ExecutiveDirectorsMessageThe Israeli Election and UsSteven R. Wendell

I write this column on the day after the elections in Israel; the day that we learned all the pre-election polls were wrong and even the Election Day exit polling was off dramatically. Today, Benjamin

Netanyahu is confident that he will form the next Government and continue his unprecedented run as Israeli Prime Minister. Today, many folks in Washington DC, European capitals, and the folks in Ramallah are downing Tums to alleviate their upset stomachs. And in the Jewish Federation world, there is much discussion on “what does this all mean for us”?

First, let’s acknowledge that, as he has demonstrated throughout his political career, Benjamin Netanyahu is a very shrewd politician. Say whatever you like about his speeches, or where he makes his speeches, or his interviews, he makes all the so called “experts” look foolish. And in politics, winning might not be everything, but it is certainly way more important that whatever might be in second place. You cannot turn the “car” right, left, or remain in the center unless you are the driver.

As we have seen once again from our press and our commentators, we Americans, Jews and non-Jews alike, have not yet mastered a good understanding of the Israeli public. For as much as we have in common as American Jews with Israel, or even as just Americans supporting a democratic ally, or the protectors of “The Holy Land”, we live in very different worlds. We don’t send all our 18 year olds off to the army. We don’t have neighbors who refuse to recognize our right to exist. And even in consideration of 9-11, we don’t have the daily threat of rockets, suicide bombers, or eventual atomic bombs exploding in our neighborhoods. Sarah Palin (who by the way offered to promote Bibi for President of the US if he lost in Israel) may be able to see Russia from her front porch, but Israelis have terror tunnels from Gaza in their back yards. I believe I remember an old saying that goes something like: “Don’t judge a person until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.”

I have studied in, worked with, and been engaged with Israel and Israelis for over 4 decades. But I still don’t walk in their shoes and don’t pretend to fully understand them. I do know that Israelis have become less idealistic and less trusting of both their own political leaders and the outside world, including their so called “friends”. The Israeli Left, formerly identified by the Labor Party and folks like Shimon Peres and Yitzchak Rabin, and the Israeli Right, still identified by Likud and folks like Menachem Begin, Ariel Sharon, and Bibi Netanyahu, have both held out false promises for Israel and Israelis. The Left long promoted the idea that Palestinians would moderate their words and actions if they governed themselves and that a solution

to the “occupation” would lead to co-existence. The Right promoted the idea that if Israel just ignored or controlled the Palestinians long enough, they would give up on their political aspirations in favor of economic security. Begin shook hands with Sadat, Rabin shook hands with Arafat, Sharon unilaterally and with no pre-conditions gave Gaza to the Palestinians, which was preceded by Israel’s withdrawal from Southern Lebanon under Labor’s Barak. After Sharon’s stroke, Ehud Olmert took over promising to fulfill Sharon’s commitment for some sort of unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank. And the consequences of all this maneuvering by both Right and Left governments?: in 2006, Hamas launched its first tunnel operation from Gaza kidnapping Gilad Shalit, Hezbollah launched the Second Lebanon War, and fast forward to this summer when 300,000 Israelis were forced to leave their homes because of rocket attacks. Is it any wonder that Israelis have lost faith in the strategies and promises of the Left, the Right, and even the Center? And then there’s all the “international” and US peace initiatives that Israelis have learned to simply ignore. Netanyahu’s recent speech to the joint session of the US Congress did not register a blip on the Israeli election seismograph.

The Israel election was not a referendum on the so called, “two-state solution”. And regardless of what the NY Times would like us to believe, Israelis don’t really take Bibi seriously when he makes grandiose pronouncements about a Palestinian State, yes or no. Remember Ariel Sharon, the most prolific builder of settlements in Israel’s history and one of its most hawkish generals? He gave Gaza to the Palestinians and was negotiating territorial concessions in the West Bank leading to a commitment of total withdrawal. Today Netanyahu says “no Palestinian State”. Tomorrow, under the right conditions, maybe there can be.

Israelis voted for strong leadership with the hope of some new economic initiatives. They didn’t vote for any dramatic change in security because they don’t believe dramatic change is possible at this time.

For us, as American Jews (or Jewish Americans if you prefer), we need to remember that our connection to Israel runs deeper than politics, deeper than the momentary desires of Republicans, Democrats, or who might occupy the White House, deeper than the Right, Left, Center, Religious, or Secular Israeli political spectrum. This Passover, our Seders include the telling of the story of our People that goes back to Abraham, the idea of one G-d, and his resettling his family in a place called Canaan. It’s a story thousands of years old, with many twists and turns, but a story continuously rooted in a place called Israel.

A story that connects a people to a specific place that is older than any other real estate agreement we know of. For some eighteen hundred years, from the destruction of the Second Temple to the creation of modern Zionism, Israel was more a “hope” than a real place for the overwhelming majority of world Jewry. Today, the Jewish State of Israel is a reality and the people who vote in the Israeli elections are the guardians of that reality. That isn’t to say we don’t have a right, and some would even say obligation, to either support the positions of the winning party in Israeli elections or criticize those positions. And because as Jews, we are forever tied to the past, present, and future history of our people which is interwoven with the history of the land of Israel, we have a right to have opinions on everything Israeli.

In the Jewish Federation system when it comes to Israel, regardless of the debates, questions, and challenges that come up daily, we hold one principal above all others; in times of agreement or disagreement, peace or war, positives or negatives; as the old Pittsburgh Pirates used to sing during every baseball game; “WE ARE FAM-I-LY”.

Wishing everyone a Pesach Sameach!

President’sMessage

Do you have the soaps, shampoos, and other toiletries that are in your hotel rooms when you travel? People in homeless shelters, centers for abused women and other havens for the less fortunate can always use these items.

Please bring them by the UJC when you can and they will be distributed to persons in need. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Stan Glasofer at 930 -4606 or [email protected].

What we can learn from Cecil B. deMille? Neal Rosenbaum,A master story teller, Cecil B. deMille, entertained generations with his big screen depiction of the birth of Moses, the ten plagues and the Exodus from Egypt.lmagine a modern day Passover Seder where a deMille style production can come to your Seder table, complete with costumes, music and props.

For you 2015 Seder, take a lesson from Cecil and my wife, Barbara, to make your Seder that most beautiful and entertaining ever.

Start with an interesting guest list; invite newcomers to our community, coworkers and friends who love to discuss religion, local college students and professors or political leaders. Attempt to diversify your Seder table with guests who hold varying positions on religious principles and practices. Seek out non- Jewish scholars who are capable of explaining the similarities of the Passover Seder with the Last Supper, immortalized by Leonardo da Vinci.

Throw out the old Maxwell House bland Hagaddah’s and use new ones with beautiful graphics and interesting commentaries. Your Synagogue gift shop generally has a nice supply or books may be ordered on line.

Decorate your table to depict scenes from the Exodus story. One year, our family’s centerpiece consisted of the Nile River, complete with bull rushes and a basket with baby Moses. Another year, our dining room was draped with tent-like materials to represent the Sukkot-tents that our forefathers used in the desert after leaving Egypt. Invite guest to dress in period garb with long flowing colorful robes. Our table is always full of an array of frogs.

Engage in questions about the holiday. Our family would rather stop and participate in a meaningful discussion about apart of the Hagaddah than recite every word of the book. Prepare questions before the Seder and reward guests with correct answers. At our table Kosher for Passover Bazooka Gum is the prize for correct answers.

Sing songs. Every year, our Seder contains a segment of singing silly Seder songs. Most of these are conveniently located on the Internet and contain Passover themes set

to familiar tunes, such as the themes from the Flintstones, the Brady Bunch and Gilligan’s Island. Silly Seder songs involve and hold the attention of our children and this is the central mission of the Passover Seder.

Above all, make the evening fun. During the Ten Plagues have the children act out the specific plague and have your company guess which plague they are

depicting. Many years ago Barbara ordered Plague Bags online containing props for the kids; a silly mask for wild beasts; bubble wrap for boils; plastic frogs; dark sun glasses for darkness; bottles of red liquid for blood. Your home probably contains many of these same props in your children’s toy boxes and closets.

Passover Seders and traditions may be enjoyed on so many levels of observance. Select the level that best fits your beliefs. Passover is the perfect Jewish Holidaycommemorating a 3,500 year old historical event that combines a festive meal with family and friends, praising G-d for leading the Jewish People from slavery to freedom and transmitting history and memories from generation to generation. This is certainly my favorite holiday and I wish the entire community a Happy, Healthy and Kosher Passover.

Thanks to our Campaign Council, scores and volunteers and close to 500 donors, our Annual Campaign will once again raise increased funds. However, we are not ever truly done if our goal is to include every Jewish household on the Peninsula. It is never too late to consider how your pledge impacts your community. Why Federation? Why the Annual Campaign? Because we make a difference and touch lives all over the world.

On Friday February 20th seventeen CNU Hillel students joined UJCVP community members, CNU faculty, and guest students from William and Mary, Old Dominion University, and University of Virginia for a special Shabbat dinner with CNU president Paul Trible and his wife Rosemary. The evening was made possible by a generous grant from the Harold “Dooley” Cohen, Jeanne S. Cohen Fund of The United Jewish Community Endowment.

Not only was it inspiring to see CNU Hillel officers lead us in Shabbat ritual but it was also a significant step forward for Jewish life at CNU. Seniors Avery Friedman and Karen Kaufman are determined that the progress they have made building a functional Hillel at CNU will not go by the wayside when they move on next year. With the support of Sophomore president Sydney Lehrman, faculty advisor Roberta Rosenberg and the UJCVP these students formed an important

coalition of community, faculty, and UJCVP community to stage a dinner with over 60 people in attendance. Their goal was to highlight the importance of diversity on CNU’s campus and the need to have a viable, and environment for Jewish students at CNU. Students from each university present including CNU seniors Karen Kaufman and Meyrem Baer shared their thoughts regarding the importance of Hillel in their collegiate life. Karen highlighted her participation in CNU’s Presidential Leadership Program. PLP’s emphasis on a student’s responsibility to impact their environment helped shaped Karen’s own desire to make sure that CNU would have a lasting Hillel program benefiting both Jewish students and the CNU campus at large. Poquoson native, and UJCVP early childhood alum, Kayla Pomeranz, a third year at UVA, was accompanied by UVA Hillel director Rabbi Jake Rubin. Kayla brought most of the room to tears with her account of recent difficulties on UVA’s campus and how Hillel along with Rabbi Jake has become her home away from home, providing a safe haven in which to process and deal with challenging moments.

With your help, and with your Annual Campaign commitment, our community can continue to provide resources and support to our growing Jewish population at Christopher Newport, ensuring that they have guidance from a professional director and communal support in their quest to encourage diversity and a welcoming environment for Jewish students on campus.

Spirituality of Matzah Balls

Rabbi Gershon Litt

Every week my family and I are blessed to have anywhere between 5 and 20 guests for Shabbos. These guests come from various backgrounds and levels of observance and everyone knows that they are always welcome to come and enjoy a Shabbos meal. Recently, we had a gentleman who had never had a matzah ball. That’s right, we had a hard time believing it as well, but it was true. He had never had a matzah ball and my wife’s matzah ball soup was his first. He definitely enjoyed it and commented that he may have to come back soon if, for no other reason, than to make sure that the soup is always this good. We told him that we have no problem with that and anytime he wants to come for Shabbos to verify the greatness of the chicken soup with matzah balls he is welcome to do so. I have found over the years that people will sometimes start off their personal, spiritual journey in a very unknowing manner. They will not recognize, or allow themselves to recognize, that their journey is a spiritual one, but rather they will come because, “The chicken soup is so good….” Sometimes people will sign up for a class because it is intellectually interesting, not expecting to have the class change them in any way. Many people will attend a Passover seder simply because that’s what they do. They have to go to a seder, but they have no intention of the seder making an impact on them. This is the choice that each and every one of us has with every Jewish event, class, program, meal, and service we attend. Do we want to “do” something or do we want to “become” something? Am I the type of person who will participate, but never thinks that the topic applies to me or am I the type of person who wants to always try and reach my potential? As we approach Passover this is a very important

question that we should all be asking ourselves. Over the next few weeks we have a chance to break out of our personal prison that we each make for ourselves and burst out into a world of true, personal freedom. Passover is quickly approaching. At this time in history, G-d took us out from Egypt not because we fasted or prayed or repented, as was the case with Purim, but because G-d decided that it was the right time and He, Himself took us out of Egypt. There are times when we need personal effort and action. There are other times when G-d just runs the world and all we can do is follow His lead. Whichever we are experiencing at any given time there is one thing that is consistent – it all has the potential to bringing us closer to G-d. The matzah ball can bring us closer to G-d, the chicken and brisket and even the bitter herbs on Pesach can as well. It’s up to us whether we come to dinner to eat or we eat in order to serve a Higher Purpose. When we have a chance to attend a service, a meal, a program or a class we have a choice. Attend because we feel as though we have to or try to figure out how this matzah ball can bring us a little closer to G-d. If you want to know more about the spirituality of matzah balls (or anything else) feel free to be in touch.

Rabbi Gershon Litt is the Rabbi of Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, the Director of Hillel at the College of William and Mary, and the Executive Director of the Norfolk Kollel.

You CAN make a difference!

Most of us know where our next meal will come from but many receiving assistance from Jewish Family Service (JFS) don’t live with the same sense of security. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated food for the JFS food closet. This food program supports Peninsula Jewish families who come to Jewish Family Service for financial assistance. They all struggle with monthly expenses and these items are always a welcome help to them. At this time, the most needed items include canned fruit, jelly, and soup as well as gift cards for groceries to help with expenses for perishable frozen or refrigerated items. We greatly appreciate your support of our agency and the services that we provide, to those in need.

All donations of food or gift cards are tax deductible and may be dropped off at the JFS office, or at the main desk at the UJC. If it is more convenient, please send gift cards via mail to Jewish Family Service, 401 City Center Blvd., Newport News, Virginia 23606
