Crash victim medivacced to RDH Annual Xmas markets to be held at Ryan Park THE Katherine Community Markets will be holding a Christ- mas market on Saturday, December 14, and or- ganisers are inviting anyone who wishes to have a stall - from trash and treasure to home- made items - to sell their items on the day. “The markets gener- ally have a Christmas market where we relax the rules on items for sale - and this year the committee has opened it up to include trash and treasure, allowing peo- ple the opportunity to get together to raise some extra cash for Christmas,” market committee chair Alison Jacks said. “It’s a great opportu- nity for people of Katherine to get in last minute Christmas shop- ping. “We also welcome community groups who wish to fundraise or de- livery community mes- sages.” The Christmas mar- ket will be held at Ryan Park from 8am to 12pm on December 14, stall holders can set up from 6.30am. Community rallies for typhoon Haiyan victims WHEN typhoon Haiyan roared across the Philippines earlier this month the super storm left a trail of devastation. Thousands of people lost their lives, and the nation is still trying to come to terms with the disaster. Katherine business owner Fe Fahey, who moved to Katherine from her home in the Philip- pines 33 years ago, said while her extended family in the Philippines was lucky to be alive, they lost everything in the typhoon. “The typhoon destroyed everything in its path,” Ms Fahey said. “My family back home lost their homes and their possessions - everything.” The Katherine community is now rallying to help typhoon victims in the Philippines. This Saturday Ms Fahey’s daughter Cindy is hosting a Fil- ipino banquet from 6pm at the Mabuhay Hall on Giles Street. Katherine country singer Katie Oliver will headline the night, while song-writer Serena Pech and Jehrome Reyes will also play their parts. There will be Christmas hampers, silent auctions and face painting for children. Presale tickets for $25 can be purchased at Fe’s Variety and the Katherine Times office. All proceeds from the event will be going towards the Ty- phoon Haiyan appeal. “Many families will make traditional ‘Lechon’, which is a Filipino pork dish,” co-organiser Lyn Ainslie said. “Katherine’s Filipino com- munity will do whatever they can to support the thousands of Filipinos who are currently dis- placed due to Typhoon Haiyan.” Escarpment Restaurant owner Phil Jazyschyn is also supporting the local typhoon appeal with a fundraiser dinner. On Wednesday, December 4, the Escarpment Restaurant will run a $50 set menu with $10 going towards the appeal. For every drink purchased, Mr Jazyschyn will also donate $1 to local fundraising efforts. Bookings can be made di- rectly with the Escarpment Restaurant on 8971 1600. “With the support of the community, we hope Katherine will raise much needed funds for the recovery appeal,” Mr Jazyschyn said. On the weekend Member for Katherine, Willem Westra van Holthe, has presented Fe Fahey with a $2,000 cheque in support of the fundraising efforts. LAST Wednesday a 58-year-old woman had to be medivacced to Darwin after being involved in a tragic rollover near the Buntine Highway, west of Katherine on Tuesday night. The woman, from Kununurra, and a female passenger rolled the 4WD they were travelling after a tyre blowout. The women managed to escape the wreckage of their vehicle after smashing the windscreen. The 58-year-old was stabilised at Katherine Hospital before aeromedical charity CareFlight flew her to Darwin to receive specialist treatment for head in- juries sustained in the crash. > By PAUL BIDMEADE
