Pacifica Forest Trace Happenings JANUARY 2017 et’s take a moment to reminisce about some of the highlights of last year before we tell you about some exciting plans for this year! First, it’s nice to remember our 2016 fundraisers which raised a lot of money for needy children, the elderly and for cancer. “How did we do it?” We feel a little guilty answering that question… but we did it “by enjoying ourselves!” Remember the Red Nose Carnival where we had over 30 carnival games for you to play, a stilt walker and even a caricaturist? Nearly everyone walked away with a prize and a smile on their face. For Breast Cancer month we held a variety show where you were kind enough to donate to the cause as you enjoyed a show starring top comedian Eddie Capone and numerous other wonderful stars who donated their time and talents. For Valentine’s Day we bought Valentine cards for each other, raising much needed funds for the elderly in Broward County. We also had some great dance parties in 2016 with a different band each time! How about our Giggle Feet Dance and the Mardi Gras Dance with “Poppy,” our Independence Day Dance with The Marty Alma band and the St Patrick’s Day and Labor Day dances with the Ralph D’Ovideo showband. The Kentucky Derby was a huge success as was our annual Health Fair and our wonderful tribute to our cancer survivors in a program we called Superheroes of Hope. Another highlight of course was Veterans Day with The Hollywood Hills cadets. Passover and The High Holy Days were superb and for the first time we got our chorus involved with our Hanukkah opening service. Great fun! The biggest highlight of the year was introducing “Family Night” where we see so many residents enjoy a great evening with their friends and family. We are looking forward to continuing it in 2017 along with some new and exciting activities and entertainment. We can all look forward to a beautiful new Clubhouse in the summer where plans are already being made for a spectacular grand re-opening. The management and staff of Pacifica Forest Trace wish you a very happy and healthy 2017. Celebrations have come and are going. Here we are in theNew Year of 2017. As the key word we shared in December’scolumn was “adaptation,” let’s consider January’s word of themonth, “resolution.”

How many resolutions have we made in the past, only tobe resolved on the first day of the month and forgotten by the5th? 12th? 19th? Why? Perhaps they were too lofty? Toochallenging? Too demanding? Whatever the reason, they weredisregarded as another year of forgotten promises. This year,

I’m going to try a new promise—or should I say, “premise.” I promise myselfto resolve realistic achievements: no more weight goals that will result in a“Miss America” figure, No more exercise program goals that will make mereturn to the strength of my youth. Instead, I resolve the following... Goal 1. To greet and treat my fellow residents with a smile and pleasantword. This reminds me of a story I heard recently. One resident greetedanother, “Have a good and healthy day.” The response was, “My welfare isnone of your business, thank you. Mind your own!” Goal 2. To achieve at least one positive health goal per day, either throughdiet or exercise. Here’s another true story. Recently at my breakfast table, one of my friends announced, “I’m going to have my monthly treat...bacon!”Another responded ,“For me NEVER! I never touch bacon, sausage, ham,hot dogs, pastrami ….” and on and on she went. My immediate response toher recital was: “My dear, you won’t live longer, it will just seem longer!” Goal 3. To practice daily my life’s belief. The joy of well-being. So withthe advent of the New Year, I bring you the wise words of a severelyhandicapped but truly free spirit, who was blind, deaf and denied the abilityof speech. She wrote: “Either life is a daring adventure or it is nothing.” Happy New Year —SuzyEditor’s Note—Our congratulations to ‘Dear Suzy’ and belated happy birthday. It’s proof that you’re a special lady when family flies in from all over the countryto celebrate with you.
