Padres go yard twice, but Cosart falters in finale By AJ Cassavell and Pat James / MLB.com

ATLANTA -- Following in the footsteps of Julio Teheran and Matt Wisler, Mike

Foltynewicz provided the Braves with another solid outing vs. the Padres on Thursday afternoon at

Turner Field, helping lead his team to a 9-6 win and its first sweep of San Diego since May 2008.

The Braves' offense provided plenty for Foltynewicz. After Freddie Freeman's two-run homer in the

third, Atlanta erupted for five runs in the fifth to knock Padres starterJarred Cosart out of the game after

allowing seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. No Padres starter was able to complete the fifth in the series.

"I just didn't have a good feel for anything today, felt kind of locked up, pitches weren't crisp," Cosart

said. "Mainly the offspeed pitches, [I] couldn't get them down in the zone."

The Padres were unable to get a runner on base through the first three innings, as Foltynewicz fanned

three while throwing just 29 pitches. Travis Jankowski had the first hit against the righty with a leadoff

single in the fourth, but he bounced back to record five straight flyouts.

Twelve of the 15 outs Foltynewicz recorded across six innings of work came in the air, but he also

allowed a solo shot to Hector Sanchez in the fifth and a two-run homer to Wil Myers in the following

inning.

"There were a couple bad pitches I left out over the zone, and you saw what happened there," Foltynewicz

said. "But other than that, my changeup was working real well for me today. My fastball didn't have the

life it usually does, but I got away with some stuff."

The Padres rallied for three runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough for a comeback. With the win,

Atlanta registered its first sweep at Turner Field this season.

"It has a lot of meaning," said Freeman about getting the sweep. "You want to win as many

games as you can. Obviously, we're not having the season we wanted to, but we're trying to end

strong. We've been doing that. We've been playing better baseball for the last couple of months,

and we welcome those sweeps."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Freeman on fire: After extending his on-base streak to 24 games with a walk in the first inning,

Freeman's homer two innings later marked his 10th during the streak. The first baseman has

Page 3: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

3

batted .361 (30-for-83) with 26 RBIs in that span, and his 34 extra-base hits since the beginning

of July lead the National League.

Wil power: It's been a rough second half for Myers, but before Thursday's game, the Padres'

All-Star first baseman spoke about his desire to "finish on a good note here in September." He

got off to the right kind of start, launching a two-run homer in the sixth -- his first long ball since

Aug. 13.

"I thought Wil turned the page in his third at-bat," said Padres manager Andy Green. "I thought

that was one of his better at-bats in a while. He really got in, competed and drove the ball out to

left field. Then in his next at-bat, he singled up the middle, so those were good things to see

from him."

Comeback complete: Twenty-five months after he last threw a pitch in the Majors, reliever Shae

Simmons returned to the mound for Atlanta for the first time since undergoing Tommy John

surgery 18 months ago. The right-hander entered the game in the top of the eighth and needed

only nine pitches to set the Padres down in order. His fastball sat between 96-97 mph, and a

contingent of his teammates greeted him at the dugout steps to congratulate him as he exited

the field.

"[Simmons] was good," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "He had been away for a while, and

when you get a guy like that, there's never the perfect time to put him in the game. But right

there was kind of as good as any, because we had six outs to cover and some guys who could

have backed him up if something went wrong. I thought he did great for not being out on a Major

League diamond for a while."

Tenth pitch is the charm: Sanchez -- who was called up Wednesday whenChristian

Bethancourt was placed on the disabled list -- wasted no time reacclimating himself with the

Padres. With two outs in the fifth, he won a 10-pitch battle against Foltynewicz by launching a

solo shot off the top of the right-field wall. In 200 Triple-A El Paso plate appearances, Sanchez

was batting .324/.392/.636.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS

• After scoring nine runs on Thursday, the Braves have scored at least seven runs in five

consecutive home games for the first time since Aug. 7-10, 1953.

• A Braves pitcher recorded a hit and came around to score in all three games this series. The

Padres have allowed a hit to the opposing pitcher in five consecutive games.

WHAT'S NEXT

Padres: The Friars travel to Los Angeles and will open a three-game series against the Dodgers

on Friday night. First pitch is slated for 7:10 PT. Clayton Richard will be looking to continue his

impressive return to the rotation, as the left-hander has allowed just two earned runs over his

three starts since returning to the Padres.

Braves: Atlanta opens a three-game series vs. the Phillies on Friday night in Philadelphia

with Joel De La Cruz on the mound. The 27-year-old rookie has seen his ERA rise from 3.41 to

4.66 over his past four starts and is still in pursuit of his first Major League win. This will mark

the right-hander's second start vs. the Phillies this year, as he allowed seven runs (four earned)

across six innings in an 8-2 loss on July 4. First pitch is set for 7:05 ET.

Green calling on Padres to 'run through the finish line' By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com

ATLANTA -- The baseball season is often compared to a marathon -- which fits nicely with Padres

manager Andy Green's demand for his players to "run through the finish line."

The Padres lost to the Braves, 9-6, on Thursday, and there's been some fatigue showing on an injury-

riddled and rookie-laden roster. But in Green's eyes, the final month of the season can serve as a crucial

learning experience for his young team.

"Playing through September is a new concept to them, and it can be very tiring, it can be very trying,"

Green said. "I want to see guys finish strong. I want to see us get better at the fine details of the game,

execute things that we know we can do well."

Until a late rally on Thursday, the Padres didn't execute many of those fine details, as they were swept by

the Braves in their final visit to Turner Field. Starter Jarred Cosart left a series of offspeed pitches up in

the zone and was roughed up, becoming the third starter in as many days to be removed before the fifth

inning was over.

Things may have turned out differently for him if shortstop Luis Sardinas hadn't taken his time

fielding a slow ground ball by opposing starter Mike Foltynewicz, who beat out a single, sparking

a five-run Braves rally.

After the play, Green had a chat with Sardinas in the dugout, with the goal of acknowledging the

youngster's mistake and learning from it.

"As the roster has turned over, you look at Sardinas," Green said. "He was not a part of our club

in Spring Training, not a part of our club until about a week ago. You want to introduce the way

you want to play, the style you want to play, the aggression you want to play with.

"That goes to everybody that shows up for the first time. That's something that guys learn from

as they get here and as they're here a little bit longer. In the middle of a season, it's a serious

adjustment."

On top of the turnover, the Padres' roster has been depleted by injuries this season, with 13

players currently on the disabled list. Those ailments have led to a suboptimal roster

construction. Several young players -- namely their all-rookie outfield of Travis Jankowski, Alex

Page 6: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

6

Dickerson and Jabari Blash (before his finger injury) -- were thrust into an everyday Major

League workload with no reprieve.

The Padres will get some help Friday, when utilityman Alexi Amarista (left hamstring strain)

returns from the disabled list.

"We've got a lot of guys here that are trying to establish themselves as Major Leaguers," Green

said before Thursday's game. "This is the opportunity to grind through another month of the

season."

Renfroe named PCL MVP

Outfielder Hunter Renfroe, the Padres' No. 3 prospect according to MLBPipeline, was voted the

Most Valuable Player of the Pacific Coast League on Thursday. He batted .306 with a league-

leading .559 slugging percentage and 29 homers, good enough for second in the PCL.

Renfroe joins the growing list of Padres Minor Leaguers to earn individual honors this season.

Lake Elsinore infielder Luis Urias took home Cal League MVP and Rookie of the Year honors,

while Carlos Asuaje was named the PCL Rookie of the Year on Wednesday.

"As an organization, we're really pleased with what those guys have done," Green said.

It's appears likely that Renfroe, Asuaje and a few youngsters will be called up once El Paso's

playoff run comes to an end. The Chihuahuas clinched the Pacific Southern Division title on

Wednesday night.

Padres, TinCaps extend player development contract

The Padres and their Class A affiliate, the Fort Wayne TinCaps, announced an extension of

their player development contract through the 2018 season on Thursday.

The TinCaps have been affiliated with Padres in the Midwest League since 1999.

"We're truly thrilled to extend our partnership with the Padres," TinCaps President Mike Nutter

said in a statement. "In a lot of ways, we feel closer than ever to the great folks in San Diego,

and this relationship has been mutually beneficial to both of us."

Myers learning from grind of 1st full big league season Padres slugger within striking distance of 30-30 campaign By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com

ATLANTA -- In a clubhouse filled with rookies and other youngsters, Wil Myersserves as something of

a grizzled veteran by Padres standards.

Of course, that isn't exactly fair to the slugging 25-year-old first baseman, who has never played a full

season at the big league level -- until this year.

The grind of that Major League season could very well be catching up to Myers, who entered September

batting just .200 with a .327 slugging percentage since the All-Star Break. But Myers may have begun to

right the ship Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a homer in a 9-6 loss to the Braves. He now needs six homers

and six steals to become MLB's first 30-30 man in four seasons -- a tall task, but certainly possible.

"I'm just grinding through this right now; it's been a little tough," Myers said. "I couldn't be happier with

how things have gone so far this year. Obviously I have a lot to learn, but it's been a little different playing

this full season, because it's been so long since I have."

Even though Myers struggled mightily in August, the fact that he was on the field to do so can be viewed

as a positive. He played a total of 147 games over the past two seasons because of separate wrist injuries.

This year marks the first time Myers has stayed healthy into September since his American League

Rookie of the Year Award-winning 2013 campaign. But even then, he only played in 88 big league games

after being called up by the Rays in mid-June.

"It's definitely a learning experience," Myers said. "Everything that's happened so far this year has been --

but especially the second half."

Padres skipper Andy Green noted that Myers is feeling fine physically. But the mental burdens are

beginning to stack up.

Myers made his first All-Star team in July and didn't get a breather then. There have also been murmurs

of a potential contract extension for him (which wouldn't take place until after the season, but could be

affecting his psyche nonetheless).

Page 8: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

8

And on top of that, the Padres offense is relying on Myers more heavily than ever before, after Matt

Kemp and Melvin Upton Jr. were dealt at the Aug. 1 non-waiver Trade Deadline.

"Matt's gone, Melvin's gone, and the roster's kind of turned over," Green said. "Now you're not just

expected to produce a little bit in a side spot in the lineup; you're trying to anchor it. I think he's applied

some of that pressure to himself. He's trying to carry that. Pretty much everybody in the game who

becomes 'the guy' goes through that."

Of course, the mental effects of a full big league season aren't limited to Myers. The Padres' offense --

which routinely starts four or five rookies -- struggled in August after impressing in June and July. Green

has had conversations with his players, encouraging them to finish strong and telling them to "run through

the finish line" -- his new go-to catchphrase.

As the Padres enter September, that's Myers' goal, and he did his part Thursday.

"Not [playing a full season] for two years is the biggest thing," Myers said when asked about his slump.

"But you just learn from these types of things. This is only going to make me better for the future. Right

now, I've just got to keep grinding and finish on a good note here in September."

Richard tabbed for opener at Dodger Stadium By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

The Dodgers could be playing deep into October, but if you want to see 20-year-old Julio Urias start a

game, don't miss Friday's homestand opener against the Padres.

Urias is closing in on an unspecified innings limit with a career-high 108, and president of baseball

operations Andrew Friedman said once Urias goes to the bullpen, he'll probably stay there for the

remainder of the season as the club continues to treat his arm with kid gloves.

With a day off Thursday, the opener against the Padres will be the first with expanded rosters. In addition

to the announced callups of Luis Avilan, Louis Coleman, Josh Ravin and Austin Barnes, there is the

possibility the the Dodgers will recall outfielder Yasiel Puig, who has spent the month at Triple-A

Oklahoma City.

Clayton Richard takes the ball for San Diego, looking to build off a very strong return to the rotation. In

three starts since joining the Padres, he's allowed just two earned runs over 18 frames. Richard had spent

the first three months of the season as a reliever with the Cubs, but was released in July and signed with

San Diego during the first week of August.

"I always viewed myself as a starter," Richard said. "Clearly, when you're in a different situation, you

have to adapt to that and do what you can to try to succeed in that role. I knew I always wanted to [start]."

Things to know about this game

• After losing the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader to Colorado left-hander Tyler Anderson,

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted that opponents will continue to run lefties to the mound until the

Dodgers (16-18 vs. lefties) find a way to beat them. San Diego opens the series by starting left-hander

Richard.

• Alexi Amarista is slated to return to the Padres on Friday after missing a month because of a left

hamstring strain. The Padres will likely recall another bullpen arm before the series as well.

• Since being swept by the Dodgers in the season-opening three-game series, San Diego is 5-5 against Los

Angeles. After these three games, the clubs will play three more games in San Diego on Sept. 27-29.

Renfroe named MVP of Pacific Coast League Lauer is second, first-round pick to debut with Fort Wayne By Bill Center / San Diego Padres

The honors keep coming for Triple-A El Paso.

The morning after clinching the Pacific Coast League's Pacific South division title, the Chihuahuas

learned that right fielder Hunter Renfroe had been selected as the PCL's Most Valuable Player for the

2016 season. Renfroe, 24, ranked the Padres' third-best prospect by MLBPipeline.com, is hitting .306

with 34 doubles, five triples, 29 homers, 104 RBIs and 94 runs scored.

He leads the PCL in extra-base hits (68) and total bases (290); ranks second in homers, RBIs and hits

(159); is third in runs scored and slugging percentage (.558); tied for third in doubles, and is ninth in

batting average and OPS (.894). Renfroe also ranks among the PCL leaders in outfield assists.

Renfroe is the first El Paso player to be named the MVP of the PCL and the first Padres prospect to be

honored with the award since catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. in 1989.

Renfroe's MVP award is the latest in a series earned by Padres prospects. Renfroe, catcher Austin

Hedges, center fielder Manuel Margot and second baseman Carlos Asuaje were all named to the All-

PCL team. Asuaje was also named the PCL's Rookie of the Year.

Nineteen-year-old infielder Luis Urias was named the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year of

the California League. Right-handed closer Jason Jester made the Texas League post-season All-Star team

and Austin Allen is the catcher on the Midwest League postseason All-Star team.

In Thursday's action, Class A affiliates Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne each scored walk-off wins and

right-handed starter Kyle Lloyd led Double-A San Antonio to a 3-1 win at Midland while left-hander Eric

Lauer (the Padres' third, first-round pick in the Draft) pitched two scoreless innings in his debut with Fort

Wayne.

In moves Thursday, Lauer and right-handed starter Joey Lucchesi were promoted from short-season

single-A Tri-City to Fort Wayne; right-handed pitchers Will Stillman and Evan Miller were transferred

from Fort Wayne to Arizona rookie camp, and left-hander Ryan Buchter was recalled by the Padres from

El Paso as the Major League team's first September callup.

Padres battered again, swept by Braves By Dennis Lin | 11:59 a.m. Sept. 1, 2016 | Updated, 12:52 p.m.

ATLANTA — About 90 minutes before game time Thursday, Andy Green sat in the

visiting manager's office at Turner Field. It was the first morning of September, the

beginning of the final month of what has been a long and grueling season. The end

had moved into sight, yet 30 games still separated a young Padres club from the final

out of 2016.

"There are a lot of guys here that are trying to establish themselves as big-leaguers,"

Green said. "It’s the opportunity to grind through another month of the season. For a

lot of these guys, playing through September is a new concept to them. It can be very

tiring, it can be very trying. I want to see us finish strong. I want to see us get better at

the fine details of the game, execute things that we know we can do well and just

continue to compete on a daily basis."

Thursday's final result, a 9-6 loss, wasn't exactly what the first-year manager had in

mind. The lowly Atlanta Braves completed their first home sweep of the season,

having outscored the Padres, 24-10, over three games. After San Diego starting

pitchers received early hooks the previous two days, Jarred Cosart made it through

four innings but crumbled in the fifth.

The Padres scored on a home run from Hector Sanchez and another from Wil Myers,

but their offense, all or nothing, skewed toward the latter. After Sanchez's solo shot

halved the deficit in the top of the fifth, the Braves responded by turning the game

lopsided.Share

To be clear, the Padres helped. Cosart, who allowed a two-run homer to Freddie

Freeman in the third, faced Freeman again and walked him with the bases loaded.

Former Padres outfielder Matt Kemp followed with a two-run single. Green went to

the mound. Brad Hand took Cosart's place. Adam Rosales replaced Luis Sardinas at

shortstop.

Green later explained that Sardinas exited as part of a double switch, though he

would've liked to see Sardinas close more quickly on an infield single by Braves

pitcher Mike Foltynewicz.

Page 15: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

15

"That’s something we chatted about in the dugout, just having the internal clock to

understand that some of these pitchers at the major League level, just because they’re

pitchers doesn’t mean they can’t run down the line," Green said. "That play hurt. It

hurt in the sense that we walked the next guy, gave up a single through the six hole,

and then it turned into a five-run inning."

Another two-run single ensued, swelling the Braves' lead to 7-1. For the third time in

as many days, Atlanta had scored four or more runs in an inning.

Myers' homer, a two-run drive, arrived in the sixth. Foltynewicz finished with six

innings of three-run ball, the damage against him coming on two swings.

Cosart, who was forced from his last start by a blister, was tagged with seven runs

over 4 1/3 innings. He yielded five hits and three walks.

"My finger's fine," Cosart said. "I just didn't have a good feel for anything today, felt

kind of locked up, pitches weren't crisp. Mainly the off-speed pitches. Couldn't get

them down in the zone. ... I've got to execute better next game and figure out why I

wasn't getting through the target. I think the positive is it's a pretty simple fix."

Said Green: "If you look at his line up until the fifth, he was really clean. We make that

play to start off the fifth inning, maybe he settles in and continues to grind a little bit

better. But when a guy makes a mistake behind you or doesn’t make the play, pitcher’s

got to step up, execute the pitches."

The Padres scored three times in the ninth. Myers singled, Yangervis Solarte doubled

and Alex Dickerson tripled, all with no outs. Ryan Schimpf collected a sacrifice fly.

Sanchez notched a two-out single. The rally stopped there.

The Braves (51-83) had entered this series with the worst record in the majors. Three

games later, they occupy second-to-last place.

If the season ended Thursday afternoon, the Padres (55-78) would hold the third

overall pick in next June's draft.

Padres pleased by another title for El Paso By Dennis Lin | 9:43 a.m. Sept. 1, 2016 | Updated, 12:26 p.m.

ATLANTA — The Padres may be nearing the end of their 10th consecutive season

without a trip to the playoffs, but in one corner of the organization, beer cans cracked

in celebration Wednesday night.

Playing at home, Triple-A El Paso shut out Las Vegas and won the Pacific Coast

League's Southern Division title 20 minutes later when Salt Lake defeated

Albuquerque. The division championship is the second in as many years for the

Chihuahuas, who will host the Northern Division winner Wednesday.

El Paso's postseason berth will delay big-league call-ups for at least a couple of the

affiliate's players. The PCL's conference playoffs will run through Sept. 11, the

championship series is scheduled for Sept. 13-18, and the Gildan Triple-A National

Championship Championship Game, a winner-take-all showdown between the

champions of the PCL and the International League, will be played Sept. 20.

The Chihuahuas have the position-player talent to make a deep run. Four of the

Padres' top youngsters — catcher Austin Hedges, infielder Carlos Asuaje and

outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Manuel Margot — have been in the affiliate's lineup

since opening day. Through Wednesday, El Paso was leading the PCL in batting

average, home runs and slugging percentage.

"As an organization, we’re really pleased with what those guys have done down there,

what (manager) Rod (Barajas) and his group have done," Padres manager Andy Green

said Thursday. "(Pitching coach) Bronswell Patrick and (hitting coach) Morgan

Burkhart, those guys have done a tremendous job with those guys. Half their club’s

here right now, and they’re still winning their division."

On the first day of roster expansion at the big-league level, the Padres made only one

move, officially recalling left-hander Ryan Buchter from El Paso. Infielder Alexi

Amarista, who's been sidelined by a hamstring starin, and a pitcher or two could join

the team Friday when it begins a series at Dodger Stadium.

Page 17: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

17

As for the Padres' best prospects in El Paso, Green and General Manager A.J. Preller

have often said they believe playoff experience, even if at the minor league level, can

aid in development. At least half of the aforementioned quartet could be called up

after the Chihuahuas' postseason ends.

Renfroe was named the 2016 PCL Most Valuable Player on Thursday. The 24-year-old

entered the day hitting .306 with 34 doubles, 29 home runs (second-most in Triple-A)

and 104 RBIs. He is the first Chihuahuas’ player to win an MVP award and the Padres'

first Triple-A player to win one since Sandy Alomar Jr. in 1989.

Renfroe, Hedges, Asuaje and Margot were all voted to the All-PCL Team earlier this

week, with Asuaje winning the league's Rookie of the Year award.

Winter ball talks

Winter ball is a possibility for more than a few Padres, though "nothing is concrete at

this point," Green said. "Still conversational. There’s a lot of our guys in Triple-A that

people are requesting to come play winter ball for them, which is good. They want

your players there, and it’s obviously an encouragement of this organization for a lot

of these guys to go play."

A number of players who have missed much of this season with injury could attempt

to make up for lost time by playing in games this offseason. One example is second

baseman Cory Spangenberg, out since April due to a quad strain and multiple

setbacks. Before he can head to a winter league, though, he'll have to verify his health.

"Cory Spangenberg will be through a program all the way through October with kind

of our instructional league where he’s making sure his quad’s good to go, so a lot of

what he’s able to do depends on his health," Green said. "We’re just going to build him

up and probably make a determination much later than right at the first of September

on whether he can play or not."

Rookie right-hander Cesar Vargas, shelved since May by elbow soreness, is another

whose health must be taken into consideration.

Page 18: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

18

"He should be full go on a throwing program at the end of the season here, ramped up

to where he would be able to play winter ball if he’s healthy enough to do it," Green

said. "As long as he’s healthy, we would love to see him go down there and pitch."

Goodbye to Turner Field

Thursday's series finale marked the Padres' last-ever game at Turner Field. Next

season, the Braves will move into brand-new SunTrust Park, about 12 miles northwest

of downtown, ending a 20-year run at Turner Field.Share

Green collected a few memories here during his playing career. He appeared in four

games here, starting one. He went 1-for-6 and scored a pair of runs.

"Couple rainouts, couple day-night doubleheaders here along the way — that's not

surprising," Green recalled. "Looking forward to the new ballpark. It should be an

exciting atmosphere. I know this year they haven’t had the fan support that they

typically do. It’s been kind of a rebuilding year for them, but it’ll be good to come to

the new ballpark."

According to multiple reports, the Padres will be the Braves’ opponent in the first

game at SunTrust Park, on April 13, 2017.

Notable

The Padres have completed their trade with the Mariners for infielder Luis

Sardinas, sending cash to Seattle.

The Padres announced Thursday that they renewed their contract with Low

Single-A Fort Wayne through 2018. The TinCaps have been a San Diego affiliate

since 1999.

Meet the unlikely San Diego star of new TV series 'Pitch' Fictional show on FOX about the first woman to pitch in Major League Baseball revolves around Padres By Bryce Miller | 9 a.m. Sept. 2, 2016

The star of a new FOX television series is ruggedly handsome, a silent type with a

trendy downtown address who loves hanging out by the water along San Diego Bay.

The blossoming celebrity, new to Hollywood’s tangle of glitz and glam, lacks the

baggage of an agent or IMDb.com page and never turns down requests for selfies —

still inviting friends to visit, no matter the mounting fame.

Will showbiz and the bright lights change Petco Park?

Nah. The stadium that’s home to the Padres and a central character in the show

“Pitch” acts like a flat-out natural. No makeup or stage direction needed. Never shows

up late; never butchers a line. Every moment on camera, a scene-stealer.

‘Pitch’ premier at Petco Park

The Padres will invite season ticket-holders to visit Petco’s Park at the Park on Sept. 20 for

a sneak peek of the FOX TV show “Pitch” before the team’s game against Arizona.

The following night, all fans in attendance can remain in the park after facing the

Diamondbacks to watch the pilot episode.

The show debuts nationally on Sept. 22.

Think casual confidence, not Kardashian.

The show based on a fictional player who becomes the first woman to start in Major

League Baseball history, set to debut Sept. 22, treats Petco like a member of the cast.

As a result, the park shares performance space with the Padres and San Diego as well.

Lights, camera … authenticity.

Page 22: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

22

“At one point the question was posed, if this deal doesn’t go through with Major

League Baseball, would you consider making it a fictional baseball team,” said Kevin

Falls, an executive producer and show runner. “The answer from (co-creator) Dan

Fogelman was a resounding, no.

“You can’t recreate the scale and, if it was a generic stadium, the San Diego Palm

Trees or San Diego Surfboards or something, it would take you out of it quickly and

the show would die a quick death.

“Now we get Petco, we get the Padres uniforms. It’s fantastic.”

The pilot about make-believe pitcher Ginny Baker, played by actress and former

multi-sport athlete Kylie Bunbury, burns through all of 26 seconds before showing a

sweeping view of Petco from a neighboring hotel room.

Now, the city will find out if its pre-teen baseball star inserts the Western Metal

Supply Co. building into coast-to-coast vocabularies. History is being made,

regardless of how long the series sails.

“It’s a chance for us to do a lot of really cool things — showcase Petco Park and do a

show that’s going to resonate with young women and families,” said Peter Seidler, the

Padres managing partner and largest shareholder. “One of our goals is to be as

inclusive as possible and have as diverse a fan base as possible.

“It’s designed to expand baseball’s demographics, not just for the meat-and-potatoes

baseball audiences. So this is right up our alley.”

The relationship with San Diego has the potential to be unique from almost all other

TV or movie projects. Rather than one long period of shooting before the cameras

vanish into L.A. studio lots, the cast and crew could return to Petco year after year if

the series builds steam.

Those involved in the project already are discerning what sets the city apart — in ways

big and bark.

Page 23: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

23

“The thing I love about San Diego, there’s a lot of dogs,” said Bunbury, laughing. “It’s

just more laidback than Los Angeles. I really enjoy it down here. The people are

wonderful. The food is great. I love that you get to walk around, too. You don’t get to

do that in Los Angeles.”

Show’s mission: Baseball believability

Cameras swarmed Petco on Wednesday as 400 extras provided the cheer-and-boo

soundtrack for scenes.

The shooting will feed an upcoming episode where Baker becomes involved in a bean-

ball fracas with some fictional St. Louis Cardinals. Between scenes, all involved

discussed how critical it is for Bunbury to harness believability as a woman facing big-

league hitters.

If viewers remain skeptical multiple episodes into the series, the core concept will

unravel.

The show needs you to believe Baker could pitch in the big-leagues. You will struggle

with this concept, at least initially. The show, its creators, producers and actors know

it. The pilot episode tests and prods its own premise constantly.

Baker struggles. A lot. There’s no quick, Disney-fied resolution waiting in the wings.

She relies on a quirky pitch — a screwball, in much the way low-velocity pitchers like

Charlie Hough and Tim Wakefield crafted MLB opportunities with knuckleballs.

The focus for viewers shifts surprisingly fast from believability about the character’s

ability to pitch to what the discussions and conflict would feel like in the clubhouse —

and out.

In one scene, the “owner” of the Padres meets the character Baker in a Petco hallway,

telling her teammates are eager to meet her.

“No, they’re not,” Baker says. “Ticketing and sales people, they’re excited. My

teammates, 75 percent think I’m the next San Diego Chicken. The other 25 just want

to see me shower.”

Page 24: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

24

The goal is for the concept of a woman pitching to ring true, or true enough, so

storylines can peel the onion of the thorny issues that follow.

“It’s an interesting thing to think about,” said Paris Barclay, an executive producer

and director. “Could (former Little League World Series star) Mo’ne Davis come in

and win some games? Is that possible? How long it be before there’s somebody in that

place where they take a chance?

“We thought (the screwball) might take some of the stink off the fact that she was

never going to have the heat. If it’s more finesse, then we hope you’ll buy it and it

passes the smell test.”

Full-body workouts and boxing fill three days a week for Bunbury, a former

basketball, soccer and track athlete. The 27-year-old throws as much as time and

smart arm management allow.

“Pitchers work their entire life to master it, so I really had to learn the mechanics

properly,” she said. “It was a stage by stage thing. I tried to look at it more as a

dance.”

Then, Bunbury begins talking the language of a seasoned pitcher.

“Now, I’m trying to find my sweet spot as far as my (arm) slot,” she said. I’m doing

some long-tossing to get my arm strength up and a lot of flat-ground pitching. I’m

definitely getting stronger.”

Part of that learning is credited to Gregg Olson, a 14-year MLB pitcher and 1989 A.L.

Rookie of the Year with Baltimore.

“She’s also like a Major League pitcher in that, if she’s not throwing the ball where she

wants to throw it, she gets frustrated,” said Olson, who worked as an advance scout

for the Padres from 2009-12. “It’s fun to see that competitive part.

“She’s an actress, so there’s not enough time in the day to go through all the

mannerisms a guy would be doing. But her mechanics are solid and she’s a good

athlete.”

The believability mandate extends beyond Bunbury.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, known by a generation for his role as Zach in the campy “Saved

by the Bell” before growing into recurring roles in “NYPD Blue” and “CSI: Crime

Scene Investigation,” put on more than 10 pounds and a Derek Norris-esque beard for

the role of Padres catcher Mike Lawson.

Others around the project say it was more like 20 pounds.

“I had about a month and a half to gain substantial weight and I ate like (crap),”

Gosselaar said. “After the pilot, I felt things moving (holding stomach) that shouldn’t

have been moving while I was running. I had to go on a diet that gained mass, but not

all fat.

“But it feels great to be a Padre — until you into the real Padres. You walk around with

your chest puffed up and you see a real guy, the guys who are here rehabbing, and

your chest doesn’t puff up as much anymore.”

Hollywood explores San Diego

Those in front of the cameras and behind them slowly are learning about the San

Diego that exists outside of Petco’s walls.

“We’ve become a Padre family, I guess you’d say,” Gosselaar said. “We follow the

Padres. My son (one of his two) now has a team he kind of can root for. We were sort

of soft Dodgers fans and Angels fans. Living in L.A., there’s not that one team that you

root for.

“Since we started filming and dad is a (using hands to make air quotes) ‘Padre,’ my

son has become a Padre fan now.”

The make-believe catcher recalled a unique conversation with a real Padres players —

at the time.

“I did run into (Matt) Kemp before he was traded and I told him that in the pilot, my

locker was his locker,” Gosselaar said. “He says, ‘That’s cool.’ Then he said, ‘You didn’t

touch anything, right?’ ”

Page 26: Padres Press Clips 09.02 - MLB.commlb.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 5 › 2 › 199327252 › Padres_Press_Clip…2016/09/02  · Minors: Chris Baker sends TinCaps to win UT San

26

Tony Bill, who was born in San Diego and grew up in Point Loma, is also one of the

show’s executive producers.

Bill, who won an Oscar for Best Picture as a producer for “The Sting,” said the project

provided a chance to reconnect with his hometown. Baker’s North Carolina “home” is

really a house in Point Loma, blocks from where Bill ran around as a kid.

“It was right down the street — a walk, not even a bicycle ride,” Bill said. “And I grew

up sailing in San Diego. The San Diego Yacht Club was kind of my home away from

home. It’s been 50 years since I’ve spent a lot of time there. So seeing Point Loma and

walking downtown, it’s a lot of fun.”

Thoughts of attending Padres games as a kid remain fresh.

“I have really fond memories of going to games then,” Bill said. “When the park was in

Mission Valley, it was really just a valley. We’d go hunting out there. I never thought

I’d get to go home to work like this, so it’s great.”

Gosselaar said his family rented a place in Ocean Beach for a week to become full-

blown tourists, visiting the zoo, museums and the beach.

The main attraction, though, continues to be his on-camera colleague.

“I’m a huge fan of Petco,” he said. “My wife and I have come to games. We take the

train. It’s an easy trip for us. The kids love it. I’m always amazed by how good the food

is and good the drinks are. You have sushi, you have tacos, you have barbeque, you

have craft beers and wine.

“For my wife and I, it’s a great date night. This is a spectacular park.”

And it might just become a star.

Padres-Dodgers preview. LOS ANGELES -- The National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgersopen a three-game series Friday against the visiting San Diego Padres as they attempt to keep the San Francisco Giants at bay heading into the stretch run.

The Dodgers (74-59) hold a two-game lead over the Giants (72-60), who dropped a 5-4 decision to the Chicago Cubs to open a four-game set on Thursday. The Dodgers, who begin a six-game homestand, were off Thursday.

Despite numerous injuries, Los Angeles has ridden its core of young players to remain in first place.

Shortstop Corey Seager (.315, 23 home runs and 62 RBIs), who is the likely leader for NL Rookie of the Year honors, has been one of the club's top performers. However, rookie outfielder Andrew Toles shined Wednesday, drilling a go-ahead grand slam in a 10-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies and preventing Los Angeles from being on the wrong end of a three-game sweep.

Rookie Julio Urias (5-2, 3.71 ERA) will vie for his fifth straight decision as he faces the Padres for the first time in the series opener. The 20-year-old Urias has been solid since the All-Star break, posting a 4-0 mark with a 2.03 ERA in his last six games (four starts).

"I think the thing that's stood out to me the most with Julio has been his composure," said Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers president of baseball operations. "We saw it early on. It's one of those things we thought we knew coming into the year but you don't really know it until someone competes at the major-league level and goes through the inevitable ups and downs.

"Just watching how he processed some of his hardships early on and the aptitude that he showed in his side work with (pitching coach Rick Honeycutt) and taking it into the game and watching how he competes inning to inning and start to start has been something."

In his last start in a win over the Cubs on Saturday, Urias allowed a run on six hits and tied a season-high with eight punch-outs in six innings.

Clayton Richard (1-3, 3.51 ERA) will oppose Urias in a matchup of southpaws. Richard, who the Padres re-signed after being released by the Cubs in August, is 1-2 with a 1.40 ERA in three starts (five games) with San Diego.

Richard worked seven scoreless innings and scattered eight hits against Miami last Saturday. One of his losses though occurred in relief for the Cubs against the Dodgers on May 31 when he surrendered two runs on three hits and failed to retire a batter.

Richard has a 6-4 record with a 3.84 ERA in 18 career games (16 starts) for San Diego against Los Angeles.

The Padres (55-78), who reside in last in the West, were handed a three-game sweep Thursday by the Atlanta Braves. A strong September would help soothe another painful campaign, manager Andy Green said.

"I want to see guys finish strong," Green told MLB.com. "I want to see us get better at the fine details of the game, execute things that we know we can do well."

Padres Prospect Earns MVP Award Hunter Renfroe named best player in the PCL

By Derek Togerson During the 2016 MLB Futures Game at Petco Park, Padres prospect Hunter Renfroe said he wasn't sure how much more he had to prove playing in the Pacific Coast League. He was leading the PCL in home runs and RBI at the time and was threatening to make a run at the triple crown. Padres fans have debated for a while now whether or not the slugging outfielder should be in the Major Leagues by now. On Thursday those thinking he should already be patrolling right field in the East Village in stead of El Paso got a little more fuel for their argument. Renfroe was named the Pacific Coast League's Most Valuable Player. The last Padres prospect to win that award was catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. back in 1989. In 128 games Renfroe leads all of Triple-A baseball with 68 extra-base hits and 290 total bases. He's second in Triple-A with 29 home runs and 104 RBI. A first round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, Renfroe is having easily the best year of his professional career with the Chihuahuas. But, even though the Padres can now expand their roster to 40 players, his arrival with the big league club is still on hold. El Paso is on the brink of a playoff berth and the Padres have said they want their top prospects (Renfroe, OF Manuel Margo, IF Carlos Asuaje and C Austin Hedges) to stay there and get post-season experience.

Braves complete 1st home sweep this season, beat Padres 9-6 2:12 PM PT Associated Press ATLANTA -- In a largely forgettable season, the Atlanta Braves finally have reason to gloat a bit. They swept a three-game series at Turner Field for the first time this year.

And, get this: They've scored at least seven runs in five straight home games -- the first time that's happened since 1953.

Freddie Freeman homered and the Braves broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, beating the San Diego Padres 9-6 on Thursday. "We're not having the kind of season we wanted to," Freeman said. "But we want to finish strong."

One day after Minnesota dipped below Atlanta to the worst record in the majors, the Braves kept on winning behind a six solid innings from Mike Foltynewicz (8-5) and another strong showing from the offense. It was the first time they've had five consecutive home games with at least seven runs since Aug. 7-10, 1953, the team's debut season in Milwaukee.

"We don't want the worst record in baseball," Freeman said. "We're trying to take care of business in September so we don't have that."

The slugging first baseman put Atlanta up in the third with his 28th homer, a two-run liner into the right-field seats off Jarred Cosart (0-2). After Hector Sanchez homered for the Padres in the fifth, the Braves finished off Cosart in the bottom half. Freeman walked with the bases loaded, followed by two-run singles from both Matt Kemp and Anthony Recker. The Braves' two previous three-game sweeps this season came on the road. They're still just 22-44 at the Ted, but feeling a lot better about the way they've played since the All-Star break.

Atlanta has won 20 of its last 45 games.

"We're not looking at the big picture," interim manager Brian Snitker said. "We're just trying to put our best foot forward every day."

Foltynewicz won his fourth straight decision over six starts. He went six innings, yielding just four hits though he did get touched for a pair of homers. Wil Myers went deep in the sixth, lofting a two-run shot just inside the left-field pole. It wasn't enough to keep the Padres from their seventh loss in the last nine games.

Cosart lasted only 4 1/3 innings, charged with seven runs on five hits and three walks.

The Padres scored three runs in the ninth off Chaz Roe before Jim Johnson came on to get the final out for his 14th save. PITCHING PLANS

The Braves plan to start right-hander John Gant on Saturday in Philadelphia. Aaron Blair was initially scheduled to go, but the struggling rookie (0-6, 8.23 ERA) has been dropped from the rotation. NEW FACES

Both teams made some minor changes on the first day of expanded rosters.

The Braves reinstated right-handed reliever Chris Withrow and catcher A.J. Piersynski from the 15-day disabled list, and also called up left-hander Jeb Bradley from Triple-A Gwinnett. The 26-year-old Bradley was acquired from Milwaukee in June and has never pitched in the majors. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred injured pitcher Eric O'Flaherty to the 60-day disabled list. San Diego, meanwhile, called up left-hander Ryan Buchter from Triple-A El Paso of the Pacific Coast League. He has spent most of the season with the Padres, going 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 58 games before being sent out Aug. 20 for a brief stint in the minors. UP NEXT

Padres: LHP Clayton Richard(1-3, 3.51) gets the nod Friday as the Padres begin a three-game series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. The 32-year-old will be making his fourth start since signing with the Padres. He has not allowed an earned run in 14 consecutive innings. Braves: RHP Joel De La Cruz will again be seeking his first big league win when he starts the opener of a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 27-year-old is 0-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 15 games -- including eight starts -- since being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett. He 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA in three appearances vs. the Phillies.
