Dear Friends,
In Isaiah 43:1 it is written:
“But now, thus says the LORD,Who created you, O Jacob, and formed you, O Israel:Fear not, for I have redeemed you;I have called you by name: you are mine.”
A name identifies and distinguishes each one of us from another person. Our name is solely ours and makesus unique. Our parents chose it at birth and we were baptized into our faith and became a child of God withthat very special name. We may bear the name of a Saint, a parent or that of a favorite relative. Or ourname may identify our heritage. One of the first things we were taught when we were old enough to hold apencil in our tiny hands was to print our name. We respond when our name is called out and delight inhearing a greeting by name from a friend or someone we don’t know very well. We make a connection.
If you were here at Padre Serra when our parish started you may remember that we began by wearingnametags in church, at meetings and at all parish gatherings. Before long everyone knew each other’s nameand we had this wonderful feeling of “community.”
We have really grown as a church community since then and we are very fortunate that many new familieshave joined our congregation. There are a lot of new faces amongst us. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all knewthe names of those who sit beside us when we pray in church every week? We would have a greater senseof community and belonging and no one would feel like a stranger.
In his metaphor of the Shepherd, Jesus says in John 10:3: “The gatekeeper opens (the gate) for (theshepherd), and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”
During Lent, starting on the first weekend in March, we invite you to join us in wearing a nametag to Masson that weekend. We will wear them to all four Masses. We will also wear them again on the weekends ofMarch 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25. Beginning in April we will continue to wear them to all four Masses onlyon the first weekend of the month, i.e. the first weekend of April, the first weekend of May, etc.
Tables will be set up in the courtyard on the dates indicated above and nametags will be available to you. Please PRINT your FIRST name only in large font. Wear the nametag high on your right shoulder so thatit is easily visible. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to pick up your nametag before Mass starts.
We look forward to calling each other by name …

Today is Commitment Sunday for this Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. You are asked to reflect on Ms. Wayek’s message and the printedmaterial in today’s bulletin. PSP ~ Respect Life Ministry“Ending the death penalty would be one important step awayfrom a culture of death and toward building a culture of life.”United States Catholic Bishops, 2005
Catholic teaching on human life is rooted in the belief that all lifeis a gift from God that must be respected and defended fromconception to natural death. In his encyclical The Gospel of Life, the Holy Father challenges followers of Christ to be“unconditionally pro life”. He reminds us that “… the dignity ofhuman life must never be taken away, even in the case of someonewho has done great evil.” Modern society has the means ofprotecting itself, without definitively denying criminals the chanceto reform” (Gospel of Life, 27).
The SAFE California Act will replace California’s death penaltywith a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole as themaximum punishment for murder. Signatures are being collectedright now for this initiative to be placed on the November electionballot.
