Jack Jones and Patricia McLaughlin were united in marriage on Dec. 12, 1954, in Letts. They have four children: Jackie and Mike Jones, Sandy Devore and her hus- band, Scott, all of Letts and Lee Jones of Muscatine. They have two grand- daughters: Marissa and her husband, Nick Boruff, of Illinois City, Illinois, and Allison and her husband, Zack Rife, of rural Letts. They have five great-grandchildren: Natalie, Garrett and Lauryn Boruff, and Chloe and Wes- tin Rife. ANNIVERSARY WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. David Jay Knowles Banks-Knowles Andrea Kay Banks and David Jay Knowles were united in marriage on Sat- urday, Sept. 20, 2014, at Honey Creek Resort at Lake Rathbun. The reception was followed at Albia Country Club. The bride is the daughter of Ed and Sharon Banks of Garden Grove. The groom is the son of Lynann Edkin of Illinois City, Illinois, and Larry Knowles of Wapello. The only grandparent I ever knew was born in December 1878 and died 40 years ago this month, just short of his 96th birthday. Grandpa was a gentle, God-loving man who was widowed at age 62, six years before I was born. He lived with my family during the winter months, oftentimes retreating to the basement to crack walnuts and smoke his pipe. Sitting in the rock- ing chair in his bedroom, he’d read the Bible or tune into “Amos and Andy” or Christian evangelists on his radio. The loud volume was distracting when I was doing homework and embarrass- ing when I had friends at the house. We hosted an open house for his 80th birthday in 1958. He wore a new gray suit, his black high-topped leather shoes were freshly polished, and his thinning white hair was neatly combed. He greeted scores of well-wishers, ate his share of birthday cake and basked in the attention. At age 80 I thought he was prehistoric, but he lived for almost 16 more years. More than once he lost his false teeth when he burst out laughing while watching Red Skelton or Jack Benny on our RCA console black and white TV. On Friday afternoons he rode the city bus to a senior citizens center and it was my duty to meet him at the bus stop at 6:15 on cold, dark winter evenings to make sure he got home safely. Taking my arm and walking stooped and slow, we ascended the one block hill to our house, and his enthusiastic chatter assured me he had enjoyed the day. I saw Grandpa get quite emotional on two unforget- table occasions. When he was about 85, on the advice of his doctor, my parents took the car keys away from him. He was furious! There was a major con- frontation, and after several angry words he went to his bedroom and cried. As a teenager with a new driver’s license, my heart ached for him. When he was 90 and I was 22, we were sitting alone in the kitchen on a sunny afternoon. In fail- ing health, he looked at his wrinkled, calloused hand and softly said, “I have worn this gold ring every single day for 62 years (he married in 1907) and now I want you to have it.” His voice quiv- ered slightly, revealing deep emotion. It was a touching, memorable moment that just the two of us shared. I have worn the ring for 45 years and someday I may give it to my own grandson. Yes, Grandpa was a very kind, loving, gentleman with high morals and values. I did not fully grasp the sig- nificant influence he had on me until after he died. What memories can you recall of a favorite family member who is now deceased? More importantly, what can you do now to help shape the lives of loved ones in younger generations? Mike Ruby is a longtime resident of Muscatine. Now retired, he has exten- sive experience as an educator and working in the non-profit sector. Grandpa left behind a lesson for us all What you teach today shapes tomorrow’s generation COMMENTARY Mike Ruby Bloomington Grange The Bloomington Grange held its November business meeting at the home of Sarah Anderson with 12 members attending. A potluck supper preceded the meeting. Vickie Anderson presided at the business meeting. It was noted that various members provided treats for the National Grange hospi- tality room. National Grange was held meeting Nov. 11-20 in Sandusky, Ohio. Youth chairperson Michelle Anderson reported they are planning a movie night and junior directors Bradd and Rebecca Hahn reported that the Spangler Chapel United Methodist Sunday School took over responsibility for the annual UNICEF collection and party. Members voted to spon- sor a name from the Salva- tion Army Angel Tree and Sarah Anderson agreed to purchase the gift. Bonnie Atkins will make arrange- ments for the grange to ring the Salvation Army bell. Brock Hahn, lecturer, pre- sented a short program. November birthday noted was Brock Hahn and wedding anniversary noted was Bob and Carolyn Bier- man. The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Hahn home. The potluck supper will begin and the business meet- ing at 6:45 p.m. Members are reminded that annual membership dues should be sent to Mardell McConnaha or Sarah Anderson. Muscatine Sister Cities The Muscatine Sister Cities organization met Nov. 10 at Muscatine Community College. An update was given concerning the Interna- tional Friendship Park at Eighth and Cedar streets. MPW has installed the pole for the signage, and John Fox at SignPro has produced mockups of the signs them- selves. Daffodils have also been planted. A large granite stone will be engraved with the park name. A com- memorative marker honor- ing Ralph and Lyn Jackson is being planned. The spring planting will be done by a local Boy Scout. A presentation about the delegations to Ludwigslust, Germany, and Drohobych, Ukraine, last summer took place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Art Center. There will be a Christ- mas gathering starting at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at Linda Meloy’s house. A membership packet will also be sent out in December. The dues are $25 for an individual, $35 for a family and $5 for a student. Anyone interested in join- ing should contact John Dabeet at ampal@mach- link.com. Bloomington Grange
The Bloomington Grange held its November business meeting at the home of Sarah Anderson with 12 members attending. A potluck supper preceded the meeting. Vickie Anderson presided at the business meeting.
It was noted that various members provided treats for the National Grange hospi-tality room. National Grange was held meeting Nov. 11-20 in Sandusky, Ohio.
Youth chairperson Michelle Anderson reported they are planning a movie night and junior directors Bradd and Rebecca Hahn reported that the Spangler Chapel United Methodist Sunday School took over responsibility for the annual UNICEF collection and party.
Members voted to spon-sor a name from the Salva-tion Army Angel Tree and Sarah Anderson agreed to purchase the gift. Bonnie Atkins will make arrange-ments for the grange to ring the Salvation Army bell. Brock Hahn, lecturer, pre-sented a short program.
November birthday noted was Brock Hahn and wedding anniversary noted was Bob and Carolyn Bier-man.
The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Hahn home. The potluck supper will begin and the business meet-ing at 6:45 p.m. Members are reminded that annual
membership dues should be sent to Mardell McConnaha or Sarah Anderson.
Muscatine Sister Cities
The Muscatine Sister Cities organization met Nov. 10 at Muscatine Community College.
An update was given concerning the Interna-tional Friendship Park at Eighth and Cedar streets. MPW has installed the pole for the signage, and John Fox at SignPro has produced mockups of the signs them-selves. Daffodils have also been planted. A large granite stone will be engraved with the park name. A com-memorative marker honor-ing Ralph and Lyn Jackson is being planned. The spring planting will be done by a local Boy Scout.
A presentation about the delegations to Ludwigslust, Germany, and Drohobych, Ukraine, last summer took place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Art Center.
There will be a Christ-mas gathering starting at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at Linda Meloy’s house.
A membership packet will also be sent out in December. The dues are $25 for an individual, $35 for a family and $5 for a student. Anyone interested in join-ing should contact John Dabeet at [email protected].
The next meeting will be on Jan. 12, 2015, at MCC.
