Christmas Concert 2014Christmas Concert 2014Christmas Concert 2014Christmas Concert 2014
Monastery NS Annual Christmas Concert took place on December
10th & 11th and signals the official start of Christmas in Ardee! The
School Choir opened the concert under the able direction of Mrs
Browne and Annamarie Brennan. They also appear at the Peace Proms
at the RDS on Sunday, February 1st 2015 and tickets can be booked
at www.cboi.ie Mrs McGrory’s and Mrs Murphy’s Junior Infants gave
us some great festive songs and were followed by Mrs Browne’s Sen-
ior Infants who performed The Christmas Alphabet. Ms Higgins’ 1st
class gave us a beautiful performance of The Christmas Story. Third
class performed a Joyous Noelle where there seemed to be “no letter
L”! Mr Murphy’s second class showed us Christmas All Year Round and
finished with a great Michael Jackson number. Master Woods’ tin
whistle group opened the 2nd act with a traditional Irish medley and
were followed by Master McCoy’s 4th class who performed a Snowman
Medley through every genre of music! Fifth class had us laughing with
Fun and Laughter and some great and unusual ceilí dancing. Sixth class
gave us Just Another Day in 6th and a great finale with Dirty Dancing!
Parents’ Association
Our Parents’ Association
held their AGM on Novem-
ber 19th. New officers
elected were Joan McCarthy
(Chairperson), Brenda Roe
(Secretary) and Mariea Gil-
bert (Treasurer). A church
gate collection also took
place in November. A special
word of thanks to all the
parents who attended the
collections. Parents also sold
raffle tickets and ran the
sweet shop during our
Christmas Concerts. All
funds collected are used to
support our boys in school.
The PA will also host a table
quiz early in the New Year.
Swimming Lessons
Fifth and sixth classes have
completed swimming lessons.
Third and fourth classes
commence swimming lessons
on Thursday January 8th,
2015. The cost of swimming
lessons is subsidised by our
Parents’ Association.
Non-Uniform Day
The last day of school this
week is a non-uniform day
in aid of the homeless. The
charge is €2 per pupil and
this will be matched by our
Parents’ Association.
Each year at Christmas, Monastery National School holds a raffle to raise
funds for charities. We ask the boys in Junior Infants to bring in one or
two non-perishable items to make up hampers, which are then raffled,
along with other prizes. We feel this is a very worthwhile learning exercise
for the boys. This year our charities are CONCERN and Fr. Oliver
McCrossan’s projects in the Philippines for children with special needs. Fr.
McCrossan visited 5th and 6th classes recently and spoke about the
devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013. More than 6000
people lost their lives and thousands of homes were destroyed. And in the
last couple of weeks the Philippines has been hit by yet another typhoon.
Irish charity CONCERN is appealing for support this Christmas for the children of South Sudan.
Conflict is continuing to force families from their homes and away from their harvests. 50,000
children are desperately in need of a Concern ration card and the life-saving food it will provide – or
they will be at risk of severe malnutrition by Christmas. This monster raffle took place at Christmas
Assembly and thank you to all who supported us.

A Trip Down Memory Lane - Cinnlinte 3 - Christmas 1977 WELL DONE BOYS - We must confess that when towels and soap were installed in the toilets after
the summer holidays there was a feeling that they might not be appreciated properly by all but to our
delight and to the credit of all our boys from the youngest to the oldest the operation has been
immensely successful. Liam Hennessy December 22nd, 1977.
Master McGee contacted Santa Claus in the North Pole and asked that he
come to visit the school. He was very busy working with his elves but he still
managed to visit Junior and Senior Infants on Wednesday the 17th of
December in the Gym. He arrived at 1.10pm and was welcomed by Master
McGee, infants and parents. He spoke to every boy and gave them a present!
