Introduction

About this guideUse this Site Planning Guide to learn about and prepare for the installation of your 3M™ Pad Staff Workstation Model 895. This guide contains:

• A brief system description

• Equipment specifications and requirements

• Site planning considerations

• Pre-installation information

About the 3M™ Pad Staff Workstation Model 895The Pad Staff Workstation is intended for use by library staff in check-in/checkout of library materials. Library items that use optical barcode technology can be converted to RFID technology using the Pad Staff Workstation in conjunction with a barcode scanner supplied by the customer. The Pad Staff Workstation includes software programs that enable the user to perform the above functions using RFID tags.

• Designed for use with a customer-supplied computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, barcode scanner (optional) and CF (CompactFlash®) card reader (optional), the Model 895 includes a 3M RFID Reader Model 810, 3M RFID Pad Model P12, and 3M conversion and workstation software.

• The system is designed for installation in customer-supplied furniture, and must be installed as specified in this guide.

• The system is intended for use in an indoor library environment and has not been evaluated for other uses or locations.

System placement guidelines

Workflow considerations• Where will the Pad Staff

Workstation be located (back room, behind front desk, other)? The system should be located in an area where items being processed can be easily moved. You may want to consider space for wheeled carts or other carrying devices.

• What tasks will be performed by the system (barcode scanning, RFID conversion)? The system should be located in or near the area where it will be most needed, such as a back room used for RFID conversion.

• How are items received for processing, and where are the items placed after processing? You may need extra storage or counter space for items being processed.

Space considerations• Is there enough space to process and store items (room for carts, stacks of books, etc.)?

• Is there enough room so the computer monitor can be viewed during printing?

• Is there enough room so the computer’s keyboard and mouse will not interfere with scanning and printing?

Staff preferences and ergonomic considerations• Does the system location minimize repetitive motion?

• Does the system location allow staff members of varying height to work efficiently?

• Does the system location allow for access by handicapped staff members?

• How much space is required to work comfortably?

RFID pad placementThe RFID pad is typically placed on a flat, non-metallic surface in a convenient location near the computer. The pad also can be mounted beneath a desktop or counter with the kit provided for that purpose. (See Preparing to mount RFID pad beneath counter following this topic.)

For best performance, make sure that the RFID pad is at least 2 inches (5 cm) away from any metal surface. Since the RFID reader is enclosed in a metal case, also make sure that the reader is located at least 2 inches from the pad.

Some desks or countertops may have metal parts beneath the surface. If necessary, the RFID pad can be as close as 1 inch (2.5 cm) from a metal surface, but this will reduce the RFID pad’s read range.

Place the RFID pad close enough to the system computer so users can hear and see computer-generated audible and visual cues.

RFID reader placementThe RFID reader can be placed in any location that meets the environmental requirements listed in the equipment specifications.

Cable lengths — RFID reader and pad• Coaxial cable — RFID pad to reader, 6.67 ft. (2 m)

• USB cable — RFID reader to computer, 6.67 ft. (2 m)

• Power supply cable — RFID reader to power transformer, 6.67 ft. (2 m)

• AC power cord — Power transformer to AC power, 9.8 ft. (3 m)

Preparing to mount RFID pad beneath counter (optional)

Description

The 3M RFID pad can be mounted to the underside of a desk or counter using the mounting kit (included). This option requires that you drill mounting and access holes before a 3M technician is called to install the system. The following information will help you prepare the underside of the work surface for this option:

Note:The 3M RFID pad can reliably read RFID tags up to 8 inches away, whether the pad is installed on top of or beneath a work surface. The useful pad range, however, is reduced by the thickness of the counter top. For example, a 2-inch counter top will result in a 6-inch RFID pad range from the counter top.

Guidelines• Ensure sufficient working space below the counter top for installation. The pad mounting area must be

accessible from the rear and/or front of the furniture and the minimum working volume is 18 in. × 18 in. × 18 in. (46 cm × 46 cm ×46 cm).

Note:Some counter tops may have metal parts beneath the surface that could further reduce the range.

• 3M recommends marking the top surface to indicate the detection area, which should be about pad size.

• On the underside of the desktop, drill four pad mounting holes. In wood or composite counter tops, drill wood-screw pilot holes. In a hard material, such as slate or granite, drill holes for plastic screw anchors. The 3M-supplied kit is for mounting in wood or composite surfaces. If the counter top is stone, the library must purchase appropriate materials. This should include anchors to accommodate 1” x 1/8” flathead screws.

• Mounting holes should be off center so that they do not interfere with the pad’s cable.

• A .375 in. (9.5 mm) cable routing hole is required if the reader is placed on the desktop or countertop.

Configuration forms

Pad Staff Workstation configuration formsUse these forms to record Pad Staff Workstation configuration information, which the 3M technician will use to configure your system. Scanner and RFID reader configuration are shared between the Pad Staff Workstation and Conversion Station software. Consequently, you need to fill out the scanner and RFID reader portions of these configuration forms only once.
