U.S. Soccer Federation’s Coaching Development Department has worked tirelessly the past couple of
years to revamp and update the Coaching Development in the U.S. U.S. Soccer has invested huge
resources to better align the Coaching Licensing courses with that of leading foreign federations
throughout the world. Some of these significant changes aim to improve the development of
coaches at all levels but also to provide a consistent pathway for coaches across the country.
In 2015, U.S. Soccer will release the new online “F” License to coincide with the launch of their state-of-the-art Digi-
tal Coaching Center (DCC). The “F” License is being offered to coaches working with the six to eight year players but
is accessible to all coaches working with youth. It will be the foundation course for all future courses along the Li-
cense Pathway.
*In May of 2015, the “F” License will be the prerequisite for all coaches wishing to take the National “E” License.
As of January of 2015, NO WAIVERS will be offered to bypass the prerequisites to the “E” or “D” License courses.
To take the National “D” License, coaches must have successfully completed and earned the National “E” License and
held it for a minimum of six (6) months prior to taking the “D” License.
The National “D” License course is now broken into two (2) separate weekends with a minimum of ten (10) weeks in
between the first weekend (Instructional Weekend) and the second testing weekend (Performance Review Weekend).
The results of attending the “D” License course, a coach will either earn the 1) National “D” Pass or 2) State “D.”
A coach earning a State “D” must re-test at a future course to try to earn the National “D” status. Coaches are NOT
guaranteed to upgrade at a re-test.
To be eligible to take a National “C” License, coaches must have successfully completed and earned the Natioanl “D”
License for a minimum of 12 months prior to the “C” course. For coaches with a State “D” License, you must re-test
and attempt to earn your National “D” status. You must still wait the mandatory 12 months from your successful
National “D” completion.
For the National “C” or “B” Licenses, a coach with an equivalent Foreign License or required Professional Playing
Experience can begin their pathway at a more advanced stage. It does not grant any licensing until successfully com-
pleting a licensing course. For more information and a copy of the application to submit to U.S. Soccer, please
NO WAIVERS to the National “A” License without the successful completion of the “B” License.
U.S. Soccer’s Digital Coaching Center is a state-of-the-art online educational platform providing coaches valuable
and comprehensive resources like access to creating session plans with an online graphics tool as well as access to an
archive of U.S. Soccer training sessions, and more.
