Will to Win: Padel Tennis Partnership Project

Background: Padel is cited as the fastest growing racket sport in the World with Spain leading the way with over 23,000 courts in existence, compared to only 40 in the United Kingdom. As of May 2019, the Lawn Tennis Association has partnered with British Padel to further the development of both racquet sports. The future has never looked brighter for padel in Britain.

i. Padel is a doubles fun family game and is seen as an introduction to tennis, which can be seen to be a technical and difficult sport to learn initially.

ii. Padel (a European game – 30 courts in London, 23,000 courts in Spain) will create agreat atmosphere and community family sports destination.

iii. Padel is easy, social and simple to play at all ages.

Opportunity: Land is at a premium in London and at many of our sites there would be no additional space to build more tennis courts, which were at 100% occupancy at peak times (Hyde and Regent’s).

The Padel court is just over ½ the size of a tennis court, and the revenue almost 4 times that of a tennis court.

Padel has diversified the user groups at the centres with a strong increase in female participants as well as those from more varied backgrounds.

The reality: Hyde and Regent’s Park case study 1. 2 courts built in 20182. Sales figures were over target and occupancy 100% at peak times3. We run a Padel league with over 100 participants4. Our padel league has two committed sponsors5. 2 more courts given the go ahead: 1 at Hyde and 1 at Regent’s6. We now have qualified padel coaches working with us as well as weekly sessions

The way forward/ opportunities: 1. To develop junior padel alongside junior tennis2. To encourage beginners to take up the sport3. To develop the link between padel and tennis4. To build upon British Tennis’ newly formed partnership with British Padel5. Sir Andy Murray has publicly and financially backed the sport of Padel

Padel Events

Will to Win hosted the first ever public Park Padel tournament in August 2018 at Hyde Park. The demand exceeded our expectations with over 50 eager Padel players attending, which shows how huge the demand is for Padel in London.

1. Since the inaugural event, we have two dedicated Whatsapp community groups totaling over 250players.

2. Will to Win runs a newly formed Doubles Padel League that has 100 competitors taking part in a boxleague. This league has gained two sponsors.

3. We run weekly sessions that are run by qualified padel coaches.

4. Will to Win Regent’s Park is hosting an official British Padel Tour tournament the weekend of 15/16th

June 2019.
