Myles Fox About the Festival ………………… The Truro Music Festival was started in 1922 by Professor Harry Wellard and his assistants Miss Margaret McLean and Miss Lois Richardson. Prof. Wellard was organist at several Truro churches, taught music at the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College, and was supervisor of music in Colchester County schools. He was devoted to music in the community, and was particularly interested in fostering its role in childhood education and development. His many achievements are honoured nearly a century later in the annual Truro Music Festival. In the beginning, the Festival was only for schools, and was known as the Truro Choral Society Music Competition. The Festival quickly grew to include county schools and school-aged soloists, and today includes musicians of all ages from the Colchester area and neighboring counties in Nova Scotia. The tradition has continued up to the present day, and the 2017 Festival will be the 95th anniversary of this Truro institution. In fact, the Truro Music Festival is the third oldest competitive music festival in Canada, an achievement for which the community can be justifiably proud.

P a g e | 20 Meet Your Adjudicator Maureen Batt is celebrated for her “rich, warm sound and masterful acting” (Opera Canada). Recently, Maureen’s solo career has focused on promoting Canadian contemporary repertoire by collaborating with established and emerging composers to commission, première, and re-perform their works. She released her debut album, Lady of the Lake (Leaf Music/Naxos), in June 2017; it includes song cycles by Schubert and Halifax-based composer Fiona Ryan.

Maureen is co-artistic director of Essential Opera—an opera company founded in 2010 with Erin Bardua—and part of the Indie Opera Toronto collective. Season 7 begins with a performance of Gianni Schicchi with Orchestra Toronto.

In 2015, Maureen founded Crossing Borders, a contemporary classical recital series which has toured programs of art song, opera arias, musical theatre, and electronics to the United States and Canada with Cheryl Duvall. The third tour took place in January and February 2017 in Halifax, Toronto, and Philadelphia.

Her formal training includes a Master of Music from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Music from Dalhousie University, and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Thomas University (French and Spanish). She has been the recipient of awards from the SOCAN Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, SSHRC, FACTOR, Music Nova Scotia, and Arts Nova Scotia.

While teaching at Bravo Academy (Toronto), Maureen’s voice students won festival competitions; agents; and admission to private arts schools, musical theatre diploma programs, and bachelor of music degree programs. She has also been on faculty at the Halifax Summer Opera Festival. Maureen teaches and gives masterclasses to singers of all levels and genres in Halifax.
