STEAMBOAT WILLIE

The movie industry is such a young field and is changing every day. New developments are being made constantly, as with the upcoming short film by Disney Studios, Steam Boat Willie. The film is to be shown before the upcoming feature film Gang War and be featured alongside it, but Steamboat Willie looks like it will be the real reason for going to the movies this November. The fea-ture will break new ground in the film world, especially for anima-tion, and promises to be a wonderful way to entertain your entire family and help you forget all your troubles.

I took a trip to Disney Studios to learn more about their project from Mr. Walt Disney himself, and what I saw looked promising. The character of steamboat Willie and his female counterpart look adorable and friendly, perfect for children, and the short bit of the film Mr. Disney showed me seemed to be outrageously funny, showing the mischievous Willie playing a goat as a phonograph to play “Turkey in the Straw.” It was enough to reduce me to a fit of laughter and forget that there could ever be anything bad happenlaughter and forget that there could ever be anything bad happen-ing in the world. If the rest of the short turns out like this, it will be an ideal family feature.

This film is not only entertaining, but it will also be making his-tory as the world’s first animated feature to have its music, dia-logue, and sound effects created completely post-production. Mr. Disney boasted how he did the voices for this feature himself, and of the hard work and generosity of his associate Pat Powers, whose Cinephone system was used to make the film. Seeing this film as it comes together reflects on how America is at the center of the blossoming film industry, and all of the greatest films being made are being made right here. Movies like Steamboat Willie are driv-ing this young industry forward, and pushing the entertainment industry into the future.
