As the liturgical calendar turns in February towards the Lenten season, many Christians of different denominations will begin to think about spiritual disciplines to enhance growth and reflection. Our Presiding Bishop, The Most Reverend Michael Curry, is offering an excellent spiritual exercise that we can all benefit from. It’s called the ‘Bible Challenge’. Working with Forward Movement Publications, Bishop Curry is challenging all Episcopalians to commit themselves during the seasons of Lent and Easter, to read the Gospel of Luke, followed by the Acts of the Apostles. If you look at the way the New Testament is organized, you will see that the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John come first and are grouped together. Then comes the Acts of the Apostles, which is a history of the early Church in the days following Jesus’ resurrection. But the truth is, most scholars have told us that Luke and Acts, are parts one and two of the same story, written by the same author, the beloved physician St. Luke. They were originally written on the same scroll, and were meant to be read one after the other. This is an important part of the Bible challenge. Also, Forward Movement publications has put together two small books to serve as reading and reflection aids for the Bible Challenge. The books are called ‘A Journey with Luke’, and ‘A Journey Through Acts.’ Both books are edited by Marek P. Zabriskie. They contain daily readings from the two books, followed by a reflection from someone in the Episcopal Church. I believe they will be important helps for us in being able to finish this challenge. They can be ordered directly from Forward Movement Publications, or from Amazon.Com. (They are available there for those using Kindle). If you wish to order them from the Church, just let me know, and I will order them for you. The books are about 10 dollars each. Bishop Curry has said that the Bible Challenge will begin on the Sunday before Lent, which this year is February 11th, and it will go until Pentecost Sunday, which is May 20th. It’s about 100 days of reading. It’s a time to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest these important pieces of Holy Scripture. I can think of no better spiritual discipline this time of year than the reading of the Bible itself, and then reflection on that reading. I plan to take up this challenge in my own life this year, and I invite you to join me. Together, may we all benefit from the prayerful reading of God’s written word. Faithfully, Father Ron

As we enter Lent leading to Easter, we look within and see that He is here; He is waiting for us
to look and see Him. Then He breaks out of death into new life! In all of His strength and
presence, He is with us.
EXPECTING GOD IN CHRIST TO COME
Before Pentecost the disciples knew Jesus as the One Who gave them power to conquer demons
and to bring about a revival (Luke 10:18-20). It was a wonderful intimacy, but there was a
much closer intimacy to come -- "I have called you friends." Friendship is rare on earth. It
means identity in thought and heart and spirit. The whole discipline of life is to enable us to
enter into this closest relationship with Jesus Christ. We receive His blessings and know His
word; we were created to know Him.
It is a joy to Jesus when a disciple takes time to step more intimately with Him. Fruit bearing is
always mentioned as the manifestation of an intimate union with Jesus Christ (John 15:1-
4). When once we get intimate with Jesus we are never lonely. The saint who is intimate with
Jesus will never leave impressions of himself or herself, but only the impression that Jesus is
having unhindered way in him or her. The only impression left by such a life is that of the
strong calm sanity that our Lord gives to those who are intimate with Him.
We do not need to look for God to come to us or to our situation in any particular way, BUT
LOOK FOR HIM ALWAYS! That is the way to make room for Him. Expect Him to come, but
do not expect Him only in a certain way. However much we may know God, the great lesson to
learn is that at any minute He may break in. We are apt to overlook this element of surprise,
then all of a sudden God meets us in our life and in our situation!
We are called to keep our life so constant in its contact with God that His surprising power may
break out on the right hand and on the left. Always be in a state of expectancy; you will be
making room for God to come in!

1 Peter 4:8: “Above all, love
each other deeply, because love
covers over a multitude of sins."
Those of you who have been married a long time
understand this verse from 1 Peter. You who
have reared children, particularly several
children, can resonate with this verse. Actually,
anyone who is in relationship with others can connect to the verse, because it
concerns the key to success in any human relationship. Perhaps you did not
even know that the familiar adage: "love covers a multitude of sins" comes right
out of the New Testament. But you have heard it said before. Part of being a
successful participant in marriage, parenting, and in any relationship situation is
the ability to grow in love for those who you are bonded with to the point that
whatever imperfections come into your path from them, your love for them
"covers over" a multitude of challenges.
This verse from 1 Peter came to my mind while I was folding a huge load of
laundry, and doing the "matching socks" thing. I got rather impatient. Oh my
goodness, such a labor of love! In our family the sock brigade mainly consists of
golf socks and gym socks. And they are guaranteed to be wrong-side-out when
they come out ready to be paired with their mates. Furthermore, there are always
strays in our laundry sockage and I think that is what baffles me the most! But
alas, I think about the precious feet that have been in those socks, and I keep on
turning them back right side out, and finding mates for them.
Have you ever thought about why Jesus overlooked all the imperfections of his
followers, even his closest disciples? When Jesus saw the everyday behaviors,
the mundane day-to-day imperfections that were present in the people he had
come to teach about a better way of life, I wonder how he found his patience?
My goodness, think of how he overlooked so many imperfections! Truly, Jesus'
heart was completely full of love. He took great joy in showing love for the every
5
day person. Jesus loved humanity deeply, and was willing to go all the way to
his tortuous death by crucifixion simply because of that love. And the love of
Jesus poured out for the world from the arms of the cross indeed took care of "a
multitude of sins". He saved the world for all time.
This month, Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday. Rather, I should say, this
year's Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine's Day. Maybe this is a sign, an
interesting and good everyday kind of thing. The secular world's recognition day
for love falls into our church calendar on the very day that we recommit ourselves
to follow our Lord of Love more nearly and dearly, all the way to the cross. It is
the day that we get ashes marked upon our foreheads, reminding us that we are
dust and to dust we shall return. This life is fragile and we humans are not the
authors of it. Our Creator, Almighty God has made us for a higher purpose, and
sent Jesus to teach us that purpose. Love in all its holy and beautiful forms is a
huge thing we give thanks for, as we kneel penitently at our altar rail to receive
our ashes. With all our hearts we pray that the multitude of sins we have
generated into this life, even unknowingly, our loving God will forgive. God does
forgive us of our sins, because we are loved beyond measure. We pray that as
God covers us with grace, we can then assist God in bringing grace to the world
in the name of Jesus.
May we continue to live as people who love very deeply, leaving room for
forgiveness, tolerance, and acceptance of the differences that others bring our
way, always kneeling in thanksgiving to our Maker.
In faith and love,
Mother Beth+

“Just As I Am” was written by Charlotte Elliott of Brighton, England. An invalid most of her life, Charlotte was constantly frustrated by her seeming “uselessness”. Her life was a testimony to patient endurance through physical, mental, and emotional suffering. She was a gifted poet and wrote humorous verse in her youth. Though often depressed by her condition, Charlotte always felt renewed by the assurance of salvation and responded by writing hymns with her “strong imagination and a well cultured and intellectual mind”. (Julian, A Dictionary of Hymnology, 1892).
Charlotte’s brother (a clergyman) designed a school to give daughters of clergymen a “high education at nominal cost”. As the plans for the school materialized, everyone around Charlotte worked and prepared to raise funds. A bazaar was planned, but Charlotte had to just lie on her ‘invalid couch’ and watch the preparations. After a sleepless night, Charlotte decided she must use her faith to conquer her emotions. She penned the words to “Just as I Am” as a formula of her faith and published it within a matter of years in The Invalid’s Hymn Book. The rest is, as they say, “history”. This hymn has been used by Rev Billy Graham, Dwight Moody, and many other evangelists. It continues to inspire many Christians to let God use them “just as they are”. As we approach another holy Lenten season, keep in mind the words of this hymn:

Just as I am
Just as I am – without one plea, But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee, – O Lamb of God, I come!
Just as I am – and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot, – O Lamb of God, I come!
Just as I am – though toss’d about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings and fears within, without,
– O Lamb of God, I come!
Just as I am – poor, wretched, blind; Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find, – O Lamb of God, I come!
Just as I am – Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe, – O Lamb of God, I come!
Just as I am – Thy love unknown Has broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone, – O Lamb of God, I come!
Just as I am – of that free love
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above, – O Lamb of God, I come!

Church Is a Team Sport by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson
Most sports teams have a star player.
Get the ball to him and he’ll score.
Get him up at bat with two men on
base and he’ll hit them home. The
sports commentators keep extensive
statistics on each player that they’ll pull out during a lull in the play. It’s all about the
numbers — each person playing to advance his own career, to increase his averages – at
least that’s the way it seems sometimes.
But once in a while you see a team that plays together with a kind of magic. It’s not about
one person scoring big, but it’s every team member doing his utmost to move the team
forward to win the game – to get the ball across the line, to score.
Each player on the field or in the court has a role to play. And when each plays that role
well and aggressively — keeping his eye on the ball – the whole team benefits. When one
player just goes through the motions, the team is crippled. And if a
key member of the team is injured – or just doesn’t show up for the
game – the whole team suffers. The team fails to score.
A healthy church has a lot in common with a finely oiled sports
team. Church shouldn’t be just a spectator sport with a few players
entertaining the crowd. Church – especially our church – relies on
each person actively doing what he or she does best. Church is a
team sport.
What’s your role in our congregation? What are you doing to move the ball forward? Are
you getting enough practice in? Can you coach for a Sunday or other day, if needed?
Dear friends, it’s time to suit up together! Game on!

What’s Happening at St. Peter’s This Month:
For Adults on Sunday Mornings at 9:30 a.m.,
What Every Christian Needs to Know About the Jewishness
of Jesus (Continuing through March 25th) If you were to ask ten people,
Who started Christianity? you might hear ten voices giving the same quick
response: Jesus. But those ten people would be wrong. Jesus wasn’t a
Christian. Jesus lived and died as a Jew. Understanding the Jewishness of
Jesus is the secret to knowing him better and understanding his message.
Walking through Jesus’ life from birth to death, Rabbi Evan Moffic serves
as a tour guide to give Christians a new way to look at familiar teachings and practices that are rooted
in the Jewish faith and can illuminate our lives today. Moffic gives fresh insight on how Jesus’
contemporaries understood him, explores how Jesus’ Jewishness shaped him and more. In
encountering his Jewish heritage, you will see Jesus differently, gain a better understanding of his
message, and enrich your own faith.

ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION
This year the Mission-Outreach Executive Committee has chosen Five Talents International as the
recipient of the Ash Wednesday collection. There will be envelopes passed out with your
bulletins on that day.
THE ORIGINS OF FIVE TALENTS
Five Talents USA is a faith-based international development organization with the mission to
fight poverty, create jobs and transform lives by empowering the poor in developing countries
using savings and microcredit programs, business training and spiritual development.
Five Talents was started at a global meeting of Anglican Church leaders in response to their deep
concern for the poor internationally. The founders wanted to guard the dignity of the poor and
assist them by creating jobs and opportunities to rise out of poverty, so in 1998 Five Talents was
founded.
Today, Five Talents serves communities in some of the most risky, remote, rural areas in the
world – places not served by commercial microcredit agencies. It is headquartered in Fairfax,
Virginia, outside Washington, D.C., and has a sister organization, Five Talents UK, based outside
London, England.
St. Peter by-the-Lake has supported the work of Five Talents since 2006 and spearheaded an
initiative in the Anglican Diocese of Thika, Kenya in partnership with The Rotary Foundation of
Rotary International. That microfinance initiative, known as the Thika Community Development
Trust now serves over 6100 members and is a model program referenced throughout East Africa.
A monthly highlight of organizations we support with our Time, Talent and Treasure.
FOCUS ON MISSION - OUTREACH TEAM And do not neglect doing good and sharing; for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16
