COMMUNITY CORNER

Do you ever find yourself waking up in the morning wondering what day is this, what week is this, or what month is this? Well, you are not alone. Here’s the scoop: it is the end of the first full week of August!. . . the beginning of the sixth month of pandemic (a word we never heard before last March). August has some good features. These days we try to look at

the bright side, and August, with its sun, almost always has a bright side. It brings us the best bounty of the summer season. I’m talking about ripened tomatoes, ripe watermelons, peaches, and sweet corn on the cob. (After August 1, corn ripens as much by night as it does by day.) Being from south New Jersey, “The Garden State,” where all of the best of the above come from, I love August for these treats.

August, by the way, was named to honor the first Roman emperor (and grand nephew of Julius Caesar), Augustus Caesar (63 B.C.-14 a.d.). August 11 marks the end of the “Dog Days of Summer,” which began on July 3. August 26 is Women’s Equality Day which celebrates the 1920 ratification of the 19th Amendment and with it, women’s right to vote in the USA. The flowers favored in August are gladiolus (which symbolizes strength of character, sincerity and generosity) and poppies (which symbolize eternal sleep and imagination).

Peridot and Sardonyx are the gems considered birthstones for August.

Now that you know more about the month in which you find yourself, I will leave it up to you to keep track of the days.

VETERANS COMMITTEE MOVIES

The Veterans Committee continues its movie program with two outstanding movies to be shown in the Media Room the week of August 9. Sign up in the Resident Business Office for the movie you wish to see. Limit is 10 residents per movie. The movies are:

Mrs. Miniver

Tuesday, August 11, 7:00 p.m.

In the spring of 1940, a young couple falls in love. The two families disagree over issues as small as which flower should represent the town. The war worsens, and Mr. Miniver takes his boat to Dunkirk to help bring the troops home. Mrs. Miniver confronts a German pilot who parachutes into her back yard. Their son flies a fighter for the RAF. His lover dies in an accident. The two families come together in church, united in defending Britain. The film won six academy awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Darkest Hour

Friday, August 14, 7:00 p.m.

In May 1940, the Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is forced to resign for being too weak in the face of the Nazi onslaught. The leaders select Winston Churchill, the First Lord of the Admiralty, since he is the only conservative that the opposition party will select. Churchill visits the French, who think Churchill is delusional for being unwilling to negotiate with the Nazis. The British force is trapped at Dunkirk, but Churchill orders them to hold fast until they can be rescued. After the evacuation from Dunkirk is successful, Churchill defies his own party and proclaims that we should “fight on the beaches,” to resounding support from the opposition party and walks out of Parliament with all supporting him. Gary Oldman, portraying Churchill, wins the Academy Award as Best Actor.

The video, only briefly at the end, touches on the solution, which is clearly shown in the shorter video that follows: Israeli vineyards thriving in the Negev desert with the drip irrigation method. A sharp contrast to the wasteful irrigation of vineyards in California shown in the earlier video.

Jackson). Over the years between, the violin travels through four different countries, where it has a profound impact on all those who own it.

LET’S GET FIT TOGETHER

WHY WEIGHT TRAIN?

Researchers at the American Journal of Medicine looked at the correlation between more muscle mass and longevity and found a statistically significant difference between those who were in the fourth quartile of muscle mass and those who were in the first quartile of muscle mass.

After adjusting for several different factors including premature death, preexisting conditions, and gender differences, the study revealed that those with the most muscle mass were less likely to have died from any cause during a 10 to 16-year follow-up. They also noticed that muscle mass was a more important predictor of longevity than body mass index. https://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(14)00138-7/fulltext

Strength can be broken down into two major areas called muscular strength and muscular endurance. Muscular strength relates to your ability to move and lift objects. It is measured by how much force you can exert and how much weight you can lift for a short period of time. Muscular endurance is the ability to use the muscles many times without getting tired. When strength training, it is important to target both types of strength.

Have you tried Total Body class? In Total Body class we train both types of strength. Standing and seated Total Body classes are taught on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:50 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively. Come join a class today.
