RE: Co·Location of a tertiary maternity hospital with the new children's hospital (PA0043)

To the Secretary,

As a neonatologist involved in caring for the most critically ill newborn infants, I wish to highlight the

need for critical co·location adjacency of the proposed new national children's hospital with the

proposed Coombe Maternity hospital redevelopment on the StJames's site.Specifically there must

be enough capacity to accommodate Immediate co·adjacency with an integrated building design

combining the paediatric and maternity hospitals.

This is needed because of the criticality of illness our tiny newborn patients suffer. These infants

cannot cope with long corridor/tunnel distance connections. Due to the perilous challenge of

providing high level complex intensive care in motion, complications occur during these transfers

and our little patients can suffer morbidity and mortality.

As you adjudicate this planning application, I simply request that the board members fully

interrogate the limits/facility of site accommodation and deliverability of what is required to

provide this critical co-location model, and do so in the context of all other proposed

developments/plans for new and re·developments on the St. James Site. The 1.1 /ftllion newborn

infants and children of Ireland now and of the future rely on your expertise to make the correct

decision.

Yours sincerely

Or. Pamela O'Connor

Consultant neonatologist
