A Message of Life Ascension of Our Lord
Mark 16:15-20
Does the Ascension of Our Lord have a meaning for our culture today? We people of the 21st Century have the possibility to explain all the mysteries of the world through the laws of physics. Through science we can be sure that no other reality exists apart from what we can see with our eyes, and touch with our hands. Our destiny appears to be closed in by the short time and space that history has assigned to us. Is there a way for us to go beyond this horizon that our sight can control?
The Ascension of Jesus invites us to reject this pessimistic view of our existence. We live in history but we are not slaves of history. Our Christian Faith rejects the scientific culture which wants to imprison our life into a pessimistic flow of history.
We are created so that we may overcome the physical reality of the world. We are not made to be confined to the short span of time that history has reserved for us. Is the totality of reality just this material world? Only a hidden spiritual dimension explains the existence of the Word. Only a mysterious providential design guides the events of history. We cannot separate heaven and earth, matter and spirit, visible and invisible. “The deepest things in life are the invisible ones.” [Little Prince]
Looking at the Ascension of Jesus we can expand our sight beyond our physical possibilities. We see that our destiny is not determined by the physical laws of matter. “You have made us for You, Oh God, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You!” [St. Augustine] Fr. Joseph Durante, c.s.
