HSC Examinations The class of 2018 is now on the final leg of their high school life. The Higher School Certificate examination will take place over the next three weeks, concluding on 9th November. On behalf of everyone at school the year twelve students are congratulated for achieving this significant milestone .All dedicated parents and teachers a are appreciated for their role in providing the support to the students. HSC results will be available to the Year twelve students from Thursday 13 December. The students have worked hard and we pray to Allah SWT to always guide them and continue to shower His choicest blessings on all the students. Year 12 Graduation

On the last day of Term Three, Year twelve

students attended their Graduation Ceremony

with their family members. The Ceremony was

a huge success that celebrated the hard work

of students and staff. Ms Anne Stanley MP -

Member for Werriwa, New South Wales was

our Chief Guest for the night and she wished

them well.

Assalaam Alaikum WRWB Dear Parents/Guardians Assalaamu Alaikum Welcome back to a busy Term four! The staff are working focussed on preparing students for the final examinations that are approaching. This is a very short term consisting of nine weeks and parental engagement is very crucial in terms of academic development of your child/ren. Examinations Parents are strongly urged to ensure their child/ren is committed to school work so that they can perform to the best of their abilities. Term Four stipends have been sent to your email account. Fees for this term are due and I would like to thank the parents who have settled their accounts. Fees Non-payment of overdue fees will result in school reports and portfolios being withheld first until the fees are paid in full. If the overdue fee is not settled by the end of this term then the school will have no choice but to review your child(ren)'s enrolment. Examinations for Year 7, 8, 9 & 10

In Term Four Year 7-10 students will sit for their Yearly

Examinations. The students will be receiving revision

lessons leading up to these examinations. Students

must also revise at home to ensure they do well. Our

school’s Promotions Policy will be exercised for any

student not achieving the minimum expectations. An

extract of this policy emphasising quality of school work

is as follows:

The Promotions Policy defines procedures and rules for retaining non-performing students in their current level and promoting students to the next level. One of the aims of the Promotions Policy is to encourage students to take their school work seriously.

Please be informed that for students to be promoted

to the next level they must:

1. Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to their

studies by working consistently throughout the

year;

2. Develop good work ethics and organisational

skills;

3. Satisfactorily complete all assigned work and

Assessment Tasks;

4. Have acceptable attendance;

5. Demonstrate acceptable behaviour as per the

Welfare Policy;

Parents of the students who achieved below

expectations of their child’s Half Year Examination at

the start of semester two.

Yearly Examination Timetables will be released soon

and students and parents are once again reminded that

no leave will be approved during the period of these

examinations.

New Year Twelve

We have had meetings with all Year twelve students to

discuss the high expectations we have at the Green

Valley Islamic College. Based on their Year Eleven

Preliminary Examination results discussions were held

with students and some parents to outline the work

ethics they must demonstrate for the successful

completion of Higher School Certificate. Our new Year

twelve students will be issued with an Assessment

Information and Schedules Booklet and the 2019 HSC

Rules and Procedures Handbook soon. Parents are

requested to read these documents and ensure that

their child/ren complete all assessments as stated in the

Handbook.

Year 10 Work Experience

Green Valley Islamic College is conducting a Work

Experience Program aimed at providing our Year ten

students with the opportunity to experience and

participate in real workplaces of their choice during the

weeks commencing 26th November 2018 to 7th

December 2018. We hope this experience will help

students assess their own suitability for the job and be

of value when making a choice of occupation and/or

future education and training. In addition, students will

aim to develop social and communication skills whilst

on work experience.

HSC: All My Own

HSC: All My Own Work is a program designed to help

HSC students follow the principles and practices of good

scholarship. This includes understanding, valuing and

using ethical practices when locating and using

information as part of their HSC studies.

Students who have completed the program will also

know about penalties for cheating and how to avoid

malpractice when preparing their work for assessment.

To be eligible for the HSC, students must complete HSC:

All My Own Work (or its equivalent) before they submit

any work for Preliminary (Year eleven) or HSC (Year

twelve) courses.

Our current Year ten students will be completing the

above program in week six this term after their Yearly

Examination. It is a compulsory component of

Preliminary and HSC studies and as such attendance

after the Year 10 Yearly Examination is essential.

Diaries

Parents are yet again reminded to sign their child’s diary

at the end of each week to check if there are any

messages from teachers. Diary checks are carried out by

roll call teachers during roll call. Students are expected

to display the diary in each lesson so that teacher

messages can be written and they can note down the

given homework. Failure to use diaries effectively can

lead to poor organisation, problems with time

management and in turn, lower academic results.

“Behind every young child who believes in himself is a parent who believed first.” - Matthew Jacobson. The English Department would like to emphasise the significant role that parents play in the education of their students, especially in Term Four - a crucial term of the Academic year - which concludes with the Yearly Examinations. We would like to remind all parents to continue helping and encouraging their children to enhance their reading and writing skills, thus actively participating in their children’s learning experiences. Students are also advised to make effective use of the ICT reading program -“WordFlyers” – which can also be accessed at home, to assist with their literacy skills in English. Furthermore, Renaissance Accelerated Reader reading program with an ICT base that will improve writing skills and enhance student’s vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Please note the Yearly Examination will begin in Week Five and continue into Week Six for the students in Years seven to ten. The years seven and eight will be assessed on the units of work that have been taught throughout Semester Two only, while years nine and ten will be assessed on the work done throughout the whole year. Additionally, as students have been working assiduously throughout this academic year, they need to ensure that their workbooks are well-maintained, up-to-date and reflect their hard work, so as to revise effectively. With constant dedication and a passion for learning, the students will definitely achieve their desired academic goals and learning outcomes. Therefore, the English Team, along with the English Coordinator, would like to wish every student of Green Valley Islamic College the very best for the Yearly Examination, reiterating the fact that “there is no

substitute for hard work which leads to successful learning”.

Year 12 Graduation Ceremony

The 2018 Year Twelve Graduation Ceremony held on the evening of 28th September at Skyview Reception and Function Centre, hosted by Mrs Saireen Hussain was a momentous and sentimental event. Forty two graduates were acknowledged with graduation certificates and plaques and congratulated by the chief guest, Local Member of Parliament, Honourable Ann Stanley and other distinguished and prominent guests and teachers on their academic and extracurricular progress at the Green Valley Islamic College.

An inspirational speech was delivered by GVIC Alumni Mohammed Rumman who graduated from Green Valley Islamic College in 2012 and has now attained Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Business from UTS. He spoke about the opportunities and responsibilities of being part of the broader community, the trials and tribulations and how hard work and determination fosters successful individual lives. Wisam Merhebi’s and Zahirah Hussein’s speeches on reminiscing about the journey of the schooling days were heart touching and revealed the deep and everlasting emotional bond created between the year twelve students during the schooling years. Their speeches also significantly touched on the dreams and aspirations of the Year Twelve graduates. The following students ranked first in the following subjects:

NAPLAN Results

We would like to acknowledge the effort of parents, all the staff involved (including support and teacher aides) and students of Years 3 and 5 as the NAPLAN results for 2018 are impressive. We would also like to thank everyone involved in improving the results as a tremendous amount of effort had been put in for such a record. Well done to Amir Khan (5B), Humaira Ali (5G), Safa Shafquat (5R), Nisha Naeem (3B), Mariam Saad (3B), Zahraa Sari (3B), Sumaiya Khan (3G), Hifza Ali (3G), Aamina Haq (3R), Noorulain Istiaq (3R) and Aykaan Obut (3R) for achieving four out of five top bands in NAPLAN. These ELEVEN students missed out by one band to reach the top group. Congratulations to the students photographed below for their outstanding top bands in all areas of NAPLAN. In comparison to the state’s national average and statistically similar school group (SSSG), which replaces AIS comparison, the results for GVIC are as follows:

Parents’ Workshop

To acknowledge the effort of parents and to guide them to support their own children in a more structured manner, a workshop for parents was held on the 13th of September. The focus was on Student Portal, Writing skills, Reading strategies and how to help students with Maths Problem Solving at home. Parents had access to presentations on areas such as application of Mathematical concepts in problem solving, six key reading strategies and information on students’ portal. Parents participated in rotational concept based hands on activities that can be replicated at home using improvised materials. In future there will be another workshop, a “Sharing Session”, allowing willing parents to share their experiences that have enabled their children to excel. These parents are thanked in advance for their willingness to participate.

Book Character Parade

The school ground on the 19th of September was

adorned with characters that seemed to make books

come alive. The costumes reflected the efforts of the

students to closely resemble the characters. Teachers

further spiced up the event by dressing up as

characters. Students were also delighted with the

decoration done by the teacher aides and support staff

as it depicted the theme on “Find Your Treasure”. Some

of the highlights of the events were Book quizz or Trivia,

stage presentations, “red carpet walk” and audience

quizz. We thank the large number of parents who filled

the school hall to motivate the students and the effort

of the organising teachers. We wish all our students

and parents happy reading moments until the next

parade.

Pre-kindergarten Orientation Day

Pre-kindergarten Orientation Session was scheduled on the 23rd of October 2018. Pre-kindergarten classes commenced on the same day and most of the students were very settled and engaged. Similar to last year, this year we will run three sessions of classes to accommodate all the students. For further clarification, parents are requested to contact the School Office. We are very grateful to those parents who gave the school positive feedback and reciprocally we thank you for your cooperation.

It was also wonderful to welcome our pre-kindergarten students on Saturday 4th August 2018 as they sat for probably their first test. Most of them were confident and superbly completed their assessment with good scores. The school would like to thank those parents

who have other children in the school and have maintained focus on high level of Literacy/Numeracy of their pre-kindergarten child/ren.

2018 Mathletics Report

According to the report provided by the Mathletics

providers, on average our students have improved by

33% this school year. The improvement is based on

comparison of their first attempt which was 77.31%

while their latest attempt score is 90.01%. The three

students: Amir Khan (5B), Maryam Hebah Khan (6R) and

Mohammed Ilyaan Yunus (5R), (photographs shown

below) have been awarded Super Mathlete Certificate.

Congratulations to these students for effectively using

the e-resource.

Year Six Promotion

For students to transit effectively to high school there is an essential need for them to be well equipped with Literacy and Numeracy skills. Years Two, Four and Six students are required to enhance their development in these two areas by the regular use of Excel Test Zone, which is an online learning tool. They are also required to engage in regular reading and completing set homework and assignments to a high standard. Parents are reminded that Year Six students will sit for the GAT examination on the 8th of November 2018. Teachers are humbly requesting for parental support in monitoring student progress.

Athletics Carnival

The Primary Athletics Carnival has been rescheduled for the 31st of October, 2018. Students are to strictly adhere to the dress code for the carnival and will be expected to display exemplary behaviour. Please ensure that they are equipped with their lunch, school hats and drinking water as well as sunscreen for the day. Parents are encouraged to support the students by joining them for the event. Parents are also reminded that the canteen at the carnival will be run by the school, selling drinks and snacks to help raise funds for the Year Six Graduation. There is a need for support to run the canteen and it would be appreciated if parent volunteers made themselves available.
