RSS Assessment Plan for 2020/2021
• Have more time and space to deepen their learning,
especially in the transition years
(i.e. P3, P5, S1 and S3).
• Better enjoy the process of learning and develop
dispositions for lifelong learning.
These changes aim to help our students:
Subject-Based Banding (P4 to P5)
• Subject-based banding (SBB) gives your child the opportunity to take a combination of subjects at standard and foundation levels based on their strengths.
• Students can take a mix of standard and foundation subjects through SBB at P5 and P6. Foundation subjects are generally less demanding as compared to standard subjects.
• This would allow students to:
– Stretch their potential in subjects they are strong in.
– Build up their understanding in subjects they need more help with.
How does subject-based banding work?

continue taking HCL in P6.

FOUNDATION LEVEL SUBJECT GRADES TO BE LESS FINELY DIFFERENTIATED
Under the new AL system, to reduce fine differentiation among
students, Foundation subject grades will be graded in 3 scoring
bands from AL A to C.
Like Standard subject ALs, the Foundation subject ALs will reflect a
student’s level of achievement, rather than how they have
performed relative to their peers.

FOUNDATION LEVEL SUBJECT GRADES
For the purpose of S1 posting, Foundation level AL A to AL C will be
mapped to AL 6 to AL 8 of Standard level subjects respectively, to
derive a student’s overall PSLE Score.
Similar to the current PSLE scoring system, this mapping is based
on the learning and assessment load of the subjects, and informs
students of their readiness to access the curriculum at the
secondary level.

PSLE Scoring (2021)
SCORING OF FOUNDATION SUBJECTS FOR S1 POSTING
A student’s PSLE Score is the sum of the four AL scores across
his/her Standard and Foundation subjects.
Students taking Foundation subjects are eligible for the Express
Course, as long as they meet the course placement criteria.
With Full Subject-based Banding in secondary schools, students may
also take subjects at a higher level for those that they are strong in.

HCL POSTING ADVANTAGE (PSLE)
52
53
Should my child take up HCL from P5?
• Does he/she have an interest and a flair for CL?
• Does he/she plan to take HCL in secondary school?
• Is he/she coping well in EL, MA, SC, CL? Or should he/she be spending more time on these subjects?
54
What is the impact on my child’s learning if I choose HCL for my child when it is not recommended by the school?
• HCL provides more in-depth learning, and with a greater emphasis on comprehension and writing
• Aptitude and interest are important for child to enjoy learning HCL
• Additional 2 periods of HCL lessons are conducted after school from 2 pm to 3 pm on Monday (2020) *Attendance is compulsory for students who are taking HCL
• Child must be able to cope with the additional curriculum demands of HCL

We want to build a culture of care in which students
are safe, enjoy coming to school, are engaged in
learning and motivated to give their best.
Culture of care
Support for learning
Students with learning needs and who require more specialized interventions are supported by the Allied Educator (Learning and Behaviour Support).
Such interventions may include in-class or withdrawal support, small-group remediation and specialized training or support in life skills, as well as transition support.
* If you require assistance, please contact your child’s Form Teacher.
The AEDs are trained to conduct informal assessment and interventions and to process referral for formal assessment by the MOE Education Psychologist or REACH Team.
Emotional Safety
Your child’s emotional safety is also important tous. We hope to build positive relationships amongpeers and positive relationships between teachersand students.
Sometimes children and their families might need extra support if they are finding it difficult to manage their emotions, behaviour or relationships with peers , teachers or even parents.
The School Counsellor offers support to help students to work out their social, emotional and behavioural issues.

What can I do to support my child in his/her journey in
RSS?
Our partnership to support the whole child
Our children do best when schools and parentswork hand in hand to support them.
Develop good habits
It is important to nurture your child to be a self-directedlearner with good habits and who takes responsibility forhis/her own learning.
• Students are responsible for copying down the day’s homework and to hand in their work on time
• Students need to learn how to manage their time and various commitments
Build responsibility
Homework can: • reinforce learning and deepen understanding of
lessons taught;• allow students to regularly practise, and apply
skills and concepts taught;• develop good study skills and habits;• encourage greater ownership and responsibility
for independent learning.
Completing Homework
How parents can partner the school
• Create a home environmentconducive for studying and thecompletion of homework
• Reinforce good study habits andattitudes
• Set a practice at home for yourchild to show your periodicallyhis/her homework progress
• Supervise and provide support forchild’s learning
How parents can partner the school

Managing Screen Time
Smart Devices are here to stay. They are addictiveand interfere with relationships. Guidelines areimperative for the development of healthy mindsand habits.
It is important for our children to be able to work and communicate well with others.
Relating to others
How parents can partner the school
• Work with the teachers to help your childrespect differences and resolve disagreementsamicably
• Let the school establish the facts in any incidentto ensure a fair, objective outcome for allparties
• Don’t react. Don’t jump to conclusions.
• Attention - Listen to your child first.
• Reflection - Encourage them to share how they felt.
• Independence - Ask about what he/she can do to prevent/avoid occurrence next time.
• Follow up - If need arises, check with the teacher. Allow teacher to follow up pertaining to the issues.
Working Out Issues with your child
It is important to develop and strengthen mutual understanding, respect and trust between the school and parents for the benefit of your child.
Regular Communication
How parents can partner the school
• Work with the school to know and support your child• Update the form teacher immediately on matters
relating to your child’s well-being • Have regular conversations with teachers in both
academic and non-academic areas – this will help you guide your child’s development
• Check the teachers’ preferred mode of communication – teachers are not required to share their mobile numbers
• Understand that at times teachers may not be able torespond to your queries immediately
Let’s work together for the future of our
children!
How do we define success for our children? What do we really want for our children?
