Mira Mesa PageantsBy: Aleksandra Wojtalewicz RichardsPhotos by: Albertine Feurer-Young, theArt of Albertine (ArtOfAlbertine.com)

With their smiles sparkling as brightly asthe crowns, two Mira Mesa residentswere crowned the community’s royaltyearlier this month.

This year’s Miss Mira Mesa title went to22-year-old Keshia Llarenas, and 15-year-old Madison Dodd was crownedMiss Teen Mira Mesa.

The second annual Miss Mira Mesa andMiss Teen Mira Mesa Pageants tookplace on February 2 at the Country Innand Suites. The entire event was “aclass act,” said Ted Brengel, pageantjudge and president of the Mira MesaTown Council.

For the next year, Llarenas and Doddwill represent the Mira Mesacommunity at numerous public eventsin Mira Mesa and the greater San Diegoarea. “There is a lot they will be doingthrough the year,” said Steve Rivette, pageant judge, vice president of theMira Mesa Theater Guild, and MiraMesa business owner. And he expectsthem to fulfill their obligations “with asmile on their faces and an upliftingattitude no matter what comes theirway.”

The pageants, sponsored by the MiraMesa Town Council, consist of fivecomponents: opening number, bathingsuit (Miss Mira Mesa only)/athletic wear(Miss Teen Mira Mesa only)competition, evening gowncompetition, speech, and a 20-minuteinterview with each of the judges.

“The competition was a greatopportunity to meet new people,” saidDodd. “My favorite part was theinterview” because it was anopportunity “to show the judges mypersonality.”

When it comes to judging thecompetition, majority of the judgesagree that “it is about so much morethan a pretty exterior,” said Rivette. “Itis about the total individual, [and]honesty, integrity, kindness, and awillingness to do for others.”

The contestants need to have“confidence and a secureunderstanding” of the role that needs tobe fulfilled as a crown holder, saidJennifer Lewis, pageant judge anddirector of talent at John Robert PowersSan Diego. “The girls need tounderstand what it means to be a rolemodel and reach out to the community, and how to set an example.”

The judges consisted of five communitymembers: Brengel, as the currentpresident of the Mira Mesa TownCouncil; Cynthia Collins, owner ofCollins Family Jewelers (sponsors of thecrown for the event); Lewis; Rivette;and Marlon Austria, long-time MiraMesa resident.

Maria Pankau, the pageant coordinator,“has done a fabulous job of gettingjudges,” said Brengel. “The right peoplewere doing the judging.”

The new pageant queens grew up andcurrently live in Mira Mesa. “I love MiraMesa. I consider this place my home,”said Llarenas.

Although she still has two years until herhigh school graduation, Dodd alreadyhas post-graduation plans. She hopes toattend the Fashion Institute of Designand Merchandising and eventually moveto New York City to pursue a career infashion as a merchandise buyer.

Dodd looks forward to her new role asa representative of Mira Mesa. “Mygoals are to fully embrace my reign andmake the most of all the opportunitiesgiven, and to have a positive impact inMira Mesa,” said Dodd.

Which given Dodd’s “always happy andpositive” attitude, should not be difficultfor her to accomplish, said Llarenas.

Throughout their reign, both queenswill work together to be goodrepresentatives of Mira Mesa. “We’re ateam,” said Llarenas.

They also hope to showcase all thatMira Mesa has to offer, especially thecommunity’s diversity and variousevents, such as the Fourth of Julyparade, street fair, and farmer’s market, which happen to be their favoriteaspects of Mira Mesa.

Aside from being crowned Miss/MissTeen Mira Mesa, each winner receives asash, membership in the Mira MesaTown Council, a gift basket filled withgift cards for services and restaurants inthe community (valued atapproximately $500), and a scholarship

($350 for Miss Mira Mesa, $200 forMiss Teen Mira Mesa). The Mira MesaTown Council will also sponsor eachwinner to compete in the Miss GreaterSan Diego/Miss Teen Greater SanDiego pageants.

Three girls competed for Miss MiraMesa, and only one, Dodd, competedfor Miss Teen Mira Mesa. Pankau is notsurprised at the low turnout—“it is new.”However, she remains hopeful—“we aretrying to get the word out to more girls.”

According to Pankau, the pageant is nota beauty pageant, but more of a“community service pageant” whereyou get to interview “for the job of anambassador for Mira Mesa for the nextyear.”

Rivette agrees. “This contest can helpyoung women of today be moremature, responsible, [and] caringpeople,” he said.

The Miss Mira Mesa pageant is open tofemales ages 18 to 26 who havegraduated from a Mira Mesa highschool and/or lived or worked in MiraMesa for the past year. The Miss TeenMira Mesa pageant is open to femalesages 13 to 17 who are current studentsof a Mira Mesa middle school or highschool. “I would love to watch thispageant grow,” said Lewis. “This is greatfor anyone in the area, and really is anamazing tradition to have in the MiraMesa community.”

Wangenheim Middle School’s first Family Science Night held Thursday, Jan. 31,2013 drew a large crowd of parents and students of all ages for an evening offamily fun involving all kinds of science.

“I see stripes!” said a Mason Elementary School kindergartener when she lookedat the planet Jupiter through the telescope of San Diego Astronomy Associationmember Jeff Stevens. SDAA volunteers aimed their telescopes to the heavens forclose-up views of Jupiter and its moons, with three of them clearly visible and afourth that cast its shadow on the planet. Also on view was the Great Nebula inthe constellation Orion.

“Parents and students participated in somevery cool science events. You could feel thebuzz of excitement in the air. Once youpeered into the heavens, you could see aRuben tube (a tube filled with propane whereyou could see sound waves dancing to musicvia fire), build and race a balloon rocket car, test buoyancy by building an aluminum foilboat, tear apart mussel clumps to see whatlurks inside them, learn about local animalsfrom Project Wildlife, dissect sheep eyeballs, measure how much your heart pumps, findthe mass of various objects, and learn aboutenergy conservation,” said Wangenheimscience department chair Dan Grendziak.

Dr. Matt Fallon, Wangenheim principal, extended the invitation at the January MiraMesa Schools Cluster Council meeting toparents and students from other Mira Mesaschools and to the community at large tocome to Science Night.

In the Activity Room an assembly line ofparents and students put together balloonrocket cars at a long table, then raced themacross the floor. Inside the Ruben’s tuberoom, glowing flames rose and fell along withthe sound of the cool jazz or mellow rocktunes coming from a speaker at one end of ametal tube, which looked like what onewould see in a gas-fired fireplace. Host

Robert Paterson, a UCSDgraduate student, built theapparatus.

Wangenheim science departmentchair Dan Grendziak and otherscience teachers worked togetherto organize the event.

“I’m very happy with the turn-outand I’m very proud of ourdepartment. We put a lot of workinto this event and look forwardto improving it for next year,”Grendziak said.

Make spring cleaning a snap by getting organizedfirst. It’s easier to dust or mop a surface whenthey’re cleared of stagnant clutter. Read on forbasic organizing tips and tricks to ensurehousehold spring cleaning goes quickly.

Get started: Organizing can be a challenge, especially if you’ve accumulated numerousbelongings over the years. Start with smallconsistent steps in the room that will make thebiggest impact for you. Try beginning with thebedroom because this is the first place we wakeup each day, and the last place we see beforedozing off. Avoid tackling paperwork andmemorabilia first, as these tend to be the mostdifficult to address. Warm up by sorting items youhave less fear about or attachments to.

Pace yourself: Avoid attempting to organize yourentire home and focus on one side of the room, ashelf or drawer at a time. Enjoy music, snacks, water and rest breaks as needed.

Have a “go-to” and “grab-and-go” place foreverything essential. Assign homes for items andbe sure to put things back where they belong soyou don’t leave them sitting out. Create a specificplace for your wallet/purse, sunglasses, and keyson hooks or in baskets near the door. No morewasted time searching for important items, because you’ll know where they are when youneed them.

Let go of the unnecessary and unused: Askyourself, “When was the last time I used thisitem?” or “How does this item fit into my life rightnow?” Give yourself permission to let go of thingsthat keep you stuck in the past, bring up guilt, oryou don’t love and use anymore. Doing so willmake you feel lighter and refreshed!

Focus on functionality: Spring is the perfect timeto organize and clean out those areas you’ve beenavoiding but want to use such as the garage, guest, craft or storage rooms. Decide what functions theroom will serve and activities will be enjoyedthere. Stock belongings according to where in theroom you will complete certain tasks. Any itemsthat don’t match your vision for the room’spurpose should be removed and placedelsewhere.

Make it fun! Get the family involved byscheduling a “Clear the Clutter Day”. Assign eachfamily member a bin orbag and set a timer for10-20 minutes. Instructeveryone to collect asmany items around thehouse that belong tothem. Round two: Set thetimer again for 10-20minutes. Whoever canput all the items away firstreceives the prize!

Spring is in the air, and that can meanmany things: egg hunts, flowersblooming, and spring cleaning! Yes, Isaid it, spring cleaning. It’s somethingthat has to be done. Here are threegreat tips for moms to get motivatedabout getting the house in order.

Make a schedule. Don’t overwhelmyourself by trying to clean the entirehouse all at once. Schedule 20-30minutes a day and clean or decluttersmall areas of your home at a time.Think small victories! Then you canreward yourself with your favoritetreat! Also, instead of waiting forspring cleaning, make sure everyonein the family does their part to keepthe house tidy on a regular basis.

Make it fun. Cleaning doesn’t haveto be a daunting task. Turn the radioon and turn it up! Let the musicmotivate you. Or let your cleaningtime double as your workout time.Burn some calories while you’resweeping the floor or moving boxes.

Get the whole family involved bymaking a game out of it, whoever getsdone first gets to pick what’s fordinner.

Toss it. There is somethingrevolutionary about getting rid ofthings you no longer need. Whileyou’re cleaning keep a bin out forthings you want to donate. If youdonate, as opposed to sell items, you’re more likely to get things out ofthe house faster.

I hope these tips will help get youmotivated to clean house during thespring. But, don’t just take it from me,local mom Danielle Simmons whowrites simmworksfamily.com, says,“Keep it natural... go for naturalingredient cleaners for a cheaper, better smelling clean. And as far asactually cleaning... start small. Likewith the sink. Then slowly add moreto your cleaning.”

Salk Elementary BuildingPlans Moving Forward

By: Jeff Stevens

More than 30 years after initial sitepreparation for the future SalkElementary School, an agreement tobuild the school is finally close tocompletion. The property, atthe corner of FlandersDrive and Parkdale Ave.,was created for theschool and theneighboring MaddoxPark by grading aridgetop and filling thetwo adjacent fingercanyons. For financialreasons the School District didnot continue with construction at thattime, and by the time the project wasfunded through Proposition MM,vernal pools had formed on the site.

In order to build the school a complexagreement was worked out thatincluded the school district, the City

of San Diego and the U.S. Fish andWildlife Service (USFWS). Under thatagreement the school district willpreserve and enhance vernal pools onCity-owned property adjacent to

Challenger Middle School. Amemorandum of

understanding between theCity and School Districtwas approved in 2009,but the USFWS wantedadditional propertyincluded, so the revised

MOU now also includes asmall site at the south end

of Parkdale. The revised MOUis expected to go to the School

Board within the next few weeks, andthen to the City Council. If allapprovals stay on schedule, schoolconstruction will begin this summer, there will be a ribbon cuttingceremony on Jonas Salk’s 100thbirthday in October 2014 and theschool will open in September 2015.
