ONE: General Standards for Specialty Diver Courses SPECIALTY DIVER COURSE INSTRUCTOR GUIDE

1- 1

OneGeneral Standardsfor Specialty DiverCourses

OVERVIEWThe purpose of the PADI Specialty Diver courses is to familiarize divers withthe skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques, prob-lems and hazards for various special-interest areas in diving.

The following are general standards that apply to all specialty divercourses.

All PADI Standards that apply to the regular PADI Specialty coursesapply to the Distinctive Specialty program.

Instructor QualificationsThe instructor conducting the specialty course is to be certified as a PADISpecialty Instructor for the particular specialty being taught. (See theGeneral Standards and Procedures section for further details.)

Note: All Teaching status PADI Assistant Instructors, Underwater Instructors andInstructors with a higher rating are authorized to conduct the Peak PerformanceBuoyancy, Project AWARE and AWARE - Coral Reef Conservation Specialty courseswhen using the standardized PADI Specialty Course outlines.

Conduct of Specialty CoursesCombining two or more specialty courses so that credit is received for morethan one rating during any training session of a course is not acceptable. *To ensure meaningful learning experiences, all specialty course training, including open water dives, is to restrict training to a single specialty topic. For example, when photos are taken on a wreck dive, the dive may not becredited toward both the Underwater Photographer and Wreck Diver ratings. Also, a deep dive of 18 to 40 metres/60 to 130 feet on a wreck may not becounted for both Deep Diver and Wreck Diver specialty ratings.

* Divers enrolled in a PADI Enriched Air Diver course may integrate enriched air training diveswith other specialty training dives. This exception is possible because enriched air trainingdives do not include specialized waterskills. Divers complete enriched air dive requirements onthe surface, then complete specialty dive requirements in the water and receive dive credit forboth the Enriched Air Diver course and appropriate specialty diver course.

Page 10: PADI - Instructor Guide - 27 Specialties.pdf

As listed in individual specialty course standards, select training divesmay be conducted at night. However, student divers participating in PADISpecialty Diver course dives conducted at night (other than for the PADI NightDiver course) must have previous night diving experience. Completing theNight Adventure Dive from the Adventures in Diving program or earning thePADI Night Diver specialty certification are ideal for gaining experience.

Adventures in Diving and Specialty Course CreditEach Adventure Dive from the PADI Adventures in Diving program serves as anintroduction to a specialty-diving topic. During the two courses, student divershave the opportunity to try various diving activities, and decide which specialtythey are interested in pursuing further. Each dive from the PADI Adventures inDiving program may be counted as the first dive of the related specialty.

Similarly, Dive 1 of a related specialty may be counted toward the PADIAdventures in Diving program.

Relationships between courses are done at the discretion of the instruc-tor conducting the particular specialty or advanced course. To ensure allperformance requirements are met, use of PADI’s standardized SpecialtyDiver Course Instructor Outlines is mandatory when a relationship is drawnbetween the PADI Adventures in Diving program and PADI Specialty Divercourses.

Note: PADI certified Specialty Divers wishing to return for certification as either anAdventure Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver should have the appropriate PADIAdventure Dive Training Record completed and signed for them by the original SpecialtyInstructor. Doing so will assist the Specialty Diver in receiving advanced training creditfor the first dive of their Specialty Diver Course. PADI Adventure Dive Training Recordsmay be found in PADI Dive Logs or in the Appendix of the “Adventures in Diving Pro-gram Instructor Guide.”

Qualifying Certifications1. PADI Open Water Diver. When referring to the PADI Open Water Diver

certification, a qualifying certification from another training organizationis defined as proof of an entry-level certification with a minimum of fourscuba training dives. The instructor is to insure that the individual canperform the skills required of an Open Water Diver.

2. PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. When referring to the PADI AdvancedOpen Water Diver certification, a qualifying certification from anothertraining organization is defined as proof of certification beyond entry-level with a minimum of 20 logged dives documenting experience in deepdiving and underwater navigation.

PreassessmentAs required per General Course Standards, the instructor is to screen andevaluate all student divers to insure they meet the required prerequisites.Specialty courses are to contain skills relevant to the specialty. Therefore, anyreviews of entry-level skills should be covered during the required screeningand evaluation process prior to accepting an individual for specialty training(the Skill Evaluation or the Scuba Review Program is an excellent means ofaccomplishing this review).

PADI SPECIALTY REFERRAL PROCEDURESReferral ProceduresThe purpose of this procedure is to allow a diver to complete PADI SpecialtyDiver Training with more than one PADI Specialty Instructor.A PADI Specialty student who has enrolled in and completed at least theknowledge development requirements for a PADI Specialty Diver course maybe referred to another PADI Instructor. This referral procedure may only beused when the PADI standardized course outline for the specialty course isused by each PADI Instructor involved with the training.

To refer a PADI Specialty student, use the PADI Specialty TrainingRecord Sheet for that particular specialty found in the Appendix of this guide, and in the PADI Adventure Log. These sheets, along with the student’s com-pleted Medical Statement may be given directly to the student to continuePADI Specialty Training with another PADI Specialty Instructor qualified toteach the specialty.

Prior to conducting a specialty dive for the referred student diver, the administrative requirements as outlined in PADI “General Standardsand Procedures” must be completed. The student diver must complete theLiability Release (Certificate of Understanding) and Assumption of RiskAgreement, and Standard Safe Diving Practice Statement of Understandingwith each instructor participating in the specialty referral training.

When you receive a specialty referral student, you may check thestatus of PADI Instructors previously signing off any specialty dives by callingyour PADI Office.

Step-By-Step Certification Procedures Summary1. Standardized PADI Specialty Outline must be used by all PADI Specialty

Instructors participating in the training.

2. The instructor who conducts the student diver’s final open water trainingis to be the certifying instructor. The instructor certifying the diver mustensure that all certification performance requirements have been met.

3. Use the PADI Specialty Training Record sheets to verify student divercompletion of Specialty diver course requirements.

4. Complete a PADI Specialty Training Documentation Worksheet. This isyour personal record of a student’s specialty training.

5. Complete a standard PADI PIC envelope and mail to your PADI Office tosecure the specialty certification card.

Twenty-SixDistinctive SpecialtyCourses

COURSE STANDARDS AND OVERVIEWCertification in specialty areas other than those detailed in the foregoingstandards is possible through the Distinctive Specialty program. Some topicareas require special training and should be sanctioned. Distinctive SpecialtyCourses allow the instructor to develop courses important to the particulararea or circumstances.

Instructors who wish to be certified to teach a Distinctive Specialtyshould see the General Standards and Procedures section for further details.

CERTIFICATION PROCEDURESThe certifying instructor obtains a Distinctive Specialty certification bysubmitting a completed, signed PIC to the appropriate PADI Office. An ap-proval to teach the Distinctive Specialty must be on file for the instructorsubmitting the certification, or the PIC will be rejected. If the PIC is ac-cepted, a certification card for the specialty will be issued. Diplomas with thespecialty topic typed in are available, but chevrons for these limited coursesare not available.

The instructor who conducts the student’s final open water trainingsession is to be the certifying instructor. The instructor certifying thestudent must insure that all certification requirements have been met. Distinctive Specialty certifications may be applied toward the spe-cialty rating required for the Master Scuba Diver rating.
