Packaging- serves to shield good from the environment. IDEAL Sustainable Packaging= NO PACKAGING
BUT!!! Logistics wont work without packaging: 1) Protect goods during transportation 2) Bundle components in a single package. 3) Facilitates good handling and storage 4) Hygiene purposes 5) Controlled related information on package
(shipment ID, delivery info, routing labels, handling instruction…)
Remove- eliminate , where possible, unnecessary packaging layers Reduce- optimize the size and weight for a compact packaging Reuse- increasing the value of the packaging in order to extend the packaging life span. Recycle- use material that can be converted into something new and design recycling programs. Renewable- maximize the proportion of renewable resources, and use biodegradable material.

CRITERIA: A. Is beneficial, safe & healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle B. Meets market criteria for performance and cost C. Is sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy D. Optimizes the use of renewable or recycled source materials E. Is manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices F. Is made from materials healthy throughout the life cycle G. Is physically designed to optimize materials and energy H. Is effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial closed loop cycles
!!!A true closed loop system for all packaging materials!!!
1 ton of plastic= 3453Kg of CO2 1 ton of paper= 676Kg of CO2

Reduce & Remove packaging material switching to compact packaging using less raw materials and smaller size of packaging
n NOKIA’s packaging reduction strategy achievements:
• reduced amount of trucks by 5000
• Saved approx. 15,000 tons of packaging material
• Registered savings of about 100mio€
NOKIA 2006
n Motivation • Reducing raw material used
• Financial incentives
• Logistic incentives
• Transportation efficiency
• Reducing carbon footprints during the LCA of packages.

Design to Recycle & Reuse
Unilever Recycling & reuse plans: “We will make it easier for consumers to recycle our packaging.”
REFILL pouches for sunlight dishwashing in South Africa: -90% less weight than original plastic bottle -halved the amount of non-recycled material. -Saving 34 tones of plastic waste -Annual Cost saving of €400,000
Pros Cons
Reduces energy consumption
Not always cost effective
Reduces pollution and Global warming
Recycled products may not last for long
Judicial and sustainable use or resources
Unsafe & unhygienic recycling sites
Conserves natural resources
Difficult to implement on large scale
Reduces amount of waste to landfills
High initial costs
“Working in partnership with industry, governments and NGOs, we aim to increase recycling and recovery rates on avg. by 5% by 2015 & 15% by 2020. For some this means doubling or even tripling existing recycling rates.”

Renewable sources and Biodegradable Material
Coca-Cola PlantBottle: -30% plant based material -70% petroleum based material Compared to traditional PETBottle: -Reduce carbon emission by 25% -Less non-renewable resources -Recyclable and reusable.
Renewable resources: -resource that can be replenished naturally over time -wood, water, oil, biomass Biodegradable material: materials capable of being broken down rapidly by the action of microorganisms. -animal waste, starch, food, paper. Polylactic acid - biodegradable and renewable resource for packaging material derived from corn and it is used as a natural substitute for petroleum-based plastics and polyester products.
BUT!!! Limitations of application due to rapid degradation when exposed to excessive heat or humidity
Incentives: -Quick and natural degradation -Renewable and environmentally friendly -less production energy -reduced dependence for fossil fuels
