship Awards 2016: This year we received $37,250.00 in contributions and were able to award forty-two (42) scholar-ships. One hundred sixty (160) appli-cations were received. I appreciate the courts who sponsored so many students. It was amazing to read some of those essays. So many students are involved in their church, school, and community. I wish the

news was filled with these stories, with these students, and all their goodness. A list of winners is included in this newsletter. If your court had a scholarship recipient, please remind your student to send me the form with the college/university information so a check can be sent in time for the Fall 2016 semester. It can be downloaded from the Texas State website. Regents and Treasurers: Some of the other officers are receiv-ing your court’s enrollment forms and checks. When that happens it may be a couple of weeks before I receive them. That takes a lot of time and wasted postage to correct. All Memorial Scholar-ship Enrollments come to me, 1243 N FM2148, Texarkana, TX 75501. Mass Cards and enrollment forms are still available. We are beginning to accumulate monies for next year. Let’s make it the best year ever! Let’s send out so many cards that the heavens are flooded with our prayers. Request your cards from me at the above phone # or email address. Please include your court name and number when ordering and how many cards to send.

Court Memorial Scholarship Contest 2016

Congratulations to the local courts who were awarded certificates for the Memorial Scholarship Enrollment Contest. The certificates and letters to Regents were sent out at the end of April. The contest has begun again. Want to participate? All local courts are eligible for this contest: criteria include the total number of dollars contributed to the Memorial Scholarship Fund between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017. Send your Mass enrollments and a court check to me. See my address above.

Greetings and blessings to all my CDA sisters. The Easter season is truly a time of renewal and rebirth for everyone. After Pentecost, don’t forget we are in the Jubilee Year of Mercy and make a pledge to help someone in need, make a pilgrimage to the “holy doors” in your area, or start a new program in your court to support one of the seven Works of Mercy.

The State Court of Texas supports charities which embody Jesus’s call to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, bury the dead, shelter the traveler, comfort the sick, and free the impris-oned. Courts from all over Texas send donations for the Texas State Projects: Texas Habitat for Humanity, Coalition for Life, Texas Disas-ter Relief Fund, and American Wheelchair Mission. Courts also send donations for the Missions of Mercy Projects: Annunciation Maternity Home; Casa Juan Diego, Cameron Colonias, and Missionaries of Charity. Donations are sent to National CDA for the five National Pro-jects: Holy Cross Family Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, The La-Bouré Society, SOAR!, and Smile Train. The ten National Charities: Apostleship of the Sea, Covenant House, Catholic Relief Services, Disaster Relief, Misericordia, National Center of Sexual Exploitation, Mother Teresa, North American College, Project Handclasp, and Tut-wiler Clinic are also supported with court donations from across Tex-as. Countless other local charities are supported by Texas CDA courts. “Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do for me” is the theme chosen by our National Regent Shirley Seyfried and complements the call for Mercy from Pope Frances. Lead your court in doing for the least of us. April was the month of Financial Reviews. Be sure a copy of your court’s review is filed with State Regent Eve Trevino, State Secretary Rebecca Brown, the National CDA office, your District Deputy, and in your court records. I will be sending out reminders to those who have not sent a copy into me through the District Deputies. Please help keep the cost of paper, postage, and time down by sending in your Financial Review on time. May is the month of National and State dues invoicing. Your local court Regent will receive the invoice. Be sure to pay all dues on time to avoid follow-up calls and emails. May is also the time for local court officer elections. To all officers, thank you for having answered God’s call to serve Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Without your leadership, CDA could not continue to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, bury the dead, shelter the traveler, com-fort the sick, and free the imprisoned.

May Christ’s peace be with you always.

Hello sweet CDA sisters, where has time gone, for some of you it has been a term of two years some have served in your positions four years. Change is good the new officers have been elected and are being installed this month of June. “Thank you” to the past officers for your dedication to CDA and “congratulations” to the newly elected officers. I am positive you will do excellent work! CDA has excellent tools to help each officer

excel in their positions, one is the “Tools of the Trade”. Another is providing detailed Officer Training Workshops which we are getting

ready to do throughout Texas.

I have included a few tips for the Treasurers to use as a guide as they begin their journey as the court Treasurer. Don’t be afraid of being a Treasurer, because you are a “Treasure” and it will work out.

I will continue to include more tips in future newsletter articles.

Keep accurate records.

There must be a motion to pay the court bills unless they are written in the Standing Rules; once approved pay them on time

and keep a copy of the invoice.

When writing checks that there must be two (2) signatures on

all court checks.

Make sure the amount written is the same as the dollar amount written. Example: Some checks have come through with the written amount of Forty six dollars and 50 cents and on the

dollar amount it was written as $40.00; please be very careful.

When writing a check write the reason on the memo line.

Bank Deposits must be made immediately and entered into your checkbook. Keep a copy of the deposit slip for your rec-

ords.

When paying State dues send the checks to the State Secre-

tary; she will send to me for deposit.

Make sure all checks are written either for National CDA or for Texas CDA and not made payable to either the State Secretary

or the State Treasurer.

Write receipts when receiving money from the Financial Secre-

tary.

Post checks and debits in the Treasurer’s Ledger.

Retention of Records

Treasurer’s Ledger and Checkbook = Permanently

Cancelled Checks and Outstanding Checks not cashed, Savings

Account books = 7 Years

Stop Payment orders and Monthly Treasurer Financial Reports = 3 Years

CIRCLE OF LOVE CONTEST WINNERS

Thank you to all the courts that turned in Circle of Love report forms

and that participated in the Education, Newsletter and Website

Contests, Memorial Scholarship and Read Across America. Thank

you as well, to all the chairmen and judges who worked so hard on

compiling and scoring entries and mailing reports to the National

Office. Congratulations to all the Circle of Love and Contest Win-

Newly Elected Court Officers: Thank you for saying “YES” to leading the greatest group of ladies in your area! You will have the awesome privilege of making CDA shine and I know you will do a great job!

Officer Training begins this month! State Officers will be at every Officer Training

Make sure your district’s officer training is the first item on the new officers’ calendars.

District Deputies - Checklists, agendas and topics should have been mailed to you by now. This train-ing will equip your local court officers with the tools and training they will need for the next two years. Please make sure the date, time and place of the Officer Training is on the new court officers’ calendars. Regents and Court Officers – Officer Training is mandatory. If one of the court officers cannot attend the training in your area, ask your District Deputy about one closest to you. Whether this is a new posi-tion or a returning officer, Officer Training will give you the tools you need to be the best Leader for your Court. We have updated our information and have great power points planned. Leadership -Being a good listener and being genuinely interested in their ideas are just two ways to get your members to come forth to help you do your job. Start today by encouraging new ideas and activities

for your court this term. You have said “YES” and you want other members to step up to say “YES” next term, so give them a good role mod-el to follow. We will always need leaders! We will always need chairmen of committees! We need you to be positive and motivating! Circle of Love Reporting Forms - A total of ninety-eight (98) courts sent in their reports. It’s amazing the different events you sponsor and the many talents your members exhibit. Congratulations to the courts who won the Circle of Love Leadership Contest! A complete list of winners is attached to this newsletter. I am sure the rest of the courts (146) could have sent in just as many amazing ideas as the ones I received. Please consider filling out the report this next year and flood my mailbox with many leadership activities. Read more about leadership styles and traits in the Tools of the Trade 2nd Edition, July 2010; Circle of Love, Leadership section.

“Officer training

is mandatory.”

Summertime’s a coming! Summertime’s a coming! Some of you will remember the lyrics to that song. And with the summer fast approaching,

many activities should be planned to include the family unit. Picnics in the park, family reunions, game and movie nights are a few to think

about. In addition to the fun activities, plan spiritual activities as well such as pilgrimages to the churches designat-

ed for indulgences during this Year of Mercy. A short vacation could include the churches that are a distance from

your home as well as including a visit to a theme park for entertainment. Explain the importance of the indulgences

to the children so they understand them and will continue this in their adult life.

Pope Francis cares deeply about the health and happiness not only of today’s families, but also of tomorrow’s fami-

lies. The pope continues to keep the theme of the family in the forefront through his speeches, homilies, addresses,

and writings. He consistently points to the importance of marriage, children, and the mutual respect and love that

nurtures healthy families and unites all in the love of God. He has written words of inspiration in his book “The

Blessing of Family: Inspiring Words from Pope Francis”. It is available from Franciscan Media which you can find

on the internet. Consider purchasing this booklet which will inspire your family to grow closer to each other and

ultimately to God.

June 2016 Page 11

Our Respect Life mission for the 2015-2017 term is two-fold: 1) Respect for all Human Life

from Conception to Natural Death, 2) Respect for all of God’s creation. Many of our courts

are very active in projects involving respect for human life, which, as we all now, is of major

importance and crucial. For this column I would like to take a closer look at the second

aspect of our mission – respect for God’s creation.

The following words are taken from Pope Francis’ Encyclical, “Laudato Si’ – On Care for

Our Common Home, 5/24/15.

“Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a

sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society. (no. 91) We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both so-cial and environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature. (no. 139)” On another occasion on 5/21/14, Pope Francis said: “We must protect creation for it is a gift which the Lord has given us, it is God’s present to us; we are the guardians of creation. When we exploit creation, we destroy that sign of God’s love. To destroy

creation is to say to God: ‘I don’t care’. And this is not good: this is sin.”

With these words in mind, I ask each court to review their Respect Life activities and, if you haven’t already done so, integrate projects in-volving respect for the earth and all God’s creatures. Read and research Pope Francis’ encyclical and explore ways to show respect for God’s creation. Promote programs at court meetings to promote the concept of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and other ways to cut down on waste and save our environment. Let us heed the words of Pope Francis and let the Texas CDA take the lead in being good stewards of

God’s creation in our communities.

“From the heart of the Trinity, from the depths of the mystery of God, the great river of mercy wells up and overflows unceasingly. It is a spring that will never run dry, no matter how many people draw from it. Every time someone is in need, he or she can approach it, because the mercy of God never ends.” – Pope Francis My sisters in Christ, there are six months left before the closing of the Holy Doors. Have you obtained an indulgence? Have you walked through a Holy Door? Have you met the usual conditions for a plenary indulgence? An “Indulgence” is a means that allows for the Church, through the power given to Her by Jesus Christ (cf. Mt 16:18-19; Mt 18:18), to reduce the effects of sins already forgiven. The church grants indulgences for certain specific prayers or pious actions, such as pilgrimages or visits to specially designated sites during a Jubilee Year. (Catechism of the Catholic Church sections 1471-1473) Our Holy Father Pope Francis has designated several acts by which the Jubilee Year Indul-gence can be obtained during this Holy Year. These acts include making a Pilgrimage to the Holy Doors at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Holy Doors of the Diocesan Cathedral, or to the pilgrimage sites designated by the Diocesan Bishop, with recitation of a Profession of Faith along with the usual conditions for gaining a ple-nary indulgence. The usual conditions are only one plenary indul-gence can be gained per day, applied either to oneself or to the faithfully departed souls in Pur-gatory; one must receive Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Reconciliation within 20 days before or after the designated act; one must not be attached to any sin, even venial sin; one must say prayers for the intention of the Holy Father (an Our Father and Hail Mary.) Indulgence can also be obtained by performing one or more of the Corporal or Spiritual Works of Mercy along with the usual conditions mentioned. The Corporal Works of Mercy done for the physi-

cal needs of others (Mt 25:31-46,) are: Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Visit the imprisoned Give alms to the poor Bury the dead

The Spiritual Works of Mercy done for the spiritu-al benefit of others are the teachings of Christ and the practice of the Church since apostolic times. They are:

Admonish the sinner Instruct the ignorant Counsel the doubtful Comfort the sorrowful Bear wrongs patiently Forgive all injuries Pray for the living and the dead

The sick and homebound may receive indul-gence by living the faith and receiving commun-ion, attending Holy Mass, or community prayer, even through the various means of communica-tions along with the usual conditions. The incarcerated, attending the chapel in the prison or directing their thoughts and prayers to God the Father as they cross the threshold of their cells along with the usual conditions, may also receive indulgence. (Misericordiae Vultus, Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, 11 April 2015, n 3). Diocese of Corpus Christi, Year of Mercy Pilgrimage Guide and Works of Mercy, Developed by the Office of Pas-toral Parish Services, 2015. I encourage you to contact your parish and/or your Diocesan office to learn of the designated Holy Door sites. Walk through the Door of Mercy and experience conversion, experience for-giveness, experience the love of God, embrace God’s mercy and be merciful to others. May the Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you on your personal journey during the remainder of The Year of Mercy.

Come Holy Spirit, strengthen us, that our thoughts and prayers may

be holy as we pray…

Pope Francis Universal Intention:

For Human Solidarity

That the aged, marginalized, and those who have no one may find – even within the huge cities of the world – opportunities

for encounter and solidarity.

For Seminarians and Novices

That seminarians and men and women entering religious life may have mentors who live the joy of the Gospel and prepare

them wisely for their mission.

For our nation, state, and local elected leaders that they will

work for the good of the people.

Pray for laws that will protect and respect our earth and human

life

For the unemployed and the uncertainty of continued employ-

ment

For the sick, the homeless, the lonely, those who have no one

to pray for them

For the graduating class of 2016 may they always stay focused on you Lord, Jesus Christ, to help them through the next chap-

ter in their lives

For Catholic Daughters who answered “yes” to taking the lead

as officers, may they rely on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Lord, hear our prayer. Amen

During the month of March you were asked to fill out many "Circle of Love" reports. In those reports was the MOMS reporting form. I thought you all might be interested in the results of these reports,

so here is a report on the reports!

Forty-three courts mailed a report to me. Thank you for this; even though your court may not participate (11 courts), you still took the time to let this chairman know. We hope that all local courts are

participating in some type of charity project.

Breakdown of financial donations:

The Colonias (Cameron Park) $1428.50

Casa Juan Diego $627.50

Annunciation Maternity Home $849.50

Sisters of Charity $427.50

Other or Local Projects $1810.00

Personal Donations $1000.00

These figures do not include courts that donated to our "Pray &

Play" weekend held in February.

A few points of interest:

One court collects and mails empty medicine containers to Tutweiler Clinic in Mississippi. This was a project men-

tioned at a workshop held at Natl. convention.

Several courts hold annual baby showers for "unwed mother"

shelters.

Another court has a parish-wide collection for school supplies and then delivers it to the after school tutorial program in

Cameron Park.

I am sure that many courts are conducting some type of charitable acts in your areas. I would love to hear about these! The bottom

line is "UNITY and CHARITY" within our great state!

It is summer already! New graduates are embarking on new and exciting chal-lenges. As they move on to the next adventure in their lives, remind them to keep their faith. If they are staying close to home, encourage them to join CDA or the KCs. If they are college bound, help them find a CDA court or KC council in the area. If there are none available, encourage them to take the lead in starting a new court. Over the summer as the courts take a break, remember the opportunities there are to work with the youth in your parish—help out with Vacation Bible School.

Volunteer to take a group to help out at the local food bank. Even though it is summer, it is not too early to begin planning for back to school. Sponsor a “back to school” ice cream social for the youth and have them bring school supplies for those in need. If you have a JCDA court in your parish, help sponsor them to the JCDA State Retreat in Wei-mar, TX on Saturday, June 25th. This is an all-day retreat where JCDA members come from all over Texas to gather and celebrate their faith and this year celebrate 90 years of JCDA! Have a blessed and safe summer! Hope to see you at the retreat!

Mission, Passion or Vision?

I remember when I decided to undertake the process of starting a

court. I worked full time and managed a family. I knew the pro-

cess was daunting, but, I also knew that if I didn’t stick my foot into

the water, I’d never know whether I would like it. Truth is when

someone makes a decision like that they go in with a bit of trepida-

tion of will it work out or will it be a failure. I believe if you have a

positive attitude you know that even if it

doesn’t work out, if it is a failure, it does

not define you as a failure. It just didn’t

happen – that’s all. But, if it does work

out – WOW what an exciting future!

It is clearly understood that all

courts start out with a small number of truly interested women. A

core of leaders with a glimpse of a vision of what the court could

be for themselves and like minded members. These women are

the bell ringers, the visionaries. They go out and announce the

news – “there’s a new organization in our parish, come and look.”

And if enough women show an interest, everyone’s confidence

levels rise and the momentum to establish a court begins the pro-

cess.

So once the court is established what is next? Well,

forward thinking, mission-minded courts take advantage of any

and every Catholic event to advertise their court and encourage

women to join. Courts with a passion go beyond getting women

to join. These courts integrate their new members into the court

by calling on them to participate in existing activities or create new

projects. As a result, members establish deep roots with the court

through activity, spiritual engagement, charitable and social inter-

action. The strongest courts have a vision. These courts devel-

op their members into leaders and chair women who are ready to

take the court into the future for many generations to come.

What I’ve mentioned above is possible for any size

court, most especially small courts. For some, the outlook may be

uncertain and perhaps difficult to envision a positive future. In

fact, it may look entirely hopeless and a bit fearful. Do not lose

hope. Gather your courage. Build the momentum. Regain your

sense of mission, reclaim your passion.

Take the first step and make the decision to come to-

gether and re-establish yourselves as a

court with a sense of mission. Find your

bell ringers, call reclusive members to

attend meetings, invite ladies into the

court and get them involved in being a

part of the Catholic Daughter mission.

When this is achieved the next step is

the only direction to go. Become a court with vision – prepare and

develop members to become the succeeding new leadership so all

Catholic women can enjoy the benefits of being a Catholic Daugh-

ter for many years to come.

Court Activity: Conduct a think tank session (open to the court,

or officers only, or committee only, which ever works best) to de-

termine where your court stands (mission, passion or vision).

Include a brain storming session to identify ways to improve your

current status or consider how to move onto the next level. Make a

plan (include using a calendar) and put your ideas into action.

Repeat often to keep the momentum going.

Spiritual Reflection:

Lord, you know the gifts we have to offer, encourage us

to place them on your altar for the benefit of all so we may continu-

ally glorify your name.

The installation of new officers is a very important ceremony with special significance to both the new-ly elected officers and the members. Officer installation is about the new officers who will lead their local court for the next two years.

Article XIII Local Court Nominations and Elections

Section 3 – Elections – Each officer shall assume the office to which she is elected with or without installation thirty (30) days following election. Section 4 – Installation – Local Court installations shall take place no later than the regular Septem-ber meeting. The responsibilities and oath of office should be stated with appropriate seriousness. The indications of specific duties are to remind the membership what each officer responsibilities will be. To begin, appoint a ceremonial coordinator who will contact the court Chaplain to set date and time of

installation of the new officers. It is always a good plan to rehearse with court officers prior to installation so that all participants are aware of their responsibilities and will present a memorable ceremony for those in attendance.

Be present early on the day of ceremony in the event there may be some last minute details.

Make sure that the Regent’s gavel is available at the Installation Ceremony. Check and make sure all officer robes are hemmed properly, cleaned and pressed. Have the table for installation ready with the statue of the Blessed Mother, candles, flowers. For more information on Ceremony for Court Room Installation of Officers, go to the Ceremonial section in the Tools of the Trade, pages 4-1 to 4-11. Sample Opening Remarks by the Installing Officer:

“Installing your newly elected officers is an integral part of our Order. It is time when leadership is passed from your current officers to a new set of officers eager to place their plans into action. It is also a time when the accomplishments of your present officers are recog-nized and thanked for a “job well done”. This ceremony is the beginning of a new year of fun and fellowship for everyone.” (From this point, go to the Installation script in the Tools of the Trade) Sample Closing Remarks by the Installing Officer: “Officers please accept my congratulations to each of you. May your term of office be one of deep satisfaction and provide you with the knowledge of a job well done. It was an honor to be your installing officer.” With everyone working together you will have a beautiful and memorable Installation of Officers.

CDA CAMPUS COURTS

Irene Quesnot 210-454-8193 [email protected]

The 4th Biennial Catholic Daughters of the Americas Campus Courts Retreat was

held on April 29 - May 1, 2016 at the Pax Retreat Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Participating were students from St. Mary’s University, San Antonio and the Uni-

versity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio. Seventeen young ladies, two advisors

and four CDA State Officers (See photo at top right: L-R, State Treasurer Terri

Beltran, First State Vice Regent Rosie Stockwell, State Regent Eve Trevino, and

State Secretary Becky Brown) attended the retreat.

The weekend began with welcoming remarks from State Regent Eve Trevino.

Irene Quesnot , Campus Court Chairman, followed with an explanation of the

weekend agenda

for prayer and

meditation. A business session included topics of the expectations for

their term as Campus Court members, how to retain and bring in new

members in order to exist. At the conclusion of the first session, Irene

took the state regent’s scripture

theme and asked the members

to reflect on what faith meant to

them as a CDA member. The

girls quickly bonded by sharing

their stories of the trials they

face as full time students with

some working one or even

three jobs to carry them through the year. The retreat was truly a safe place to open up by shar-

ing their deep thoughts and concerns by expressing themselves through their paintings (See

photo at top left). Scripture has many stories on

how God chose the youth to lead and it was evi-

dent in the paintings the girls drew that His word is

so true today.

On Saturday, they enjoyed breakfast and rolled up

their sleeves and worked on the seventh Habitat

for Humanity home build (See photo at center

right.). Work came easy for them as they quickly

teamed up with a sister to work together on the

home. .

After working hard they were treated to an after-

noon at the beach, frolicking in the water basking in

the sun and having so much fun being “GIRLS”

which is luxury they don’t have as full time stu-

dents, trying to maintain their daily struggles. (See

photo at bottom left.)

The girls expressed their thoughts that they were grateful to have the support of the Catholic

Daughters giving them the opportunity to belong to a group where they can freely share their

catholic faith working to help others in unity and charity through their friendship with the members

of the campus courts (See photo at bottom right.); as they said their farewell they promised to

keep in touch.

deserving family a Hand Up, not a handout.

With hearts of love and hands of service Catholic Daughters across Texas dedicated their time, talent and treasures beginning with the

ground breaking, to the raising of the walls, working through days of sweltering 95 degree temperatures and torrential rains, and now cele-

brate the blessing and dedication of the 7th CDA Texas State Habitat build (6th in Texas).

CDA Habitat state chairmen Minnie Dennis and Patsy Cantu went above and beyond the call of duty throughout the seven-month build as

they created opportunities for volunteers to serve, love, and laugh while building friendships and developing skills. “I can do all things

through Christ who strengthens me” takes on a new dimension when you hand a woman a hammer or a saw and provide her the means

to become the solution to the problem. She gets busy and her selfless acts of kindness built a home, hope and a community.

Bishop Mulvey said that “in this year of mercy, the efforts and sacrifices of these women have built not only a shelter from the elements,

but a home where love may dwell and where a family can know true happiness. It’s a home where God, as a welcomed guest, can protect

them from harm and be their companion when away.” He concluded by thanking the Catholic Daughters for their visible, strong, and

concrete love.

See “Giving A Hand Up Not A Handout” on Page 22.

June 2016 Page 22

“Giving A Hand Up Not A Hand Out” from Page 21.

“Our commitment to unity and charity is the cornerstone of the Catholic Daughters” said State Regent Eve Trevino. “We are committed

to improving the quality of life for deserving families; one family at a time. The first CDA Texas state build was in Corpus Christi in 2004”

followed by Wichita Falls in 2007, a Texas built and sponsored International home in Mexico in 2008, Eagle Lake in 2011, Victoria in

2012, and Columbus in 2015.

“CDA in partnership with Habitat for Humanity is a team building for a common goal. We are grateful to the National Order of the Catho-

lic Daughters for providing a $25,000.00 grant and for the generosity of Texas Catholic Daughter Courts and individuals that donated

another $25,000.00.”

The two-year theme for National Regent Shirley Seyfried “Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do for me” - Matthew 25:40,

mirrors the Habitat goal and CDA motto to embrace the principles of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and

the advancement of human rights and human dignity for all. Seyfried said, “CDA and Habitat for Humanity have helped to change the

lives of deserving families beginning in 1995 with our first build in Oklahoma City following the bombing.” The National order of the Cath-

olic Daughters has partnered with Habitat in building thirty-two (32) homes. State and Territorial Courts have built an additional twenty-

three homes.

Back in September 2015 when National Regent Seyfried helped to raise the walls of this home, she left a message of love on one of the

exterior wall studs, “May God Bless you always.” At the dedication of this home, Seyfried spoke to the members of the Texas Catholic

Daughter Courts who built this home and said, “May God Bless you always.”

Among the guest gathering for the dedication were CDA National Regent-Elect Helene Shepard, New York; First Vice National Regent

Olga Samaniego, El Paso; Second Vice National Regent Sherry Nilles, Iowa; National Secretary-Treasurer Vicky Feist, South Dakota;

National Director Carolyn Bachmann, Scotland; Past National Director and Past Texas State Regent Duchess Collins, Fulshear; First

Vice Texas State Regent Rosie Stockwell, Edinburg; State Secretary Becky Brown, Angleton; State Treasurer Terri Beltran, EL Campo;

Past State Regent Sheila Martinka, Victoria; state chairmen, district deputies, and local court members.

Special thanks were extended to HfH Construction Supervisor Mark Blankenship and HfH Care-a-Vanner Chuck Baldacchino (a nine-

year volunteer) who has donated the past five months working on Corpus Christi Habitat builds. Teens from York House, Corpus Christi’s

Halfway facility, were on hand to set-up and prepare the property for the dedication. York House teens have worked on the Soledad

Habitat Home throughout the past seven months learning life, vocational, and educational skills. Cathy and Larry Bittner, Rosenberg,

provided an old fashioned Bar-B-Q lunch.

Habitat volunteers say “We build because we believe that everyone, everywhere, should have a healthy, affordable place to call home.

More than building homes, we strengthen families through affordable homeownership, we build communities, we build hope, and we

build the opportunity for families to help themselves.”

1 Corinthians 14:26 … “Let all things be done for building up.”

Congratulations

The 8th NEW COURT of this term and the 243rd Court in Texas!

Court Queen of Peace #2710 was instituted April 3, 2016 with 103 Charter Members at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic

Church, Wichita Falls. National Director Carolyn Bachmann, Scotland, said that it was an incredible blessing to experience

another court entering the Century Club!

It was a display of the membership explosion happening right before our eyes. Mass began with about 70 Charter member

applications. Celebrant Reverend Sojan George invited the women of the parish to join and the number grew before the close

of the Mass. Women kept joining at the reception for the Institution of the court, and by the close of the ceremony, 103 wom-

en had signed the Charter!

Charter officers for the court were installed; Regent Laurine Harper, Vice Regent Dolores Bernal, Recording Secretary Car-

olyn Dreher, Financial Secretary Julie Knox, and Treasurer Fe Jovia Lee. Fr. Sojan George will serve as Court Chaplain.

Special Guests were National Director Carolyn Bachmann; State Regent Eve Trevino, Corpus Christi; First Vice State Regent

Rosie Stockwell, Edinburg; Second Vice State Regent Melodie Brunt, Texarkana; and Mary Lynn Boyd District Deputy #4.

COURT AQUINAS "EXPLORES THE MYSTERY"

Joanne Schmidt, Regent

More than three hundred people attended "Shroud Encounter" April 23rd at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Sugar Land, sponsored by Court Aquinas #2266.

International speaker Russ Breault, president and founder of The Shroud of Turin Education Pro-ject, provided a fast-paced multi-media presentation on the ancient Jewish linen cloth believed by many

to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Shroud Encounter al-lows the audience to weigh evidence in a CSI-type inquiry in rendering a verdict: is the image of the crucified man seen on the shroud that of Jesus Christ?

Thirty-five popes have found the original artifact, kept in St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Turin, Italy under climate-controlled conditions, to be a symbol that inspires apprecia-tion for the price our Lord paid for our salvation.

A life-size replica of the Shroud was on display in the Church's narthex. The event was promoted in the Texas Catholic Herald and Guadalupe Catholic Radio.

COURT OUR LADY OF THE BLUEBONNETS #2268

“PRAYERS TO OUR CDA SISTERS”

Maureen L. Spaniel,

Regent

Court Our Lady of The Bluebonnets #2268, En-nis, Texas, started mak-ing and delivering Prayer Blankets this year to CDA sisters homebound and in nursing homes . Blankets are assembled,

prayers and prayer knots tied into each blanket and then blan-kets are blessed by Court Chaplain, Father John Dick. Offic-ers and court members then visit and deliver the blankets!

COURT OUR LADY OF THE SNOW “TAKE A FRIEND TO BUNCO”

Diane Filibek, Regent

CDA Court Our Lady of the Snow #2100, Plano/Richardson, held a CDA "Take-A-Friend to Bunco" Girls Night Out at St. Joseph's in Richardson on April 1st as a fun way to increase membership. Each member personally invited a friend, coworker, grand-daughter, etc. to come to this special night out. Regent Diane Filibeck took the opportunity -- in between Bun-co play -- to speak about what it means to be a Catholic Daughter. Many members form enduring friendships and an enriched spiritual life as they work together in Unity and Chari-ty. A fun time was had by all! The Court followed up with thank-you notes to the guests along with invitations for them to attend its May Crowning of Mary at the May meeting. Fun was had by all as Regent Diane Filibeck, fellow officers and members of Court Our Lady of the Snow #2100, Plano/ Richardson -- along with their guests -- enjoyed its first "CDA Take-A-Friend to Bunco" Girls Night Out on April 1st at St. Joseph's in Richardson.
