It has been a busy three months since our last edition. Highlights have included the first Discipline of Paediatrics Research Forum which was held on 22nd May on the topic of Adolescent Health. I would like to thank all eleven speakers who so generously donated their time to discuss their research interests. What particularly struck me was how much work on adolescent research is being undertaken close to Sydney Children’s Hospital and how much potential there is for research collaborations. We plan to hold other forums with different research themes in the future. Thanks to Sam and Sara for organising this superb event. The School of Women’s & Children’s Health Research Day at the Crown Plaza Coogee, was another opportunity to meet other potential collaborators within the School. The three minute presentations from Academics and Senior Conjoints were particularly valuable. The release of the Draft Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN) Research Strategy has reinforced my belief that our own strategic operational response to the External Review of Paediatrics carried out last August (still in the consultation phase) is aligned with that of the Network’s. This is important because not only is research and teaching in the Discipline important to the Hospital; the Hospital is integral to our research and teaching endeavours. Furthermore, having seen the report on the External Review of Medicine carried out late last year, I am confident that we are also strategically aligned with those recommendations. The SCHN’s Randwick Research Committee held its first meeting since re-commencing with new members. This Committee includes representatives from many paediatric sub-specialties including nursing, scientists and allied health, as well as a representative from CCIA. As A/Prof Kei Lui said at the conclusion of the meeting; ‘it’s nice to see a whole lot of new faces interested in research’. The first task of the new Committee is to finalise a new terms of reference which are likely to include the development and implementation of the paediatric research strategy on this site; stimulating research and encouraging new researchers; and measuring and reporting of key performance indicators. I am delighted to announce that Kylie-Ann Mallitt has been appointed as biostatistician and joined us on 11th June. She will be a great resource for all academics and conjoints of the School. More information on services Kylie-Ann is available to provide and how to access her will be circulated very soon. Finally, goodluck to all of those eagerly awaiting or already completing their NHMRC Response to Assessors and/or ARC Rejoinders. Submitting grants outside the GMO is not in accordance with the UNSW Delegations of Authority and it means that a range of compliance checking (including pricing) is not taking place prior to submission and can lead to difficulties with accepting the grant. All proposals for funding must be submitted to sponsors via:• the Grants Management Office for all grant applications:

[email protected]• the Research Partnerships Unit for

contract research and consulting projects: [email protected]

Additionally, grants that are not submitted via the GMO and are instead placed into the hospital system will only be able to be brought into UNSW via the GMO and in accordance with Procedure for Pricing Externally Funded Research and the UNSW Competitive Neutrality and Pricing Policy. If grants have been placed in the hospital system they must be administered and expended in the hospital system but going forward all grants must be administered via the GMO as outlined above.Above: Example of a Researcher Profile on the Gateway

BUPA Health Foundation FundingBUPA Health Foundation recently announced the recipients of their $2 million injection into Australian health research and implementation programs. UNSW was fortunate to receive a piece of the pie. Prof Jeffrey Braithwaite (AIHI) together with collaborators Prof Les White, Prof Adam Jaffe, and Prof Chris Cowell (SCHN), were awarded a $400,000 BUPA grant for the study titled ‘Care

Track Kids: The appropriateness of healthcare delivered to Australian Children’. This a great result, especially due to the competitiveness of the round and a success rate of 1.6%. This study is an Australian first, and will identify the appropriateness of healthcare delivered to children in Australia. Thousands of patients will be examined across 16 of the most common health conditions for children including juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes, and asthma. This project is a continuation of the 2012 study Care Track Australia which successfully demonstrated that there are large gaps in the provision of appropriate care to adults in 22 of the most common health conditions. Adopting an innovative and collaborative approach, health professionals will test novel interventions and ensure appropriate evidence-based care can be delivered. Researcher Profile: Dr Meredith WardProfile of a Physician Scientist in the Sydney Children’s Hospital Research Facility

Dr Meredith Ward, MBBS, FRACP is currently combining her clinical work as a Neonatologist in the Newborn Care Centre at the Royal Hospital for Women with a laboratory-

based PhD researching the role of neural stem cells in the response to and potential treatment of newborn brain injury.

In the newborn intensive care unit, Meredith cares for both full term and premature babies affected by brain injury incurred at or around the time of birth.

A common story, Meredith first developed an interest in laboratory research whilst an undergraduate medical student at the University of Sydney.

First she undertook a vacation research project and later worked as a laboratory assistant in the Physiology Department under the supervision of Professor David Cook.

After completing her specialist training in Paediatrics and neonatal intensive care, Meredith returned to the laboratory part-time to pursue her graduate studies in developmental neuroscience with Professor Anne Cunningham, FRACP, PhD in the School of Women’s and Children’s Health.

Meredith has successfully mastered the technical challenges associated with a laboratory bench project including the application of multiple-labelling fluorescent inmunohistochemistry and digital microscopy. This has allowed her to study hands-on the features and responses of endogenous neural stem cells in the embryonic and developing brain.

She has been supported during her studies by Pfizer, The Leslie Stevens Foundation and currently by the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Foundation for the project: “Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor: a potential neuroprotective therapy for perinatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.”

In addition, recently, she and her supervisor have developed a collaborative project with researchers from Pharmacology in the School of Medical Sciences, UNSW, using a model of neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.

Meredith is very hopeful that her research investigating ways of promoting recovery by harnessing the neural stem cells within a baby’s own brain, will offer new hope for the infants she treats experiencing these challenges in the future.

For almost 50 years the Kids Cancer Centre, headed by Professor Glenn Marshall, has been treating children with cancer and blood disorders at Sydney Children’s Hospital. In that time, the Centre has contributed greatly to increasing the

pool of knowledge both nationally and internationally on bone marrow transplantation, chemotherapy for relapsed solid tumours and leukaemia, invention of novel anti-cancer drug combinations and minimal residual disease testing in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Clinical and research staff of the Centre are recognised leaders in their respective fields and have been attributed with establishing new methods of outreach and home nursing and developing modern approaches to the bereaved family. The Kids Cancer Centre has seen survivorship rates of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) rise from 10% to almost 80% - ALL is the most common cancer the Centre treats. However, for the driven and passionate staff of the Kids Cancer Centre, this achievement is still not enough. For every child that walks through their doors, they strive to achieve a 100% cure rate – although they are getting closer, 1 in 4 children who are treated at the Centre will not survive the disease. The Kids Cancer Centre is a hybrid of multi-disciplinary research teams all with one goal in mind, changing the individual prognosis of every child in their care as well as improving outcomes for children, beyond survivorship. These outcomes encompass not only cure, but also discovery of new drugs and interventions supporting survivors both medically and psychosocially. The Kids Cancer Centre (KCC) is a great example of achieving success through collaboration with other centres, institutes, and Universities. The Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) who is a major partner of the Kids Cancer Centre and was actually founded by parents and clinical staff from the KCC more than 30 years ago.As well as the CCIA, the KCC is also a member of the Kids Cancer Alliance which was formed by a KCC-lead Cancer Institute of NSW grant. The Alliance is a network of the three child cancer centres in NSW - Sydney Children’s Hospital, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, and the John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. These hospitals are also joined by the three laboratory research institutes - the CCIA, the Children’s Medical Research Institute, and the Kids Research Institute. The latter two, work on child cancer as well as other priority areas. The Kids Cancer Alliance is also strongly supported by

University partners - UNSW and the University of Sydney.More information on the Kids Cancer Centre can be found in their publication Improving Outcomes for Children: Care, Research Cure - Kids Cancer Centre, Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick 2006-2012 Report.More information on the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia can be found online: http://www.ccia.org.au/index.cfmMore information on the Kids Cancer Alliance can be found online:http://www.cancerinstitute.org.au/research-grants-and-funding/translational-cancer-research-centres/the-kids-cancer-alliance

The LancetProf Glenn Marshall

We were delighted to read the profile on Professor Glenn Marshall in The Lancet late last month. Prof Marshall is the Director of the Kids Cancer Centre (KCC) and also the Head of Translational Research and Molecular Carcinogenesis at the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA).As the most famous and respected medical journal, Prof Marshall’s profile in the Lancet is indicative of the quality research being generated by his research team and the acclaim they are receiving not only in Australia but worldwide. The profile is a great read and traces the career of a self-proclaimed humanist and his journey from delivering clinical care to researching in the laboratory, long before it was the common term we hear today - “translational”.To read the article, follow the link below: http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736%2813%2961109-5/fulltextCCIA

It wasn’t only Prof Marshall who was profiled in The Lancet, CCIA also received their own mention as a whole with the work of Prof Marshall, together with Prof Michelle Haber and Prof Murray Norris. The World Report Profile highlights the changing climate of research funding and the adaptation of more collaborative research or “team science” as the Lancet terms it. As Prof Haber states in the article, the CCIA grew from a ‘lack of interest in child cancer drugs from big pharma,’ which

she attributes to child cancer being relatively rare and driven by genes that are often different to those in adult cancer. The article highlights the Institutes’ achievements so far in conjunction with the Kids Cancer Centre and the Kids Cancer Alliance and the challenges that remain as they work hard to eliminate cancer. To read the article, follow the link below: http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736%2813%2961107-1/fulltext

Researcher Profile: A/Prof Richard CohnA/Prof Richard Cohn is another of our highly-respected experts in child cancer. As leader of the Kids Cancer Centre‘s Brain Tumour Research Program together with co-leader Dr David Ziegler, Child Cancer Survivorship Team with co-leaders Karen Johnston and Dr Kristen Neville; and the Behavioural Sciences Unit with co-leader Dr Claire Wakefield - A/Prof Cohn is involved with interesting and non-traditional aspects of child cancer research.A/Prof Cohn’s research interests span investigating long-term sequelae of childhood cancer treatment, childhood brain tumours, improving hospital initiatives to better support patients and families from diagnosis to survivorship and bereavement; as well as the importance of psycho-social and behavioural aspects of paediatric cancer and translation into clinical practice.A/Prof Cohn was also at the forefront of the establishment of the Kids Cancer Alliance and is a Clinical Research Associate of CCIA.A/Prof Cohn’s research achievements were also documented in a high-profile article in Nature, last year. The article showed how Richard’s work in collaboration with St Jude Comprehensive Cancer Centre in the US, has identified genetic mutations in medulloblastoma - the most common paediatric malignant brain cancer.

According to Cohn, ‘the discovery of tumour-specific gene alterations linked to subtypes of medulloblastoma provides important insights into the development of the cancer and highlights targets for new treatment approaches.’To read the article, follow the link below: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v488/n7409/abs/nature11213.htmlRecent PublicationsDaniel, G., Wakefield, C.E., Ryan, B., Fleming, C.A.K., Levett, N., Cohn, R.J. Sydney Children’s Hospital Network HRECWe’ve had the pleasure of meeting Brooke McMahon and Clara Li who have recently been appointed as Ethics Officers for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network. Clara obtained her MBBS in 1990 in China, which was followed by five years surgical training. She then worked as an ENT Surgeon for five years before commencing her PhD study in the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. After completing her PhD, Clara worked as a researcher in the field of medical research at the University of Sydney for the past eight years. Brooke joins SCHN having worked for the last three years as an Ethics Specialist within industry – CRO, Quintiles. Prior to that, Brooke worked as a study coordinator and sessional lecturer for the University of Sydney and The Australian Catholic University teaching Ethics, Law and Exercise Science, Childhood Motor Development, Biomechanics and Exercise Psychology. Brooke’s primary area of interest is in neurophysiology after having worked in the Spinal Cord Injury Unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital as an Exercise Rehabilitation Physiologist. Brooke and Clara’s appointments come amongst a raft of changes to the SCHN HREC operations which we have faith will improve the turnaround time for NEAF’s and LNR’s. They join Jeff Wall who is the Associate Director of Research Operations, Catherine Berglund (Acting Research Ethics Executive Officer), and the Governance Team of Carolyn Casey and Asatina Viviani. Research conducted within Sydney Children’s Hospital and the wider Sydney Children’s Hospital Network should go through the Ethics and Governance Office, located at

Update: SCHN Ethics & Governancethe Kid’s Research Institute, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Support is available to assist you in completing your ethics and governance requirements.

• We urge you to make use of the Q&A Sessions that are held on site at the Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick (please see dates below) prior to the HREC Submission Dates.

• In addition to this, more support is available by using either the [email protected] or [email protected] email addresses.

• You can also contact the UNSW Research Coordinator – Samantha McFedries for advice and assistance with your applications.

Sam is more than happy to read through forms, protocols, and other additional information and provide intellectual input before you submit.. She can also point you in the right direction if you aren’t sure where to begin. Two tips for gaining a timely approval include first of all developing your research question – what is it you are setting out to do, what do you hope to achieve, what results are expected etc. Secondly, we can’t highlight the importance of submitting a research protocol together with your NEAF or LNR – there is a template available to help you if you aren’t familiar with compiling one. Protocols allow you to articulate your methods, recruitment, outcomes etc. in a more scientific and albeit natural way as opposed to the questions in the NEAF or LNR forms. Brooke and Clara bring a broad range of experience to the research ethics team, and we are looking forward to them making a meaningful contribution to the system of ethics at SCHN as part of the safeguards in place for the participant, researcher, institution and community. Brooke and Clara look forward to getting to know you all.

Event: Adolescent Health Research Forum

The first Discipline of Paediatrics Research Forum for 2013 was to say the least, a hit! Despite the wet Autumnal blast, we appreciated our speakers and audience braving the weather, I’m sure the appeal of a cosy night in was difficult to pass up. The topic for this research forum was adolescent health and our speakers covered a swathe of topics from kidney transplantation, cancer, adolescent gynaecology, public and population health, immunisation, chronic fatigue, HIV, drug-use, and schizophrenia. The underlying theme of the night was introducing Randwick to Randwick and stimulating collaboration with our neighbours including the Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Service, the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, the School of Psychiatry, the School of Psychology, the National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), and Neuroscience Research Australia (NEURA). The evening highlighted the research going on within our ol’ faithful Paeds champions – the Department of Nephrology, the Kids Cancer Centre’s Behavioural Sciences Unit, and the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases; and Obstetrics & Gynaecology our other Discipline making up the School of Women’s & Children’s Health. We were also pleased to have Albury-Wodonga and Coffs Harbour campuses of the Rural Clinical School join us by video-conference for part of the evening, and would like to invite them to do so more often along with their counterparts in Wagga Wagga and Port Macquarie. We would like to support the paediatricians at these campuses and other researchers and facilitate collaborations with Randwick as much as we can. We’ve all got a common goal of improving health outcomes for children and research output for UNSW and Sydney Children’s Hospital. It was clear that many of our neighbouring schools and UNSW centres / affiliates are involved with a large amount of adolescent research but in collaboration with other children’s hospitals outside of Randwick. Therefore our task is to look at opportunities for getting Sydney Children’s Hospital involved.Prof Adam Jaffe is already beginning to pave the way with this, having met with many of the heads of these schools / centres / institutes – which is all very exciting! Unfortunately we ran out of time for questions, so we invite anyone who was in the audience or unable to attend to either contact Sam ([email protected]) or the relevant speaker directly with your query. We would also appreciate any feedback on the Adolescent Health night, so we can improve what we are doing – again from the speakers, audience, and those who couldn’t attend. We will be holding another forum in a similar format in the coming months, and we would like to hear from those among you wanting to speak, or people you would like to nominate, as well as any ideas in general for this or subsequent forums will be greatly received.
