The Highlight of October just has to be the Focusonability film competition – what an amazing event with about 360 people enjoying not just the great films (www.focusonability.com.au) but the amazing talents of the Special Olympics Dancers, the Young Talent Development Program and a finale from the amazingly talented Leo Sayer that just about had every person in the room ‘feel like dancing’.

However, Focusonability wasn’t the only thing that we achieved – more importantly, we helped almost 100 people find some fantastic employment opportunities in a wide variety of roles that now sees people with disability employed in roles as diverse as; floor sanding, engineering, farming, food preparation, graphic arts and childcare.

When people ask me what sort of work do people with disability do my

answer is always it’s much easier to list the work we’ve never been able to find, rather than the huge array of roles NOVA has filled.

More than 1000 people will make the transition from welfare recipient to taxpayer during 2012. Each of these has significant barriers that their determination and hard work has overcome – my congratulations to each one.

FOCUS ON ABILITY AWARDS NIGHT18th October saw the culmination of the Focus on Ability short film competition, with an extravagant awards night held at Hoyts Cinema, Fox Studios, Sydney. A red carpet affair that had the lobby buzzing with excited film makers, family members, employers, job seekers, NOVA staff and the general community.

With a full house in attendance the night was a smashing success, with the night expertly guided by Paralympic Gold medallist Katrina Webb.

Not only was the crowd entertained by the talents of the film makers, this was an entertainment packed evening, with performances from the Special Olympic Dancers, the Talent Development Project, not to mention the International sensation Leo Sayer, who had everyone truly buzzing.

Tears and cheers were in equal abundance, as everyone was amazed at the awe inspiring films that were capturing hearts worldwide, with people from 107 countries viewing and voting in this year’s competition.

Not everyone could walk away with a prize, but reading through the comments that provided International commendation, everyone was certainly a winner.

This won’t be the last you hear of this successful competition for the year, with an exclusive 3 part series being screened on Aurora TV in December showcasing some of the best films, so be sure to tune in.

Bankstown TTW Industry Visit to WSFM NOVA Transition to Work Bankstown

At NOVA industry visits are a fun and interactive way of learning. Our trainees get to visit different industries they are interested in and get an insight of the working environment of the company. These visits also provide trainees with a real ‘hands-on’ experience of the industry and useful work related information.

Last month Bankstown TTW were joined by Rouse Hill on an industry visit to WSFM. Upon arrival the trainees had a meet and greet with radio presenters ‘Jonesy & Amanda’. At their wittiest best, the presenters answered some questions our trainees had prepared for them about the radio station and their jobs.

We were taken around the studio and shown the technical work that goes on behind the scenes. The trainees learnt about a number of jobs available in the communications sector. As the tour continued, we also expanded our knowledge on the amount of work WSFM staff carry out to ensure efficient running of the radio station.

Later, radio presenter Bill Weaver invited us into his radio booth. He kindly showed the trainees the process of pre-recording segments and playing songs on air using several technical media equipment.

At the end of the tour, the trainees were given the opportunity to step into a recording booth. They all spoke about what they liked best about their day and about the work they are currently doing with NOVA. We all had an educational day and enjoyed it thoroughly.
