    Horsegram/Kollu/Ulavalu/Hurali/Kulith

    Horse gramspr out - 1 1/ 2 cup

    Oni on - 2 l arge Chopped f i neTomat o - 2 chopped f i ne

    Gi nger garl i c paste - 1 tbsp

    Chi l l i powder - 1 t bsp

    Cor i ander powder - 1 tbsp

    Garam masal a powder - 3/ 4 tbsp

    Turmer i c powder - 1/ 4 t sp

    Cumi n seeds - 1 tsp

    Curr y l eaves

    Mustar d seeds and urad dhal - 1 t sp

    Sal t as needed

    Oi l - 2 tbsp

    As a vari ati on can add 1 cup of mi l k OR gri nd coconut wi th f ennel seeds to a f i ne paste.

    Thi s wi l l gi ve a good t hi ckness and ext ra t ast e t o t he gravy.

    Soak 1 cup of hors egram over ni ght and then dr ai n water and cover wi t h a wet cl oth and

    all ow themt o sprout.

    Transf er t hem i n a press ure cooker pan and add water enough f or f i l l i ng t hemand cook f or 3

    - 4 whi st l es. Normal l y for t he other sprouts t here i s no need to pressure cook, but hor se

    gramt akes l onger t i me to cook and al so t he sprouts.

    Heat oi l i n a pan and add mustar d seeds, urad dhal , cumi n seeds and curr y l eaves. Wai t

    unt i l i t pops out and add chopped oni ons. Fry t i l l gol den brown. Next add gi nger gar l i c

    paste and saut e f or a mi nut e. Then add chopped t omatoes and cook ti l l t hey mashed and pul py

    and water l eaves out. Next add al l t he powders and mi x once. Fi nal l y add the cooked sprout s

    al ong wi t h the water and al so sal t and cook ti l l the gravy thi ckens. garni sh wi th chopped

    cori ander l eaves.

    Thi s goes wel l wi t h r i ce and al so chapathi s.

    As a kid I used to ask my Mom, why is it called horse gram...and tell myself that it's some what related to Horse power..the techie term.:-)

    The curry looks great and I lo ve the idea of grinding fennel and coconut, will make it v ery flavourful surely.

    Can add milk/coconut milk or coconut paste at the end after adding all the powders. For milk you can let it to cook until it comes to a boil and for

    coconut paste can cook for 10 -15 minutes in low/medium flame until raw smell leaves.
