A word from the Administrator…
The exceedingly long, cold snowy winter is beginning
to exit and spring with its promise of renewal is just
around the corner. We have been very busy during the
past several months implementing the new MDS 3.0
system, which was designed by Medicare to enhance
the quality of care in nursing homes. This new assess-
ment tool has been specifically designed to include the
resident and their family in the process. Our staff has
devoted a great deal of time implementing this new data
collection system which will enhance the staff‘s ability
to assure that our residents‘ requests and preferences are
sought after and honored.
Our three month pro bono project with Pfizer was offi-
cially launched during February to an excited, moti-
vated and dedicated group of individuals (please see
more details on page 7). Our projects goal is to create a
process improvement to advance the care of our Alz-
heimer‘s residents at Fairview. Working together with
Fairview, the Pfizer team will incorporate key stake-
holders – residents, staff, volunteers, residents‘ families
and the Culture Change Committee – in the develop-
ment of a process improvement plan to help staff and
volunteers easily implement, sustain and track improve-
ments. In just the first few weeks of this partnership
we‘ve witnessed some beneficial changes with our
memory impaired residents and look forward to many
more transformations that will benefit all the residents
of Fairview.
I‘m delighted to be able to let you know that in our an-
nual inspection by the State Health Department we had
a deficiency free survey. This couldn‘t have been ac-
complished without the dedicated and devoted staff that
we are blessed with. My sincerest thanks to all the
amazing individuals who helped make this possible.
James K. Malloy, Administrator

DEVELOPMENT REPORT
The winter months have certainly taken a toll on our patience and psyches. But the spirit of giving is alive and well at
Fairview. We are very fortunate to have wonderful donors who continue to support our mission. Successes in calen-
dar year 2010 include:
$167,418.80 was collected in total contributions from a record 795 donations
Most successful annual fund drive to date – 133 donations for $20,980.00
Twelve grants totaling $24,179.00 – another record
Car raffle proceeds of $24,277.00 – another record
Antiques & Collectibles auction - $59,197.52
During these difficult economic times it is truly remarkable that so many wonderful friends and supporters of Fair-
view continue to be so generous. Our five car raffles have raised over $97,000.00 and our eight Antiques & Collecti-
bles Auctions have provided just over $380,000.00 in net profit (see previous newsletter issues on our website
www.oddfellowsct.com for a complete list of businesses who have been auction sponsors). Several Foundations and
Corporations including Chelsea Groton Bank, Dominion Nuclear, Pfizer, Dime Bank, NewportFed Bank, The Sav-
ings Institute, People‘s Bank, Charter Oak Federal CU, Groton Rotary, Mystic Rotary, Wal-Mart, Groton Utilities,
Murtha Cullina LLP, Morin Associates, and UBS have also played a major role in our ability to buy new
equipment and offer new programs.
Our 2011 annual fund began in January and will conclude on December 31, 2011. If you have not already made a
pledge and would like to do so now a pledge envelope is included in this issue. All proceeds this year will be used to
purchase equipment for advances in technology and any other programs applicable to enhancing the quality of life of
our residents.

SAVINGS
INSTITUTE
MAKES
DONATION
The Savings Insti-
tute recently pro-
vided a $529.00
grant for the pur-
chase of an oxygen concentrator analyzer. We use
several oxygen concentrator tanks and each has to be
checked for quality operation on a quarterly basis or
when a malfunction is detected. Fairview previously
had to hire an outside vendor to do these checks.
Having our own analyzer will save us considerable
funds so that we can allocate precious resources to
other areas of resident care. Pictured presenting the
check to David Brown, Director of Development, is
Elisabeth Page, Groton Savings Institute Branch
Manager.
FELLOWSHIP MANOR RESIDENT HONORED
FOR SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY
Through the efforts of several members of the Fairview
staff and particularly receptionist, Liz Weeks, Fellowship
Manor resident Billy Joe Foreman was honored for ser-
vice to his country. A special presentation was held in

Mr. Fore-

Captain A.
Michael Edgar USNR, (brother of Liz Weeks) presented
Mr. Foreman with a certificate signed by the Command-
ing Officer of the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) in
commemoration of ―your extensive service and retire-
ment as a Chief Commissaryman in the United States
Navy.‖ He was also presented with a pen constructed
from wood taken from the USS Constitution, the oldest
ship in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Foreman retired in 1966 after
serving his country for over 21 years. Pictured cutting a
special cake made for the occasion is Mr. Foreman with

POPULAR
BISTRO
BREAKFAST
FOR
RESIDENTS
NOW
AVAILABLE
TWO DAYS A
WEEK
Last year Fairview added a special culture change break-
fast in the Bistro for residents. The response has been so
good that a second day is now included. On Tuesday
and Thursday mornings all residents whose diets permit
can go to the Bistro for a ready-to-order breakfast con-
sisting of any style of eggs, home fries, bacon or sausage,
pastries, fruit, juice, coffee or tea. Their order is taken by
a staff volunteer and delivered freshly made minutes after
being prepared. This has been one of the biggest culture
change initiatives at Fairview, but certainly not the only
one. Other initiatives include fine dining, revamped
shower rooms, empowering the residents and encourag-
ing them to create an award to give to staff members they
feel deserve recognition, renaming of hallways to local
streets, and ‗Healing Touch‘ therapy.
MATCHING GIFT LEADS TO RECORD-
SETTING ANNUAL FUND
The 2010 annual fund set records for the number of
donors and money collected. Once again the Grand
Lodge of Connecticut led the way matching all total
gifts up to $5,000.00. All donations were placed in
Fairview‘s technol-
ogy fund to help pay
for the ongoing ex-
penses of our elec-
tronic medical re-
cords system. One
hundred and thirty-
three donations
raised a total of
$20,980.00. In comparison the first annual fund in
2006 raised just $4,485.00. The Grand Lodge has
again agreed in 2011 to match up to $5,000.00 in
total gifts. Pictured presenting the 2010 $5,000.00
matching gift check to Administrator Jim Malloy are
(L-R) Hank Lucas, Odd Fellows Healthcare 1st VP,
Warren Smith, Secretary of the Connecticut Grand
Lodge, Dick Campbell, Odd Fellows Healthcare
President, and Jim Malloy.

A FEW TESTIMONIALS FROM
RESIDENTS’ FAMILIES
January 28, 2011
To the Staff of Fairview,
Our most sincere thanks to each of you for the kindness and
care you gave to my mother Sylvia during her brief stay. So
many of you worked to meet all of her needs and to make her
comfortable. Our family appreciates your professionalism and
your humanity. You helped make a difficult time a little easier.
Our best wishes for a good New Year for you all.
Melvin and Iris Yoselevsky.

To the Fairview Staff:
Once again, I want to thank you all for all you did to get my
Mom, Shirley Jacobsen, back on her feet. I can always count
on you to do the best for her. It is a great relief to me when she
is in your care. I hope you know how very grateful I am for all
that you do. God Bless you all!

Dear Staff of Fairview Nursing Home,
We are very grateful to you for the loving care you gave to our
mother, Julia Parker, who passed away at your home on No-
vember 27. She seemed very comfortable with you, and we
knew that we could count on your care for her every need.
You helped make a very sorrowful time much easier for her
and for us. Thank you so much.
Sincerely, the Parker Family – Don, Martha, Jerry, Karen, Tim,

DOMINION
NUCLEAR
CONNECTICUT
INC. MAKES
$10,000.00 GIFT
Fairview has wanted
to replace its aging
dishwasher in the
dietary department
for some time. The current machine is over thirty years
old. It is very inefficient and has to be repaired often. A
new dishwasher is quite expensive so we haven‘t had the
funds to buy one. Dominion Nuclear has come to our aid
by making a $10,000.00 donation to help offset the cost
of a new industrial size dishwasher. This is the lead gift
we needed to give us the momentum to make the pur-
chase. The new industrial size dishwasher will save Fair-
view over $9,000.00 per year in water and energy costs.
Pictured presenting the ‗check‘ to David Brown, Director
of Development, is Nancy Bulkeley, Community Affairs
Representative at Dominion Nuclear Connecticut, Inc.
RESIDENTS BENEFIT
FROM DONATIONS
Four new robe, towel and
blanket warmers have
been purchased by Fair-
view through the generos-
ity of The Savings Institute and the Mystic Rotary
Club. These warmers provide much comfort to resi-
dents at various times of the day and particularly af-
ter bathing. Items like this are critical to the culture
change at Fairview and are one more way we can
improve the quality of life for our residents.
PENTAGON 9/11 BOMBING SURVIVOR
SPEAKS AT FAIRVIEW
Dan Holdridge captivated an audience of over 40 people
in Fairview‘s auditorium on December 2 recounting his
harrowing experience the day the Pentagon was attacked
on September 11, 2001. Dan was working for General
Dynamics as a Program Director on loan to the Pentagon
as a contractor. He was injured in the blast and was one
of only two survivors from his work group of thirty-four.
One-hundred and
eighty-four people
were killed that day at
the Pentagon. Dan has
written a book called
―Pentagon Prayer‖
which describes in
detail the entire or-
deal. Dan dedicates
his time speaking to
people across the country about his experience, what
helped him heal and how he became an even stronger
person than ever before. Dan serves as President and
CEO of Eagle Industries Inc. located in Westerly, RI. He
is also very involved with the National 4-H Leadership
Trust and served as a trustee from 2002 to 2004. Pictured
with Dan (seated) at the Fairview program are: (L-R)
guest Fred Sousa, Mary, Sepowitz, Noble Grand of Odd
Fellows Lodge #17 and Dan‘s aunt, and Richard Tru-
delle, Noble Grand of Stonington Lodge #26.

PFIZER BEGINS PRO BONO INITIATIVE
FOR CULTURE CHANGE
Pfizer, Inc. has chosen Fairview from several other
non-profits in the southeastern Connecticut area to
implement a pro bono project to develop culture
change recommendations with a focus on care for
Alzheimer‘s residents, and create a plan to imple-
ment them. The Pfizer team will work with Fair-
view‘s Culture Change Committee and other key
stakeholders (residents‘, staff, and residents‘ fami-
lies) to research and create recommendations for cul-
ture change improvements, with a focus on Alz-
heimer‘s residents. Working with Fairview the team
will then develop a process improvement plan to
help staff and volunteers easily implement, sustain
and ideally track culture change improvements for
Alzheimer‘s resident‘s. Progress from this work
could then be used as a template for Fairview to ex-
pand later to other parts of the organization.
This program will last for approximately 3 months
ending in May/June. There will be six members on
the Pfizer team. A final progress report will be in-
cluded in the June Point O‘ View.
