25 Years As A Hockey Trainer
The 2019-2020 hockey season marks Greg Henning’s 25th
year as a Trainer. Over the years he has worked with teams in
St. Catharines, Toronto, Brampton, Waterloo, New Hamburg,
Stratford and Paris. He has been involved with U15 & U16 Pro-
grams of Excellence and holds his HTCP (Hockey Trainer Certi-
fication Program) Level III. Greg also served for 6 years in the
Canadian Forces Reserves where he trained with the 25th
Field Ambulance Unit in his last 2 years of service. In 2010,
Greg was awarded the OHA’s Crystal Puck, Alliance Hockey’s
Trainer of the Year, and Hockey Development Centre of Ontar-
io’s Dr. Tom Pashby’s Regional Trainer of the Year Awards. In
honour of his 25th anniversary, we asked Greg a few ques-
tions:
Q. Did you play hockey before becoming a Trainer?
A. Yes I played the game as a child thru to my early 30’s. I started playing at the age of 6. I still remember my very first goal. Coaches
want players to go to the net. I was in front of the net when my team mate passed the puck to me and I put it into the open side.
Q. What level of hockey did you play?
A. I primarily played in house league but did play rep hockey on occasion.
Q. Why did you become a Trainer?
A. When I was coaching house league many of my players were getting hurt. I would have to leave the bench to attend to the
player. At the end of that season I signed up for the Trainer’s courses, starting with Level 1 and then moving on up.
Q. When did you become involved with Waterloo’s Midget AAA program?
A. 2004-05 season.
Q. What is your most memorable moment (so far!) from your time with the Wolves?
A. I can’t pick just one. Winning the Alliance in 2006-07. The first trip to Europe with the 2008-09 team where we played an out-
door game in Germany. 2011-12 when we finished the regular season undefeated in regulation play. 2017-18 winning the Alliance
again with only 3 losses in the regular season.
Q. What Junior teams have you worked with?
A. 2009-11 I was with New Hamburg. In 2013-15 I was with the Siskins when they won the Cherrey Cup, their first Championship
since ’94. It was amazing to be a part of that. In 2016-17 I had a busy year back with New Hamburg, but also working with Stratford
Warriors as well as the Wolves. It was a crazy year.
Q. In 2010 you received three special awards. Why was this?
A. During my 2009-10 season with the New Hamburg Firebirds a terrible accident happened on December 29, 2009. The Fire
birds were playing in Woodstock that night. With 11:22 remaining in the 3rd period, Woodstock scored to tie the game.
Instead of a celebration, a fight broke out. After a few moments of punches the players fell to the ice and one of the
player’s skates made contact with a linesman’s throat. The linesman’s name was Kevin Brown.
Kevin’s began to lose a LOT of blood. I quickly responded along with the Woodstock Trainers. I applied pressure to his
wound and monitored his vital signs while waiting for the EMS to arrive. I’m happy to say that although he suffered a
stroke and other issues due to the blood loss and injury, Kevin survived. He and I remain in contact to this day.
Last year a book was published about life changing moments in hockey and Kevin’s story is in the book. The book is called
“Everyday Hockey Heroes” and was written by Bob MacKenzie and Jim Lang. Kevin’s story is Chapter 11 and titled “Until
the Job is Done.”
