hat was the case when Wayne Sawyer saw photographs of the Healthy Communities Neighborhood in East Ocean View. As the President of

Bennett’s Creek Nursery in Suffolk, Wayne understands the importance of plants and greenery in making a more vibrant commu-nity. “Some of those streets could use some greening up,” he suggested and donated 1,000 bushes to get the job done. He was one person who decided to step up and, in so doing, planted a seed of community spirit that took root and spread across the area. “It seemed that as soon as the bushes were donated, other people and organi-zations wanted to pitch in,” said Executive Director Steve Zollos, Bon Secours Healthy Communities. “It was just what this com-munity needed to get it on track. People could rally around this project and see an immediate impact.” Organizations stepped up to the shov-el and dug in to do the planting, which included azalea, juniper, spirea, barberry, and holly bushes. “It was fantastic to see so many people helping with this project. It

brought a real unity to our neighborhood right from the start,” according to the East Ocean View Civic League President, Bill Eason. Organizations teamed up with the Civic League to get the job done including: the Boys Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, the military, DAMCO Freight Forwarding, Senior Living Guide, The Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners of Norfolk, New Life Christian Center, Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, Mary Immaculate Hospital, and Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center.

Soon the bushes were planted, the neighborhood looked healthier, and community spirit was soaring. Residents stepped up to support the beautification project as well. When neighbors noticed some of the new bushes were floundering at one local church, they offered to water them.

“The church does so much for our community, I’ll be glad to water the bushes for them if they need the help,” said one local resident. In addition to help from the residents, the Master Gardeners came to care for them as

well. Now, thanks to the community spirit, they are all thriving in their new green environment. “It all began with one person’s gen-erous act,” Steve Zollos said. “One

person had something to give and did what he could. As a result others stepped up, and before we knew it, an entire community was a little bit healthier.”

Anyone can help oth-ers – even you. That’s right, you have what it takes to help build a healthy com-munity and you don’t have to change, go to a seminar, receive training, or get a degree. You just need to step up and do what you can. Folks from all walks of life share a desire to help.Just look at all the folks

who are helping already. You can see them in some photos on this page of SeniorHealth Magazine. They are seniors, children, boy scouts, girl scouts, pastors, nurses, business

groups, military people and civil-ians. Some are gardening, planting bushes, and showing people how to garden. Some are mentoring children, distributing school supplies, coaching

sports teams and teaching children how to fish. Others are taking blood pressure readings, distributing food to the hungry and raising money. Several are helping with paperwork and answering phones. What do they all have in common? A willingness to make this world a better place.

You can make a difference too.How can you help? Well, how about forming a bowling team to benefit two local causes? Senior Health is organizing a “just for the fun of it bowling tournament” fundraiser. The money will be used to expand the East Ocean View food pantry and to upgrade the Community Center’s computer room so area children and teens will have a place to do their homework and learn about today’s technological advances. These projects will certainly improve the health and wellbeing of our community.

Rally at the AlleyMatch yourself against other seniors and come out in full force to help make Hampton Roads a healthier place to live. Organizing a bowling team only costs $20 per person and includes shoes and bowling ball rentals, two lanes of bowling, door prizes and most importantly, a chance to help others who are in need.

Don’t have a team? Then jump in as an individual and we will put you on a team. You’ll meet new people, make new friends and have more than a few laughs. It doesn’t even matter if you’re a new bowler…we have bumper lanes available for the inexperienced. There is no age limit so bring your children and grandchildren. They will learn the importance of helping others while building a memory. Call 217-0330 today to register and help us build a healthier community. It only takes one person to step up to make good things happen.

Our Senior Health team is excited about the upcoming 2010 Successful Aging Forum. Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the new daily syndicated talk show, The Dr. Oz Show, will be our keynote speaker. As with our past speakers, who have included Pat Boone, Naomi Judd, Anne Jillian and Jack LaLanne, you will enjoy meet-ing this prominent heart surgeon and best selling author.

Dr. Oz is a local hero.As you may know, Dr. Oz is co-clinical director for the Bon Secours Heart and Vascular Institute. The last time he was in Hampton Roads, he witnessed a car accident while on his way to Maryview Medical Center for a meeting. He immediately stopped his car and provided medical assistance to the people involved in the accident. When a passenger recognized Dr. Oz, he called his mother on his cell phone to tell her that her favorite television doctor was helping his friend who suffered minor injuries. The fact that Dr. Oz did not even hesitate to stop and lend a hand speaks volumes to his character. We think this qualifies Dr. Oz as a local hero, don’t you?

Register now for the Successful Aging Forum.Your opportunity to hear, meet, and learn from Dr. Oz is just around the corner! Along with our panel of local medical experts, this nationally-recognized physician will be on hand to answer your health and wellness questions at the upcoming Successful Aging Forum on May 14, 2010. Seating is limited so register now. If your payment is received before December 31, 2009, you will receive a $2 discount. See the ad below for details. We hope to see you at the forum.

Each September, seniors throughout Hampton Roads gather for SeniorFest, a health festival presented by Senior Health, to learn how to lead a healthier life through regular exercise, proper nutrition, improving memory and social activity. As in years past, SeniorFest 2009 was a spectacular and inspiring event featuring free health screenings, healthy food, entertainment, exhibits and the much-anticipated senior talent shows.

Hampton Roads celebrates SeniorFest 2009. SeniorFest 2009 was celebrated at three locations: Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center on the Southside, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Western Hampton Roads and Mary Immaculate Hospital on the Peninsula. The facilities, elegantly decorated Hollywood style for the occasion, honored over 450 seniors with a luncheon. Silver gleamed against a backdrop of black and white, providing the perfect setting for the superb food and talent show.

Seniors take center stage. Excitement grew as competitors assembled for the “Seniors Got Talent Show.” Soon the contestants had everybody

sitting on the edge of their seats, clapping hands and tapping feet to the various sounds filling the halls. With so many excellent performances, choosing a winner was not easy. The winners of the talent show each receive a $100.00 Visa Gift Card and the chance to compete for the grand prize at the 2010 Successful Aging Forum in May. We express our gratitude to all who attended and supported the “Seniors Got Talent Show.”

Seniors benefit from free health screenings and product information. The SeniorFest Health Fairs were also extremely successful with over 300 seniors participating. Bon Secours supplied free health screenings and healthy snacks. Walgreens provided flu shots. Exhibitors displayed useful informa-tion and products, and also supplied fantastic door prizes. The grand prize was a GPS system. A special thank you is extended to the major sponsor of the 2009 SeniorFest events: Humana Marketpoint. Special congratulations go out to our winning exhibitors, Carrington Place, Visiting Angels, and Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia for being voted Best in Show for their most inspired and interactive booths.

Every senior citizen is someone’s hero. Marion E. Croall is a hero to organizations that provide sup-port for the needy in the Hampton Roads community. At our Successful Aging Forum held in April, national singing star Pat Boone presented her with the Senior Hero of Virginia Award for 2009 in recognition of her 50 years of dedication and commitment to others. Mrs. Croall, 86 years old, received a trophy and a cruise for two to the Eastern Caribbean. Her friend Sister David Ann Niski says Mrs. Croall’s lifelong endeavor has been supporting charities, people

in need and many other good causes. In nominating Mrs. Croall for the award, Sister David Ann said, “As a greeter and shoppers’ help-er at a Newport News Wal-Mart, Mrs. Croall discov-ered that the mer-chandising giant

recycled and discarded many items it could no longer sell to the public. The company

returned the items to warehouses for disposal. Mrs. Croall asked the store manager if Wal-Mart would donate the products to our local city, civic and religious charities and programs for the very needy people

in the area. The answer was yes, and Mrs. Croall became a local hero to the community.”

Who is your senior hero? Once again, Bon Secours Senior Health will be honoring senior adults in Hampton Roads who help make a difference. We are looking for that special “Senior Hero in the Midst of Us” to recognize as our 2010 Senior Hero. Tell us about the senior citizen who has made a difference in your life or the lives of others and nominate that person for the prestigious 2010 Senior Hero of Virginia Award. The winner will receive a trophy, recog-nition in Senior Health Magazine, and a one-week cruise for two, donated by Cruise Planners Plus.

Nominees must be at least 65 years old and currently reside in Hampton Roads.

• What to submit: 1. The person’s name, address, birth date and phone number. 2. A one page written nomination stating why you believe he

or she should receive the award (Nominations longer than one page will not be considered).

3. Your name and phone number.

• Where to submit: Successful Aging Forum Awards Bon Secours Senior Health 3636 High Street Portsmouth, VA 23707 Attn: Joanne Merinar

• When to submit: Today! Do not miss the deadline. All entries must be received by Thursday, April 1, 2010.

The Senior Hero of Virginia Award and the Senior Organization of Virginia Award will be presented at the 2010 Successful Aging Forum, and all nominees will be recognized at this event. Past winners include Marion Croall, Ruby Walden, Eleanor Cannon, Frances Sledge, Ercell Jackson, Leroy Ober, and Marilyn Fall.
