Director’s Corner As our 50th Anniversary Year continues please keep an eye on this newsletter for more events. Thank you to everyone who is helping make this a very special year at the Library! Daylight Savings begins on March 13th, Saint Patrick’s Day is the 17th and the first day of Spring is the 20th! Then, there are our important religious holidays! March is a busy month for everyone as we shake off the winter-time blues and come out of our homes. In our West entrance hall, we have put an Italian coffee machine and tables and chairs and a lamp to entice you to meet your friends and socialize a bit. This is a place meant primarily for our adult patrons and is calmer and quieter than the Bridges Café. We have put in photographs of Amsterdam & tulips, reminiscent of South Holland’s Dutch heritage, and given the café a Dutch name, Koffie Plaats. Please come and try it out! Library Goes Green : Re-Peats! One of the early harbingers of spring in Chicago is the Chicago Auto Show in February, that showcases the best and brightest the auto industry provides. For those who are in the market for a new car but could not attend, a wealth of information is still available to help make informed decisions, including ecologically. One cost many forget to consider is the annual fuel cost. The U.S. Department of Energy publishes a Fuel Economy Guide each year with information on most vehicles to help buyers determine the most fuel-efficient car that meets their needs. The 2011 issue includes not only traditionally fueled cars, but also hybrids, diesel, fuel cell, and other alternative fuel sources. The Library keeps a copy at the reference desk, and it is also available online at www.fueleconomy.gov . In a brief article from the Nov. 7, 2010 Chicago Tribune, author Kevin Quinn listed five iTunes apps that appeal to the eco-friendly teen. One of the apps is Pollution, which allows you to see your town’s carbon footprint. Another is called GoodGuide, enabling shoppers to look for eco-friendly products. A third, My Water Diary, helps you record your weekly water consumption and modify your behavior accordingly. According to Mr. Quinn, they are free and available via iTunes.com. 16250 Wausau Avenue South Holland, IL 60473 Phone: (708) 331-5262 Fax: (708) 331-6557 Your library is always open @ www.southhollandlibrary.org Library Receives Quilt From Heritage Quilters Guild In honor of our 50th Anniversary, several members of the Heritage Quilters Guild proudly presented a very special gift to the library.
