THIDA MEP Newsletter August 2014 P5: Comic Books By Teacher Jade: This semester in MEP5 English, the students are writing their own comic books. I decided to give the students this project to motivate them to be creative with what they've learned in English, as well as engage them with something hands-on. I gave the students different genres, such as: mystery, adventure, horror, travel, comedy, and romance. For each genre students were given different vocabulary words to use. Students writing mystery comic books were given the words “suspect” and “evidence,” while students writing about romance were given the words “romantic” and “fall in love.” In addition to using the given vocabulary, the students need to draw pictures for each of the 10 pages of their comic as well as have perfect English. While the students write, I help them correct their mistakes and provide them with good ways to express their ideas. I'm very excited to read and see what the students are able to create. I hope that they're excited as well! Teacher Spotlight Jade Church Teaches: P5 MEP From: Miami, Florida, USA Age: 31 Before teaching in Thailand: I taught English in South Korea. P4 Science: Cells!

By: Teacher Eric

In P4, we are studying about plants and animals in science class this semester. We learned about plant and animal cells and got to do something new and exciting this year as part of those lessons.

This year the MEP program has microscopes to use in science classes. The students were really excited to use these! First, the students learned about microscope parts and how to use them. Next, we all looked at some microscope slides to see some plant and animal cells up close. We viewed the slides at 4x, 10x, and 40x magnification. This let the students see many cells grouped together and also look at cell parts very close-up.

They really enjoyed using the microscopes and they were amazed at the cells!

By: Teacher Adeline

This month we have all been very excited for one thing: the MEP English Camp in Phuket! We have a very full and exciting schedule, which includes visiting Lam Promthep and Chinoportuguse part of the city. We will also watch the bird show at Bird’s Paradise, before going to visit the beautiful Wat Chaiyatharam. On Sunday, we will go to Phuket Aquarium, Central Festival and the Dairyhut Farm.

But best of all, we have the English Camp! The English teachers have lots of fun activities planned for the day, including face painting, English songs, tongue-twisters and great games. The theme is Under the Sea, so be prepared for waves of fun. It’s going to be great!
