AWARDS: Council recognises heroes of Yardley

VolunteershonouredAN Oscars-style night ofawards has been held torecognise the contributionof volunteers make to thecommunity.

The bash was held to cele-brate the army of selfless work-ers who give up their time forfree in Yardley.

Council officers staged theevent and handed out gongs tothose who help children, theelderly and who carry outenvironmental work.

Deputy council leader PaulTilsley opened the ceremonyat the Westley Hotel in AcocksGreen by paying tribute totheir efforts.

Among those who were hon-oured was 62-year-old Lor-

raine Newman who hasbrought the news to blind andvisually impaired peopleacross Birmingham by help-ing to record a talking news-paper every week for the last25 years.

The city council clerk, fromYardley, said: “The talkingnewspaper helps to keep hun-

dreds of people up to datewith news that they wouldn’tget the chance to hear other-wise.”

Community stalwart BrendaCapener was also rewarded forher work with BirminghamCity Council’s Cleaner,Greener, Safer board and Yard-ley Neighbourhood Forum.
