The SPD Series makes surgesuppression safer than ever

The SPD Series employs safetyand design features that makesurge protection safer than ever.Unlike many surge protectivedevices, the SPD Series con-tains no user-serviceable partsor items that require periodicmaintenance, such as replace-able surge modules, replaceablefuses, surge counter memory

backup batteries or wire lugsthat require periodic retighten-ing. Integrated versions of theunit are factory installed, mean-ing no potential contact withharmful voltages present withinthe unit is possible.

The SPD Series has also takensafety to the next level by usingthermally protected metal oxidevaristors (MOVs) as its coresurge suppression component. These thermally protectedMOVs operate in a safe manner, even when subjected toabnormal conditions, such as

temporary overvoltages or highfault current conditions. Whenone of these conditions exists, the thermally protected MOVsare removed from the circuitquickly and safely before apotentially unsafe conditioncan occur, with absolutely nodischarge of smoke or ionizedgases. Usage of this technologyeliminates any concerns ofdamage occurring to othercomponents within the electricalassembly should failure of anintegrated SPD occur. Using thelatest in technology and surge

protective device design, the SPDSeries provides safe, reliable,worry-free surge protection.

    The integrated SPDperformance advantage

Installation conductor lengthis the single most importantfactor related to an SPDsperformance. Performancedecreases as the connectedconductor length increases.Integrating the SPD within theelectrical assembly provides thebest possible surge protection

by keeping installationconductor lead lengths as shortas possible. Integrating the SPDwithin an electrical assemblycan decrease let-throughvoltages by hundreds of volts, providing you with the bestpossible surge protection forsensitive electronic loads.

The SPD Series is availableas an integrated devicewithin the following Eatonelectrical assemblies:

    Panelboards

    Switchboards

    Motor control centers

    Switchgear

    Automatic transfer switches

    Bus plugs

    Enhanced protectionstatus indicators

The Eaton SPD Series haselevated the features normallyfound within surge protectivedevices to the next level. Unlikemany surge protectors that mayhave only single-colored indica-tors that simply indicate whetherpower is applied to the SPD,each SPD Series unit includesdual-colored protection statuslight emitting diodes (LEDs)

that indicate the true status ofthe protection. On three-phaseunits, if power is removed froma phase, the units protectionstatus LEDs continue to indicatethe status of the protection onthat phase, not the status of thepower applied to the phase. Thisnew feature ensures that theuser is supplied with accurateinformation concerning thestatus of the protection the SPDis supplying on the phase, notthe status of the power appliedto the phase.

All units that require a neutral

wire connection also containan additional set of dual-coloredLEDs that report the status ofthe protection in the neutral-ground (N-G) protection mode.Like the phase protection statusLEDs, the N-G protectionstatus LEDs also report thetrue status of the protectionin the N-G mode.

Although most SPDs on themarket contain N-G mode pro-tection, they do not monitor andindicate the status of the protec-tion in that mode. Specifyingthe SPD Series N-G protectionmode status indication featurewill ensure that users aresupplied with complete andaccurate information concerningthe SPDs protection status.

20 kA nominal dischargecurrent rating (I

    n)

The entire SPD Series productoffering has a nominal dischargecurrent (I

    n) of 20 kA, the highest

achievable rating for this impor-tant parameter. This is a newrating for SPDs that is includedas part of UL 1449 3rd Editiontesting and certification. Thisrating provides an indication ofthe SPDs design robustness

and ability to handle a numberof large-magnitude surgesover a short period of timeand remain operational withintested parameters.

    During In

testing, the SPD issubjected to 15 surges of acurrent magnitude chosen bythe SPDs manufacturer. Validcurrent magnitude choices forthe test are 20 kA and 10 kA forType 1 SPDs. Valid choices forType 2 SPDs are 20 kA, 10 kA,5 kA and 3 kA. The 15 surgesare then applied at the valuechosen by the manufacturer.

Prior to the start of In

testing,a preliminary voltage protectionrating (VPR) is measured. TheVPR is the measured let-throughvoltage of the unit when a 6 kV,3 kA surge is applied. This valueis documented and saved as areference. After all surges havebeen applied, the VPR is mea-sured once again and comparedto the value that was recordedprior to the 15-surge sequence. In order to pass the I

    ntest, the

SPD must survive all 15 surges, and the measured pre- andpost-VPR values must be within10% of each other.

Choosing an SPD with an In

of 20 kA ensures that yourequipment is being protectedby a unit that will continue tomaintain a high level of surgeprotection performance, evenafter being subjected to multiplehigh-magnitude surges.

Industry standards for lightningprotection systems requirethe installed SPDs to have anominal discharge current of20kA. The 2008 edition ofNational Fire Protection Agency(NFPA) Standard 780, titledStandard for the Installation ofLightning Protection Systems, states the requirement insection 4.18.3.1.2. The 2007edition of UnderwritersLaboratories (UL) Standard 96A,titled Installation Requirementsfor Lightning ProtectionSystems, states the require-ment in section 13.1. Choosingan SPD with an I

    nof 20 kA

will ensure that compliancewith these standards canbe achieved.

SPD Series unit integrated within an

    Eaton panelboard

In this installation, the SPD is

    mounted directly to the panelboards

bus bars. This type of installation

will provide the best possible surge

    protection by minimizing the

    connected lead length.

The SPD Series is also available as

an integrated unit interfaced via a

circuit breaker resident in the electri-

    cal assembly. This installation keeps

    connected lead lengths short while

    providing a means of disconnecting

power to the unit quickly and easily.

    Feature package options

The SPD Series provides userswith the option of selectingbetween three feature packages. These feature packages are thebasic, standard and standardwith surge counter. The properfeature package can be selectedbased on the requirements ofthe application or specification.

    Basic feature package

The basic feature package isperfect for applications wherebasic, cost-effective, safe andreliable surge protection isrequired but budgets dont allowfor extra, additional features.Rather than sacrifice perfor-mance or safety due to cost,SPD Series units with the basicfeature package provide youwith high-performing surge pro-

tection without sacrificing safetyor reliability. The basic featurepackage provides the same levelof surge protection and safetyprovided by the standard andstandard with surge counterfeature packages minus some ofthe features found in them. Thepackage contains dual-coloredprotection status LEDs thatreport the true status of theprotection in each phase/mode.All four-wire plus ground unitsalso contain an additional set ofdual-colored protection statusLEDs that report the status ofthe protection in the neutral-ground mode.

    Standard feature package

The standard feature packageincludes all of the featuresfound in the basic feature pack-age, plus an audible alarm withsilence button, EMI/RFI filtering, and a form C relay contactthat can be used for remoteannunciation of the SPDs status. The audible alarm activatesand the form C relay contactchanges state when any loss of

protection is detected or a faultcondition exists with the unit.Should such a condition occur, the audible alarm can besilenced by pressing the silencebutton. The EMI/RFI filterprovides up to 50 dB of noiseattenuation over the range of10 kHz through 100 MHz.

    Standard with surgecounter feature package

The standard with surgecounter feature packageincludes all of the features fouin the standard feature packagplus a six-digit surge counterwith a reset button. The surgecounter indicates the ongoingcount of the number of surgethe unit has been exposed toand stores them in nonvolatile

memory. Should power to theSPD Series unit be completelyinterrupted, the surge counterwill recall and display the surgcount prior to the interruptionwhen power is restored. Unlikmany surge protectors, the SPSeries surge counter memoryfeature does not require a bacup battery that would requireperiodic replacement in order achieve its memory functiona
