In an effort to gain uniformity throughout the country and to reinforce a National Style of Play modeled after the U.S. National Team, Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has insti-tuted the number system shown in the dia-gram.

Looking beyond the number, the number ‘position’ and who is playing it, can tell a lot about what type of a soccer player (s)he is within a particular system of play. The USA’s formation in previous games have been generally a 1-4-3-3 as shown in the diagram.

How does this help me as a coach?

It will be a great addition to your learning and your coaching tool kit. As you develop your own coaching style and your players’ playing style, you can now reference the number when talking positions and allow your point to be ‘visualized’ within a known system of play. It also provides a base point of reference for the role and the functions of playing a particular number or position.

Special points of in-terest: Q&A with Tony Lepore

He works with the U.S. Soccer Federation to improve coaching through better teaching.

In recent interviews with Mike Woitalla of Soccer America, he explains some inter-esting ideas to improve teaching and learning the game. Click below to read more.
