    Sheriff warns abouttelemarketing call s

The Unicoi County Sher-iffs Department has seen anincrease in citizens receivingtelemarketing calls, and Sher-iff Kent Harris is warning thepublic to take caution whendealing with these callers.

In many cases, the citizenscould not even understandthe caller, were called late atnight and/or were called nu-merous times even after ad-vising them not to contact theperson again.

I encourage residents whodo not want to receive thesecalls from these telemarket-ers to register on the NationalDo Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1212, Harris said. Alsoyou can dial *77 or 1177 on arotary phone to reject callerswho block their caller ID fromanonymously calling yourphone.

To trace a harassing call,do the following, hang up andthen get a new dial tone. Dial*57, listen for instructionsand report the date and timeto the local providers.

Harris hopes these pre-cautionary tips will help stopharassing phone calls to citi-zens.

Harris said some of thephone calls are from Canadi-an and Jamaican area codes. He warned to not be trickedby a phone call saying that youhave won the lottery. This is ascam.

Do not respond, Harrissaid. Tell them to not callback and hang up.
