Padma Bhushan Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya founded Somaiya Vidyavihar an education trust in 1959, to provide quality holistic education. It was founded on the belief that, education is an important pillar of nation building with the power to change lives, and that it is the duty of the privileged to help provide it to whoever aspires to be educated.

Somaiya Vidyavihar encompasses 34 institutions, with more than 39,000 students and 1,500 faculty. Its educational institutes are spread across two main campuses - a 50 acre complex in Vidyavihar and a 28 acre complex in Sion both located in the heart of Mumbai besides a number of smaller campuses across rural Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat. Currently we offer Degree, Diploma & Certificate courses at Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral levels. Somaiya Vidyavihar also runs a few autonomous Post-Graduate Courses, Vocational Training Courses and Schools.

Shri. K. J. Somaiya guided Somaiya Vidyavihar until 1999, his son Dr. S. K. Somaiya was at the helm of affairs till 2010. Today Shri. Samir Somaiya, a Cornel University and Harvard Business School alumnus is the President.

O ur Founder, Padma Bhushan Shri K. J. Somaiya founded Somaiya Vidyavihar on the 9th of September 1959. He later founded the Girivanvasi Pragati Mandal, The K. J. Somaiya Medical Trust, Girivanvasi Education Trust and sister institutions to make great citizens of India and the World. In the words of Swami Vivekananda, “We want that education by which character is formed, the strength of mind is increased, the intellect expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet." We have now grown into a multi-disciplinary and multi-campus education institution with over 1500 faculty, and 39,000 students.

Established in 1988, our Industrial Training Institute is one of

S ince its establishment in 1988, the K J Somaiya Private Industrial Training Institute has been one of the premier institutes, catalysing the skills landscape in India. It makes us very proud to say that we have provided industry-relevant skill training to over 5000 youth, enabling them in securing a better livelihood and a better chance to support themselves as well as their families.

The institute is located in the heart of Mumbai within a 50 acre, lush green campus of Somaiya Vidyavihar in Vidyavihar East. The laboratories and workshops are well equipped with the latest user friendly tools, equipment and machinery. The faculty are well qualified & highly motivated to impart the best training techniques. Wide range of books and other study materials are available in the library for our students.

The institute supports and has been continuously working towards fulfilling the mission of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Govt of India. K. J. Somaiya Vocational Training Institute, now called the as K. J. Somaiya Private Industrial Training Institute was established in 1988 to provide skill-based education and training to underprivileged students. Today we offer NCVT Affiliated and Autonomous Certificate Courses in trades like Plumbing, Welding, Electricals and Electronics, Computer Hardware and Network amongst others. A few years ago, vocational courses were thought to be for people who did not have the aptitude to study in a college and thus, needed skills in a particular field, to gain employment. This scenario, however, has completely changed today. These days, people have realized their importance and are opting for such courses, both online and offline, to gain skills related to a particular field so that their job prospects can improve.

K. J. Somaiya Private Industrial Training Institute started with a batch of 20 students and one autonomous program in the space of 150 square meters. Since then it has grown to a much larger institute housed in its own building measuring 1107 square meters and offering seven courses to more than 300 students.

Our students are trained in the different disciplines by trained and highly motivated teachers. Training periods range from six months to two years which includes both classroom lectures and hands on practical training in well-equipped laboratories. With the step by step instructions and actual hands-on experience received, our students develop the ability to work independently and can be placed for employment immediately after completion of training program. To make sure that the students soar high during their placements, we pay a lot of attention to the pre-placement talks and sessions which are focused on motivating the students to get the best out of their capabilities. Not only this, we also promote entrepreneurship and self-starting environment to the students and always motivate them towards innovation and development. The achievements of our alumni having made their mark in all walks of life are a testament of our commitment to the vision and mission of the Institute. Jayesh’s story is one which will reinstall our faith in the courage and determina-tion of today’s youth. Coming from a middle class background Jayesh N Mane passed the S.S.C. examination with 50% marks. While still in school, his family told him stories about ITI students learning different vocational skills and trades who are successful today. With similar dreams and to bolster his employment skills, he enrolled himself in the 2 years Electrician course at our institute and also passed the NCVT examination in October 2001 During his course not only did he get in-depth practical knowledge but was also able to get an electrician’s job soon after completion. Jayesh worked in the maintenance department of Steelage India till 2004 when he joined Hindustan Time as a Senior Executive taking care of electrical breakdowns and transformers for 2 and half years with a monthly salary of Rs 21,000/-. Armed with his hardwork and the technical skills as well as soft/life skills learnt while studying and at work, he was picked up by Sodarco Facility Man as an Assistant Manager at a salary of Rs 100,000 per month. Presently working at Virtela India Pvt Ltd as Manager - Admin & Facilities Jayesh is economically independent and supporting his family with an annual salary of Rs 15 lakhs. Jayesh Mane is a proud alumnus of K J Somaiya Private Industrial Training Institute and visits us regularly .

Nilesh came from a middle class family from Mumbai. He passed his Secondary School Examination (SSC) from Dr. Shirodkar High School, Parel, he scored a mere 48% marks. Inspite of his low marks, Nilesh was determined to build a successful career and do well in life. That is when he came across an advertisement of our institute in a local newspaper and learnt about the different opportunities which would open up for him. He immediately sort admission in our institute with a view to learn something new as well as to build a secure future. Nilesh was trained at our institute for 12 months and with the help of our dedicated faculty he completed the autonomous course in Audio Video Servicing with flying colours. Through the campus placement cell he was placed at HCL as a technician at a modest salary, he worked hard at HCL and soon he joined Gebbs India Ltd as a hardware technician. He was also interested in computer hardware, an interest he had developed while still at the institute. With a dream of becoming an entrepreneur in the field of computers, he started his own computer service centre at Lamington Road. Today he is the proud proprietor of a computer hard disk repairing centre at Parel with more than 12 staff members working for him. His biggest achievement is bagging the service contract of Harman Kardon – JBL, world’s leading headphones and multimedia speakers company. Nilesh is economically independent with an annual income of Rs 8,00,000/- and is a role model for a number of our current students. We are all very proud of Nilesh Tupe and wish him more success in the future.
