Glossary
Sealing areaThe sealing area is the area, in which a correct seal can be made without damaging the pouch.
Sealing temperatureThe sealing temperature is the temperature, at which an optimum seal can be achieved. This temperature is specific to the machine and material, and it has to be determined through sealing trials. The sealing temperature is generally the mean temperature of the sealing range.
PA/PEPA (polyamide) has low permeability against oils, fats, liquids and aromas, and it also has outstanding mechanical properties (tear and puncture resistance). PE (polyethylene) is significantly cheaper and has a good moisture vapour barrier.
OPA/PPBiaxially-oriented polyamide/polypropylene is a PA/PP film, which is stretched by rollers in both longitudinal and horizontal directions. This procedure influences the molecular structure of the film, and better transparency, rigidity and moisture vapour barrier are achieved by this means. The PP part of the film increases the temperature resistance. This means that the material is ideally suited to cooking applications.
Shrink propertiesThe shrink properties of a pouch are given in % and a temperature, for example 50% at 98°C means that the pouch shrinks by 50% at 98°C. The shrinkage is however less at a lower temperature.
Shrink pouch dimensionsIn order to achieve the optimum quality when packing in shrink pouches, the size of the pouch is crucial. The formula below is used to calculate the pouch dimension:
Calculation of the pouch dimensions
Pouch width: (2 x product height + 2 x product width) x 0.55 to 0.6Pouch length: (2 x product length + 2 x product height) + 120 to 150 2
e.g. Cheese bread 100 x 100 x 300 mmPouch width: 200 + 200 x 0.55 = 220 mmPouch length: 600 + 200 + 130 = 530 mm 2
BRCBritish Retail Consortium is a trade association based in London, which specifies the standards for food safety (handling, packaging and processing). This certification has established itself worldwide, and it is crucial for our packaging material.

IFSThe International Featured Standards (IFS) are a certification program for ensuring food safety, as well as quality and conformity in the logistics (storage, transshipment and transport) of food.
SterilisingIs a process, which completely kills microorganisms and their spores as well as viruses and prions. The temperature for this process is generally between 110°C and 135°C, and the process lasts for 10 to 20 minutes.
PasteurisingPasteurising is a process, which extends the shelf life of food and minimizes microorganisms. The core temperature varies depending on the process and type of food, but it is always below 100°C.
Migration limit valuesThis is defined in the Swiss legislation of the EDI (Federal Department of Home Affairs) by means of consumer goods (ditto EUR-Lex 320020017 DE). This legislation controls the limit values of various substances, which arise in packaging materials in direct contact with food.
Edge seal pouchAn edge seal pouch is a type of pouch, which is manufactured from two film webs, and it consists therefore of three sealed sides.
Tubular pouchA tubular pouch is a type of pouch, which is manufactured from a tube of film, and it is therefore sealed on only one side.
Shrink pouch TUThe shrink pouch TU = tubular type
Shrink pouch SIThe shrink pouch SI = side seam type
