Principal’s Report Amanda Williams Celebration of learning at FPS This week has been full of a variety of celebrations to mark the end of term. Congratulations to the Year 3s who celebrated on Tuesday afternoon with a big exhibition “Friend or foe”. They shared their information posters, quizzes, vocabulary games and used Adobe Sparkes Video on iPads to create sensational reports about a variety of animals and insects. Year 4s had their exhibition on Wednesday afternoon with some fabulous information reports, both on posters and iPads. Students created mini documentaries incorporating green screens and transforming their footage into a television studio where it seemed that they were real TV presenters. Students also created accompanying music using Garage band. Whilst down stairs our Prep students held an exhibition about their favourite places. There were dioramas of our favourite parks, ballet studios, homes, swimming pools and all accompanied by their detailed information reports. Our Preps are really great writers. Thank you to all of our parents who visited the exhibition sessions and took so much interest in our learning. FPS students take a lot of pride in their work and like sharing their learning! Peer review Day 1 As mentioned in previous InTouch newsletters, FPS is currently participating in a peer review. This opportunity provides an independent analysis of our school's performance against the goals and targets in the strategic plan. A review is part of an improvement cycle that all schools participate in every four years and evaluates our school's strengths and the impact of our improvement efforts. The peer review also draws on the expertise and experience of professionals such as an accredited independent reviewer and other experts, who evaluate performance outcomes and practice, work collaboratively with the school team to plan for improved student outcomes. Last Friday was our first peer review day and we worked with our review team- Dr Toni Stroud- Monash University, Senior Education Improvement Leader- Mona Malouf, Carlton Gardens PS Principal- Tina McDougall, Truganina P-9 College Principal- Jenni Crowle, FPS School Council Vice President Amelia Moore plus a FPS teaching team- Sandra McOrist (AP), Dave Meyer (leading teacher), Emily Fintelman (yr 6 team leader), Chris Mizis (yr 4 team leader) and Grace Mittas (yr 2 teacher). A team of year 6 students also took 2 separate school tours for the visiting panel and discussed their learning, goals and favourite learning environments. After interrogating our data, we then created the agenda for Day 2 (next term) where we will further research topics that will provide recommendations to inform the next 4-year Strategic plan for FPS. Following the final panel day in term 4, our reviewer Dr Toni Stroud will prepare a report capturing the consensus view of the panel. We look forward to sharing the recommendations from the peer review and strategic plan with our community later in term 4. >>>Cont. Farewell and good luck Dave Meyer

We wish our wonderful Dave Meyer all the best as he and his family permanently relocate to the Gold Coast at the end of this term. Dave has also accepted a position as an English and Generalist teacher at Varsity College. Dave has been a brilliant teacher to so many of our students and a hard working member of our School Council, Policy Committee and Leadership Team. Dave’s Year 2 class welcomes Jacqueline Lenko to the team. Jacqueline has been an emergency relief teacher with FPS for most of this year and is well known to Dave’s class plus our FPS team. Enjoy that sunshine Dave! Happy Holidays Finally, on behalf of all of the staff, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful and restful term break. Thank you to all of our many volunteers who work in our classrooms, the library, swimming supports, HUB volunteers, canteen, Recumbent bike trainers, excursion support… the list goes on! You have helped to make term 3 so amazing and have supported the learning and fun at FPS. We look forward to seeing you all again in two weeks for a very exciting and jam packed last term of learning for the year- term 4!

Assistant Principal Sandra McOrist

It is nearly holiday time and we welcome families to use the school throughout the break. I would like to remind families that the school playgrounds are recommended for specific age groups, Prep-2 are in front of the portables and 3-6 are in the Amphi.

If you are in the school and are concerned about anything at all, please ring the local police on 9371 6100.

Have a happy and safe holiday break.

Hats Term 4

Just a reminder that it is an education department rule that we all wear wide brimmed hats when

outside at school, during term 1 and 4, caps are not acceptable.

The rule is no hat no play and the children are expected to sit on the blue seats outside the prep

rooms.

School Council News

SRC NEWS

Are you ready to walk in October?

Flemington Primary School will be participating in Walk to School in October this year, starting the first day back of Term 4. Walk to School encourages us all to walk to and from school every school day in October. You can be involved by either walking, riding or scooting to and from school. If you live too far away, check out the park and walk locations on the Walk to School’s website so that you can park your car and walk to school (http://www.mvcc.vic.gov.au/mooneevalleyschools.htm).

Walking to and from school throughout October will help you and your child to build healthy habits for life, improve fitness and build friendships. Walking to school can also help us reduce traffic congestion, parking difficulties around our school and reduce the associated environmental impacts.

Participating students are asked to track their walks on the Walk to School classroom calendar and fill in an individual challenge card (to be provided to students by the SRC day 1 of Term 4). On Tuesday the 10th of October, council officer Maree Robinson will be handing out gold stars for students’ challenge cards at the Wellington Street crossing.

Those who hand in their challenge card to the office at the end of October enter the Victorian Schools draw to win a voucher to sports stores, Bounce and Westfield!

Other ways to get involved and prizes

Walking to school in style

Walk to School is encouraging all kids to get creative and deck out their shoes, bike or scooter for Walk to School month! You can even win cool prizes by sending your designs to [email protected] or sharing them on VicHealth’s Facebook page. If your school has a uniform policy, you can get ideas for decorations that can easily be removed during school hours on the Walk to School website.

Poster challenge

The council will be holding a poster challenge for all students participating in Walk to School month.

If you choose to create a poster, it could show:

students and their friends walking to school

something funny, pretty or interesting that students have seen while walking to or from school

a slogan about why kids should walk to school

if students are too far to walk all the way, their poster could highlight park and walk locations

To enter, students should complete their poster and put it up in a visible position at school, then email [email protected] with their name, phone number, school, a photo of their poster and its location. The three most creative designs will be framed, displayed at a Council venue and on Facebook, and three Council staff will choose a winner. The winning artist will receive a sports store voucher valued at $150. For more details, please visit https://www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au/

Thank you for participating!

Thank you to Hamish and Elsbeth, and all our other volunteers for Term 3. MEETING REPORT

Thank you to all who could attend the HUB meeting on Tuesday night. We briefly reviewed the HUB events of term 3, and started planning for term 4. Of course the 2018 fete was on the agenda and I can say the bubbles of excitement are starting to brew. On a serious note, a review of the HUB constitution is underway, to ensure it is in line with the Department of Education standards – this had us all reaching for the chocolate brownies! TERM 4

We kick off Term 4 with:

THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND IDEA FEST FOR THE FETE

Farmers Market Christmas Cake Stall - 10/12/2017

The HUB is once again organising a Christmas Cake Stall to be held at the Flemington Farmer’s Market on Sunday December 10th. We will be looking for volunteers to bake these

delicious cakes. If you haven’t yet experienced this extravaganza – the ingredients are all lovingly weighed and packaged for your convenience and instructions are clearly written – even I have had success! We then take orders and sell the remainder at the farmers market along with other goodies. So flex those baking muscles over the holidays!
