The Rhino Charge, held in Kalama Conservancy, one of the most stunning landscapes of Samburu, raised well over USD one million, crossing the mark of KES 100 million for the first time in the 26-year history of the event. This is the outcome of tremendous support from so many volunteers and corporate houses under the leadership of David Lowe and his dedicated Rhino Charge committee. Thanks to this, we were able to leverage additional funding, including KES 145 million from IFAD, KWS and Mount Kenya Trust towards Phase Two of the Mt. Kenya Fence and KES 10.3 million from AFEW and a private US donor towards the Bongo Surveillance Programme.

Major achievements have been realized in Rhino Ark’s conservation portfolio, in particular regarding the construction of our electric fences and the aerial surveillance programme. Over 68 kilometres of the Mt. Kenya Electric fence have been built, whilst the 50 km long fence in Mau Eburu is nearly completed. On the other hand, the periodic surveillance flights organized by Rhino Ark are making increasingly positive impacts on the management and conservation of the mountain forests, both in Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares.

Over the past year, much effort has gone into the development of two other programmes that are complementary to our fences: ecosystem connectivity and community support. These two programmes are essential to mitigating the potential impacts of our fences on the movement of wildlife they intend to protect, as well as to securing the long-term support of the forest-adjacent communities.

Good progress has been made towards establishing a framework to help secure wildlife corridors and dispersal areas between Eburu Forest and Lake Naivasha on one side and Eburu Forest and Eastern Mau on the other. With the support of the Department of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing, a feasibility study was commissioned. Guided by a committee that included Rhino Ark, the study was completed earlier this year. With the support of Rhino Ark, the study findings were recently presented to the stakeholders and a process was set up to start implementing the study recommendations.

Under the leadership of the Nyeri County Government, Rhino Ark is, together with key partners, including KWS and Space for Giants, exploring the feasibility of re-establishing and securing the wildlife corridor between Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares. Such corridors present benefits not only to the wildlife but also to the corridor adjacent communities as well as to the economy of the County.

Our support to the communities has focused on two key components: environmental awareness and education, and reducing the dependency of communities on forest resources. Formal environmental curricula have been successfully implemented in the primary and secondary schools around Mau Eburu. Together with partner World Vision, we have protected a key water source of Mau Eburu forest and rehabilitated part of the water network to improve water quality and quantity to the settlements and reduce the need for community members to enter in the forest in search of water.

For once the weather ensured high spirits at the 2014 UK Rhino Charge in September, welcomed by an unprecedented number of spectators and participants. It took place at the Slindon 4x4 Safari Centre, Arundel, West Sussex, for the first time; which will also be the same location for next year. The venue was highly suitable as the sandy and bumpy landscape brought back nostalgic memories of Kenya and Africa. Although the course proved to be quite a challenge for participants, optimism remained high. ‘The spirit of the event’ was won by Tim Wood with his team in ninth place, despite leaving the race early with a severely damaged vehicle.

The competition was fierce with only 13 points separating the winner and runner up. The winner of the UK Charge 2014 was Brian Bealey and his team with 864 points and Sachin Patel’s team were hot on their heels with 851 points. Patel won the Victor Ludorum award for the combined success of the highest sponsorship raised and their impressive performance in the competition. The team won the opportunity of entering the Kenya Rhino Charge, 2015. This year’s competition raised £6,546.50 for Rhino Ark, a sum which is expected to increase. UK Charge organiser and Rhino Ark UK Trustee, John Bowden, commented, “We were pleased with the turnout and think we can do even better next year. We may be small compared with the Kenya Charge, but every penny counts when it comes to conservation.”

Many people may not be aware that we have been taking part in the Charge since the first one in 1989, when we hijacked our factory delivery pick up, a double cab Datsun 4WD 2litre petrol. After two Charges, that pickup was confiscated by the boss and we opted for a hired Suzuki 1300 from Rasul’s Car Hire, on the condition that we pay for all damage done. After three years of that, Rasul got a little tired of us and we eventually all chipped in and bought a dedicated Charge car, a 1967 short wheel base left hand drive Landy. The 2.25 litre engine was too little for all the beefing up we did, but we persevered. We even converted it to right hand drive. After a few years of that we got a break when the Chodas wanted to sell their monster 3 speed Nissan Patrol, sometimes referred to as the Jonga. That was when we realized what power can achieve. However, as our team started getting older and slower, the constant barrage of thorns through the ears and cheeks finally made us look for a more “civilized, mature” ride where we could sit in the car without being torn to shreds or having caterpillars and spiders down the back of our shirts. (our team consists of one youngster, just shy of 40, three 55 year olds and a 63 year old. We like our comfort)

So, we got ourselves a newer Nissan Patrol, a 4litre petrol and caged it up with half a tonne of metal. That car has been pretty good, save for the broken arms (rear suspension), a few broken shocks and shredded bushes. Then came the piece de resistance; Alan McKittrick, winner of three Charges and fundraiser extraordinaire, wanted to sell his Unimog axles and we were lucky enough to buy them. Although the transition took a couple of years, to modify fitting from Range Rover to Nissan Patrol, a monster was finally born.

This is the car we currently use, but have never fully developed to it’s full potential. The steering from Nissan to Unimog has been an enormous challenge, resulting in broken tie rod ends and even a bent steering arm.

This year, our man Friday, who is responsible for loading the car with all the tools, lubes, etc, forgot his duties in favour of a more famous Kenyan pastime and we ended up in this situation, at around 10.30 am without a winch control cable, which was left at the campsite with our tools. An hour earlier, we had replaced a broken tie rod end using only a Leatherman. Don’t try that at home, it’s not worth the scraped knuckles or numb fingers. Trying to get out of this jam was nuts. We tried to ask our friends from Team 61 to pull us out when they came to visit the control which was a hundred metres from where we were stuck. They tried winching us and overloaded their electrics. The power cable was glowing red hot and all the insulation melted and shorted the battery against earth. That was a very loud bang with a lot of sparks flying. Their battery went dead. However, after a couple of hours of insulation tape and the back up battery, they were up and running, but we were still high and dry. The dehydration started taking its toll and we continued trying to go up and down and all over the place, trying to get back up and eventually ended up stupidly breaking our indestructible front axle. We had stripped the teeth off the front crown wheel and that’s when we decided to call it a day, around 3.00 pm. This marked the end of our 26th Charge.

Over the years, we have learnt a lot and yet we are still those silly amateurs in their ill prepared cars. We don’t spend millions on our car(s). Instead our efforts are geared more towards collecting millions for the Cause. We try to organize events to collect funds. In the old days, it was dinner/dance programmes, Treasure Hunts (anyone remember those? Security doesn’t allow them any more), Golf tournaments, etc. And of course, begging……Eventually it was

embarrassing asking the usual suspects for donations and we came up with an idea, inspired by the Pedal Cart Race and the Hog Charge. Why not have a 24 hour cycling marathon? That’s when the Rhinothon was born. It was a day and night cycling challenge for teams of 20, in relay fashion, sort of like Le Mans. The first event was held at the Kilimanjaro Construction farm, next to the Mamba Village, with a few floodlights strung along the route. That quickly developed into a hugely popular event with professional lighting supplied by Film Studios with their super silent generators, whispering through the night. Venues changed from Jamhuri High School to Hillcrest School and eventually a huge plot in Nyari which was earmarked for a housing estate, but had some challenges. Then, a couple of years ago, with rising security concerns and the lack of a suitable venue, The Rhinothon became a daytime only event held at Nairobi’s famous Karura forest. The charm of the night cycling was no longer there and this year the entry list was very small. From over 550 cyclists the previous years, we were down to 125. It was a disaster. We barely broke even. This was in April. We had to raise just under a million shillings in 7 weeks. Panic stations….!! The forgotten friends list came out of the closet. Luckily, our golf tournament was well sponsored and raised almost 200k. In the end the whole team tried hard and we were just able to cover our guaranteed million. We are still looking for a suitable venue for a day and night Rhinothon and would appreciate any ideas.

A lot of regular Chargers probably think of us as the Jokers. After all, we have ‘won’ the Fockarwe prize…… twice?? We also have a Spirit of the Charge award under our belt. And despite our veteran status, we have completed the Charge only a few times, the best position being 14th overall (I believe there were 13 entries then). However, there is one thing we have never forgotten, the whole point of the Rhino Charge. The fundraising has taken up more of our time and effort than preparing our car, and despite the jibes about “you guys never finish”, we are proud to have been on the Millionaires Roll of Honour for a very long time.

It’s not like we don’t try. Our navigator (me) is from the times when people used compasses and reference landmarks. I still cannot use a GPS if my life depended on it. The rest of the oldies are even worse navigators. One time we made a left instead of a right turn and it was five minutes before I realized we were heading towards Tanzania….. (Fockarwe number 1). That bloody Terratrip showed the whole track for all to see. It was fun when there was no Terratrip, but you had to ensure that your speedo cable was well protected in the bush. One Charge, we broke our speedo cable and actually did a bush repair and completed the charge. Thereafter, we always carried two spare cables. You had to explain the broken seals and sometimes the penalty was quite stiff. The

distance between the two checkpoints where your cable was broken was taken as the maximum done by the other drivers.

These days, they don’t allow ATVs to take part, but in the past there was a crazy lady, Donna Hurt, who drove an ATV in the Charge. I remember standing on the edge of a lugga trying to work out the best way down, when she came flying up it, all four wheels in the air and almost ran me over. Yes, those were the days. There were much fewer rules then, too.

My all time Charge hero has to be Ian McCrae. His Ford Taunus, rear wheel drive only, with its Alfa Romeo engine and home made transfer box was a beast. One time, he was stuck among some boulders and tried to power through. The whole front of the car lifted six feet up in the air…..Awesome…!!

As Chargers go, I guess we are pretty much below average. Apart from our young 40 year old, the rest of our big bellied boys can probably scout for about 2 or 3 kilometres before knees give up or just exhaustion sets in. Then, we make some misjudgement and get stuck for hours. One time, our Land Rover got stuck in a sandy river. We kicked up a lot of sand and disturbed a sweat fly nest. You don’t want to do that…..they were everywhere, up our noses, in our ears, trying to get into our eyes. We left the car and ran 100metres away. When we got back to the car, we were so wrapped up in handkerchiefs, rags and anything else we could find, we looked like mummies. Then there was the time when the Landy was perched on a cliff edge, with three wheels in the air, held by just a thin hand winch cable. Rob Collinge passed us and commented that my brother, the driver, had Big Brass Balls. It took us quite a long time to get out of that jam, but my brother had a huge smile on his face, the risk of rolling down the hill, forgotten.

Man, we have so many stories to tell……the four foot Puff Adder we found as we were clearing boulders out of the way. The “cat like creature” that made us all make a dash for the safety of the car. The time we were flying along a dry river bed and our cameraman flew out of the back, luckily landing on the soft sand. We were 300 feet away before we missed him.

Team 27 may not be that good at the Rhino Charge but we have surely had some great fun along the years and now our kids have entered their own team so the family tradition will continue. As for us wazees, we shall keep on struggling and raising money for the best 4WD event in the world, and the most noble cause. Fockarwe 3, here we come!

THE RHINO ARK CHARITABLE TRUST NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2014

1. SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES The principal accounting policies adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below: (a) Basis of preparation The financial statements summarise the transactions of the Trust and deal with the net assets at the disposal of

the trustees. The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost basis of accounting. (b) Income recognition Donations and Rhino Charge collections are recognised on receipt. Investment income is recognised on accrual basis. (c) Property and equipment Items of property and equipment are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation. Depreciation is charged on the

straight line basis over the estimated useful lives of the assets. The annual depreciation rates in use are: Motor vehicles 25.0% Furniture and fittings 12.5% Computers 33.3% Office equipment 12.5% (d) Foreign currency Transactions during the year are converted into Kenya Shillings at the rates ruling at the transaction dates. Assets

and liabilities at the reporting date, which are expressed in foreign currencies, are translated at the rates ruling at that date. The resulting differences from conversion and translation are dealt with in the income and expenditure account.

(e) Financial instruments A financial instrument is a contract that gives rise to both a financial asset of one enterprise and a financial liability

of another enterprise. The financial instruments held by the Trust are investments in the money market, trade and other receivables, bank balances and cash and trade and other payables.

All the financial instruments held by the Trust are accounted for on amortised cost basis. (f) Receivables Receivables are stated at nominal value, less provision for any amounts considered irrecoverable. (g) Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and in hand and short term deposits with an original maturity of

three months or less. (h) Use of estimates The preparation of financial statements requires that management makes estimates and assumptions that affect

amounts reported in the financial statements and accompanying notes. Actual results could differ from these estimates. The more significant estimation process is related to the determination of provision for doubtful debts. Although some variability is inherent in these estimates, management believes that the amounts provided are adequate.

Eburufence:42kmsbuilt,nearlycompleted Construction of the Eburu fence is progressing steadily towards completion. As of 30 October 2014, 42 (84 percent) of the projected 50 kilometres of electric fence have been fully built and powered. The 34-man fencing team, comprising a mix of skilled technicians from KWS and members of the local community have worked with dedication and consistency in the often challenging terrain. The fence has now reached the final stretch along the Loldia Farm boundary, with a clear view of the fire tower where construction started in March 2013.

The structure is situated at the boundary of Eburu forest and Kipkulei farm in Ndabibi location. The facility is part of the overall fence infrastructure and will house the solar power system for a 20km section of fence. The year 2013-2014 was marked by major milestones in our major new projects in Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu which commenced in the last financial year. It was also the second year of continued consolidation of Rhino Ark’s expanded programme

It was also one of continued support both from thousands of donors to the annual Rhino Charge, direct corporate donations and a significant injection of value support from the Kenya Government of materials for Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu fencing projects.

Whilst the Mt. Kenya and Mau Eburu were at the centre of our current & forward planning and

funding in the year, the Aberdare Fence, Rhino Ark’s flagship project, remained a major focus of funds disbursement for its maintenance.

It has taken Rhino Ark 24 years to build and successfully assist in the daily running of what is recognized as East Africa’s longest wildlife conservation fence.

This year, Rhino Ark has begun the rehabilitation of the Phase I of the electric fence, along the Eastern Salient of the Aberdare National Park. The 38-kilometre phase that was completed in 1992 has now outlived its intended lifespan. The rehabilitation will extend the fence lifespan by another 20 years. This expresses the long-term commitment of Rhino Ark to the conservation of the Aberdare ecosystem and to providing sustainable solutions to the challenges facing Kenya’s water towers.

OVERALLFUNDS2013/14The total funds raised during the financial year under review were KES 261

million.Despite the difficult economic times, the 2013 Rhino Charge exceeded expectations

and raised at field audit a total of KES 88 million just above one million US dollars. Gross donations incorporating Rhino Charge and corporates amounted to KES 161

million.The Kenya Treasury was our major donor providing KES 100 million for fence

materials and managed through our fence construction partner, KWS. As those funds were not channelled through our accounts, they are not reflected in our balance sheets, although they are earmarked in support of our fence projects in Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu.

Every kilometre of fence built under the partnership agreements with KWS specifies that materials are provided by Treasury funds, whilst Rhino Ark’s inputs include payments to personnel for each completed kilometre of fence, vehicles, machinery, fuel, tools and mobile housing. In addition both KWS and Rhino Ark commit management time for constant supervision and issues resolution with communities along the pre-planned fence alignment.

In addition, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources provided over KES 5 million in support of the Feasibility Study on the Conservation of the Wider Eburu Forest Ecosystem through the Establishment and Management of the Wildlife Corridors and Dispersal Areas which has been recently completed.

MAUMT.EBURUCONSERVATIONANDFENCINGPROjECTWELLUNDERWAyThe construction of the 50km long wildlife proof electrified fence commenced on

14th March 2013. Over 50% of the fence was completed and one Energizer House built during the year under review. The fence will protect 8,715 hectares of indigenous forest within the Mau Forests Complex Water Tower.

The Mpesa Foundation’s support together with that of Finlays, the Kenyan Government and of Rhino Ark core funding will develop a fully rounded ecosystem conservation process for Mau Mt. Eburu. It will include completion of the fence, development of community-based natural resources management projects, forest rehabilitation and an anchor funding of KES 30 million for an endowment fund to be managed by a trust similar to the Aberdare Trust. The funds are being disbursed over a three-year cycle beginning in 2013/2014.

COMPLETIONOFPHASEONEOFMT.KENyAELECTRICFENCEThe construction of the Mt Kenya fence was launched on 7th September 2012.

The length of the fence will be approximately 450km long and will protect over 2,500 square kilometres of pristine forest. The fenced area will include the Mt. Kenya

National Park and the surrounding forests which were listed by UNESCO in 1997 as a World Heritage Site.

As at the date of this report, Phase One (53km) of the Mt. Kenya Electric Fence was completed and the construction of Phase Two (60km) well underway. However, construction of a section of Phase Two of the Mt. Kenya Fence in Chuka has been suspended. Some members of the community claim to have a cultural/ancestral interest in the gazetted forest reserve and they have petitioned the High Court in Meru to stop most activities in that forest, including fencing in April 2014. Rhino Ark, as a respondent in the case, is of the position that the fence is a human/wildlife conflict management tool and not a boundary marker, and as such do not interfere with any alleged interest in the forest. In the meantime, construction of the other sections of Phase Two continues.

THE gENERAL FUNDThe general fund as reflected in the balance sheet has been split into two

categories namely: Fence Maintenance Reserve and Fence Construction Reserve. Twenty percent of each year’s Rhino Charge donation is allocated specifically for maintenance of fence already constructed. This ensures that the huge amount of effort and money put into the conservation programme does not collapse from lack of maintenance. The maintenance reserve is therefore to earmark these funds for maintenance and not used for construction.

The fence construction reserve deficit has increased from KES 8 million to KES 41 million. This situation is expected to reverse during the current year. The fence maintenance reserve surplus increased during the year from KES 81 million to KES 103 million.

BONGOSURVEILLANCEPROGRAMME(BSP)SUCCESSESThe Bongo programme continues apace, thanks to a dedicated band of conservation

individuals who constantly seek out fund support from a variety of donors. Some of the funds go direct to the BSP whilst Rhino Ark secured funds from AFEW (The Giraffe Centre) of KES 1,780,000 during the year and which form part of a two year commitment totaling KES four million to support BSP in South Western Mau and Mau Mt. Eburu. The funds go towards collecting vital information about the Bongo, patrols, removal of snares and spear traps, as well as to the dynamic Bongo wildlife schools outreach programmes under BSP.

USD 5,000 was also received during the year from Rare Species Conservatory Foundation towards the BSP.

In addition to the funding mentioned above from Finlays, a further Bongo support project was initiated by Finlays for the South Western Mau region during the year.

OTHER INITIATIVESWe have continued to provide additional management support to our partners,

KFS and KWS and Mount Kenya Trust, by arranging aerial surveillance of the forests of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares to identify illegal activities within these two mountains.

We are also coordinating the support by the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) to KWS and KFS in the Mt. Kenya/Aberdare area. This support includes provision of training and the rehabilitation of key infrastructure in both mountain ecosystems.

As part of our commitment to combat poaching, we have partnered with Space for Giants and KWS to train KWS wardens from the Mountain Conservation Area in the prosecution of wildlife crimes.

THOUSANDS TO THANKRhino Ark has an enormous following in Kenya and due to awareness, international

following is increasing. Much of the fund raise focuses on the annual Rhino Charge where individual car entrants make substantial pledges and raise even more than their pledge each year. It is a grass-roots conservation thrust within Kenyan society that has now developed a deep foundation. Every donor knows that Rhino Ark’s ventures are to secure the nation’s precious ‘water towers’ and to work in partnership with the government to ensure good governance for maximum benefits. The 2011 Environmental Assessment triggered by Rhino Ark and with support from UNEP and the East African Wildlife Society’s Kenya, Forests Working Group (KFWG), has placed a value on the Aberdares alone at KES 59 billion annually in goods/services (water being the most important) and in biodiversity benefits.

It is always difficult to single out thanks in a report like this. Rhino Ark Charitable Trust has thousands of donors in Kenya and friends overseas who support our home grown and home driven conservation initiative.

MPESAFoundationvisitsEburu,adoptsmoreforest17th September 2014 marked a special event at Eburu forest. Rhino Ark, in collaboration with Kenya Forest Service hosted the MPESA Foundation for a forest rehabilitation day. A team of over 350 energetic Kenyans comprising MPESA Foundation staff, soldiers of the Kenya Defence Forces and local community members converged at the Kipkulei farm along the Eburu forest boundary in Ndabibi location to participate in the replanting of a 1 hectare section of the forest. At this event Les Baillie, the MPESA Foundation Executive Director, signed the Eburu Forest Rehabilitation Register. MappingofEburutrailsandfeaturesbeginsThe Eburu forest ecosystem is rich in biodiversity and natural features that remain largely unknown in the public domain. One of Rhino Ark’s goals for the Eburu project is raise the profile of the forest and create greater awareness amongst the public of its values and attractions. Towards this goal, an initiative has been launched to comprehensively document the features and attractions of the forest. This will involve, amongst other activities, the following: (1) engagement with local communities to identify key features and attractions of the forest and any forest related cultural activities; (2) GIS mapping of locations of interest in the forest and surrounding areas; and (3) documenting these features of the forest and sharing this content.

Waterforcommunity:OleSirwaspringsnowprotected Rhino Ark is supporting the local Eburu community in Ole Sirwa by improving the water infrastructure that serves the area. The Ole Sirwa Springs deep within Eburu forest are the primary water source for over 2,100 community members in the Ole Sirwa area of Ol Jorai Location. In September 2014, Rhino Ark engaged the services of a contractor to commence spring protection works involving upgrading the existing protective concrete and masonry structures at the spring points. These works, which will enable the spring water sources to be tapped more effectively, are now substantially completed and initial assessments indicate an increase in water flows. The initiative has been undertaken under a partnership collaboration with World Vision and with technical support from the Nakuru County Water Office. Funding for the works was provided by the MPESA Foundation.

NobelityprojectsupportsEburuforestrehabilitationRhino Ark’s conservation initiative in Eburu forest is attracting support from both local and international audiences. In June 2014, Rhino Ark introduced Turk Pipkin, Director of the Nobelity Project of Austin Texas, USA to the project. Resulting from this introduction, the Nobelity Project team undertook to rehabilitate 1 hectare of degraded forest near the Eburu forest station. The Nobelity Project team has also undertaken to provide funds for books and support for rehabilitation of dilapidated classrooms in Songoloi Primary, a local Eburu school.

RhinoArkhostswiderEburuconservationworkshop On 9th September 2014, Rhino Ark facilitated a stakeholders’ workshop in Naivasha to discuss the findings of the feasibility study of conserving the Wider Eburu Ecosystem. The study was commissioned by the Department of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing and guided by key stakeholders, including Rhino Ark. The study examined ways to secure the connectivity between Lake Naivasha and Eburu Forest, as well as between Eburu Forest and Eastern Mau Forest. The workshop brought together local landowners, government conservation institutions, local community representation and conservation NGO’s that are active in the area. Positive outcomes from the workshop included a resolution to establish three committees to address recommendations from the study with regard to wildlife corridors and dispersal areas as well as reforestation and sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Rhino Ark will continue to support the process through committee membership, facilitating the activities of the committees and providing secretariat services.

Fence Construction66 kilometres built as of 9th October 2014. The fence, which started at Kiringa River in Kirinyaga County has now passed Chogoria Forest Station in Tharaka Nithi County. A section of the fence along Chuka Forest has, however, been put on hold, as some members of the community claim to have a cultural/ancestral interest in the gazetted forest.

NanyukiBridgeofficiallycommissioned The Nanyuki Bridge that was rehabilitated with the support of the British Army Training Unit Kenya was officially commissioned by KFS Director David K. Mbugua on 24th April. Also present at the commissioning were the Deputy Commander, British Army Training Unit Kenya; Nyeri County Governor representative; Nyeri County Deputy Commissioner;

Rhino Ark Executive Director; KFS Head of Central Highlands Conservancy; KWS Assistant Director, Mountain Conservation Area; KWS Senior Warden, Mt. Kenya National Park/Reserve; KFS Ecosystem Conservator, Nyeri County. The bridge is the first among the eight key infrastructure components identified in Mt. Kenya and Aberdares to be rehabilitated with the support of BATUK. Rhino Ark is coordinating this support by BATUK.

SecondSuzukiMarutiprovidedtoMt.KenyaRhino Ark provided a second 4X4 Suzuki Maruti to Mt. Kenya National Park/National Reserve on 21st July. The vehicle is used by the KWS Warden in charge of the Chogoria Sector where Phase Two of the electric fence is currently being built. The vehicle aims to facilitate the overseeing of the building of the fence, as well as the engagement of the forest-adjacent communities in conservation. The first Suzuki Maruti was provided in April 2013 to the KWS Warden in charge of the Kamweti Sector where Phase One of the electric fence was completed earlier this year.

SurveillanceflightsaremakingpositiveimpactsonconservationRhino Ark conducted two surveillance flights above Mt. Kenya forest, together with KWS, KFS and Mount Kenya Trust (MKT) on 8th July and 14th October. The first flight covered the forest in the counties of Embu and Tharaka Nithi. Compared with a similar flight conducted on 15th October 2013, the flight revealed a major improvement in the forest located in Embu County where the fence has been completed. However, the situation in Tharaka Nithi, in particular Chuka forest, was worsening with an increase in illegal logging targeting especially Camphor trees. This section of the forest is not yet fenced. Following the flight, successful interventions were conducted by KWS and KFS, including the destruction of marijuana fields and the arrest of several individuals in relation to illegal logging and poaching. The second flight covered the forest located in the County of Kirinyaga. Two hotspot areas were detected. During the post-flight debrief, joint interventions were discussed and agreed upon.

RhinoArk&partnerssignagreementtobuildPhaseTwoofMt.KenyafenceRhino Ark signed a new agreement with four partners for the construction of the 60 kilometre long Phase Two of the Mt. Kenya Electric Fence. The agreement, through which funding to the tune of KES 172.7 million was committed, spells out all modalities for the financing and implementation of the construction of Phase Two. This Phase will cover the area between Thuchi River - on the boundary between Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties - and Thingithu River in Meru County.

The parties to the agreement are the Upper Tana Natural Resources Management Project, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service, Mount Kenya Trust and Rhino Ark. Fence adjacent communities will also be a key partner in the implementation of the fence project.

The Upper Tana Natural Resources Management Project (UTaNRMP) is a project of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a United Nations organization based in Rome.

Under the agreement, UTaNRMP will provide KES 118 million, Rhino Ark 27.2 million, KWS 23.7 million, Mount Kenya Trust 2.8 million and KFS 1 million.

PhaseI(53kilometres)oftheMt.KenyaElectricFencecompletedThe Final Post of the the 53 kilometre long Phase One of the Mt. Kenya Electric Fence was placed by H.E. Hon. Dorothy Muchungu, Deputy Governor of Embu County on 20th May 2014. NewfundingtoboosttheconservationoftheMountainBongoTogether with the Rare Species Conservatory Foundation and the Bongo Surveillance Programme, Rhino Ark has secured USD 100,000 (KES 8.9 million) towards the conservation of the critically endangered mountain bongo. The funds have been generously given by Mr. Kelley, an American philanthropist very active in the conservation movement.

The funding comes at a time when the Bongo Surveillance Programme is expanding its conservation activities to all mountain forest areas where the bongos are known to exist. These areas are subject to increasing human pressure.

The Bongo Surveillance Programme is also supported by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, Finlays Horticulture and Rare Species Conservatory Foundation, among others.

SurveillanceflighttriggeredstronginterventionsRhino Ark conducted two surveillance flights above the Aberdares together with KWS and KFS. The first flight covered the forest on the north-eastern slopes in Nyandarua County. This is a known hotspot area. Following the aerial surveillance, far-reaching interventions, including extensive operations on the ground leading to multiple arrests and some changes in management, were carried out. The second flight covered the forest located in the counties of Muranga and Kiambu. The flight revealed a very low level of illegal logging activities. There were, however, some issues observed that were discussed during the post-flight debrief.

AberdareFenceRelayRunflaggedbyFirstLadyofNyeriCountyThe First Lady of the County of Nyeri, H.E. Mrs. Margaret Gachaga flagged off the 5th edition of the Aberdare Fence Relay Run on 25th June. Also present included Aggrey Maumo, KWS Assistant Director, Jim Nyamu, Executive Director of the Elephant Neighbors Centre, Catherine Wambani, KWS Senior Warden of the Aberdare National Park, Christian Lambrechts, Executive Director of Rhino Ark. The purpose of the Run is to raise awareness among the youth living around the Aberdare ecosystem of the importance of conserving this critical water tower, which provides, among others, most of the drinking water for Nairobi and the urban centres located around the ecosystem. The Run also provides an opportunity to appreciate the benefits derived from the electric fence which has reduced tremendously human-wildlife conflicts around the Aberdares and assisted in curbing illegal activities in the forest.

600 children participated in the Aberdare FenceRelayRunThe Relay Run was completed on 11th July. The relay baton was received by the Nyeri Deputy County Commissioner Ngalia Ndaya during a fun-filled event at Bondeni in the Aberdare National Park. 600 children and 120 teachers from 60 primary schools participated in this year’s Run around the 400 km fenced Aberdare ecosystem. These schools were selected among 84 schools based on a conservation essay competition. In this year’s essay competition, the pupils were to write on what they can do to protect the Aberdare ecosystem and the fence, whilst the teachers on the threats to the Aberdare ecosystem and the fence, and discuss possible solutions.

NewfenceequipmentpilotedintheAberdaresA new type of fence energizer equipped with fence monitoring devices has been installed along one section of the Aberdare Electric Fence. The system provided by Gallagher is piloted on one of the most vulnerable sections of the fence. The system gives real-time information on the status of the fence, enabling the early detection of fence maintenance or security issues.

Medicaltrainingprovided to KWSandKFSrangers16 rangers from KFS and KWS have completed a three day intensive medical training from 13th to 15th August 2014. Provided by the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK), the training focussed on addressing medical emergencies that could arise during patrols conducted in Mt. Kenya, Aberdares and in Laikipia. The training is part of the collaboration established by Rhino Ark between KWS, KFS and BATUK.

New type of fence energizer on trial in the Aberdares

Examiningthefeasibilityofre-establishingthewildlifecorridorbetweenMt.KenyaandAberdaresRhino Ark joined KWS and Space for Giants in a meeting with the County Government of Nyeri to discuss the feasibility of re-establishing the wildlife corridor between Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares. The meeting set up a participatory process for the undertaking of an all - inclusive feasibility study. The meeting was followed by two flights with the Governor of Nyeri County and his senior advisers over the corridor.

The purposes of re-establishing the wildlife corridor are to: 1) mitigate human-wildlife conflicts; 2) generate opportunities for conservation-based economic activities in the County; 3) address the fragmentation of natural habitats located between Mt Kenya and Aberdares; 4) enable the natural migration of wildlife, in particular elephants, between the two mountains.

Two-thirds of the corridor is still being used by elephants coming from Mt. Kenya. Along their route to the Aberdares, elephants enter into conflict with community members, in particular farmers.

The County Government of Nyeri expressed strong commitment to the re-establishment of what they termed a “natural wonder”.

As part of the process to study the feasibility of the corridor, Rhino Ark, together with KWS and Space for Giant are compiling land information in the proposed corridor.
