Happy February everyone!
I hope that you all are continuing to tolerate this
cold season with a smile on your face. Sometimes
when we get to this point in the year we are ready
for something new. I am therefore pleased to inform
you that this month begins the season of Lent,
and with it, various opportunities for worship,
study, and fellowship.
We begin the Lenten season on February 14th with
Ash Wednesday. We will have services that day at
noon and 7:30. Then each week in Lent up to Holy
Week we will have Lenten midweek services and
study on Wednesdays. We will gather at 11:00 on
Wednesday mornings for worship and this will be
followed by lunch in Highland Hall. Then in the
evenings we will have supper in Highland Hall at
6:00 followed by a study on the Creed at 6:45
and concluding with worship at 7:30.
As always we welcome you to any and
all gatherings that you can attend!
What a blessing it is to be able to journey together as
a community of faith through this season of
repentance, knowing that as we turn towards God
once again, we are reminded of all that God has
done for us in Christ Jesus our Lord and we can
give thanks for this great gift together.
Soli Deo Gloria!
(To God Alone be the Glory!)

A former pastor of our congregation
has entered the Church Triumphant.
The Rev. Dr. Elwood Leister, pastor of St. John’s of Highland from 1970-1991,
passed away on January 15th.
Pastor Leister and his wife, Shirley,
have been living in Chambersburg for several years,
and two of their children, Cindy Kelly and Drew Leister,
are members of our congregation.
Expressions of sympathy for his wife, Shirley, can be sent
to: 380 S. Coldbrook Avenue; Chambersburg, PA 17201.
Memorial donations can be made to:
United Lutheran Seminary;
61 Seminary Ridge; Gettysburg, PA 17325
in thanksgiving for Pastor Leister’s education at
THE Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg.
We give thanks for the good and faithful service
of Pastor Leister, and for the new life he has now
in our heavenly home. Please keep Shirley, Cindy, Drew,
Blaine, Myra, and their whole family in
your prayers in the days ahead as they
grieve his passing.
May they find comfort and hope
in the promise of the resurrection.

STEWARDSHIP STEW
We have whipped through January at breakneck speed.
It seems we spent most of it shoveling snow. Hence, we
may not have taken the time to sit down and list those
pesky resolutions for the coming year…those resolutions that
probably would have gone by the wayside by now anyway.
So, in the interest of good stewardship of your good intentions here is
a list of comfortable, meaningful resolutions that could make this
your best year ever!
√ Don’t wait for people to be friendly, show them how.
√ Never look down on anyone, unless you are helping them up.
√ Carry a heart that never hates, a smile that never fades and a
touch that never hurts.
√ Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.
√ Love thy neighbor and if it requires that you bend the truth,
the truth will understand.
√ Never miss an opportunity to make others happy,
even if you have to leave them alone in order to do it.
√ Love your enemies, it will confuse them greatly.
* Today, give a stranger one of your smiles.
It might be the only sunshine he or she will see all day *
Now that Christmas 2017 is over,
it's time to think about Bethlehem 2018!
(Yes, really!)
On Sunday February 4th after the 10:30 service, all are welcome at the
Bethlehem Kick Off Meeting. We will discuss dates, leadership needs, and opportunities, etc.
If you have ideas, we want to hear them! If you are interested but can't
attend the meeting, we still need you and will happily keep you updated
and involved in planning along the way.
Please contact Nancy Sheleheda at 724-506-2089 or via email at
[email protected] for more information.

CHRISTIAN LITERACY JANUARY 2018
Individually scheduled training workshops held at St. John’s of Highland
in Pittsburgh are available for the remainder of the year to
accommodate Christian Literacy’s seasonal commitments.
“All the world lives in two tents- content and discontent.”
What if you learned that one in four people, around the globe,
15 years of age or older cannot read at all? What if you read that if a
child does not experience some success in early basic reading skills then
by the middle of first grade negative attitudes toward reading will create
a mental wall setting them on the path of failure? What if you
discovered that YOU could make a life-changing difference for an adult
or child by becoming a Christian Literacy volunteer tutor this year?
Christian Literacy Community Literacy Training Workshops
will be held at St. John’s of Highland on Cumberland Road from
9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The workshops are free and basic literacy materials,
The Christian Literacy Series, will be available for a donation
upon completion of the training session. If you are discontented with
having a family member or community member unable to read and want
to do something about it, call Christopher Ebner to reserve your place
at a Christian Literacy workshop this year: 412-364-3777 or email
Saturday, March 17th from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Saturday, April 7th from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Be content to show love to others by determining to be
a light in the darkness of illiteracy today!
Page 9 Page 10
St. John's Stampers
The St. John’s Stampers will meet on
Saturday, February 17 from 9am until noon.
We will be “thinking Spring” and Easter.
All are welcome. There is a cost of $5/person to help cover the cost of materials.
Hope you will join us!
Preschool Panorama
Our preschoolers are getting ready for Valentine’s Day.
They enjoy giving special valentines to all their friends
to show them how much they are loved!
The 2’s are doing a very good job separating from a parent/caregiver.
They will be learning how to share and be kind to their friends.
The 3’s are learning about the weather, numbers, and letters of the
alphabet. They will have great practice writing their name on the
valentine’s cards!
The 4’s will learn about penguins, have a pajama party, and make a pizza
snack. They will be hanging lots of hearts around the classrooms.
The pre-k children are continuing to develop their phonics skills,
learn about transportation, and famous artists. They will be crafting
away using lots of reds, pinks, and purples for valentine’s day.
We are taking registrations for
the 2018/2019 school year.
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
