31Thank you
The Rhino Charge continues its record breaking fund raising streak.
Since 2010, new Rhino Charge fundraise records have been made year-
in year-out from KES 72 million in 2010 to KES 108 million in 2015,
representing an annual average increase of 8%. This is the outcome of
the dedication of an extraordinary team of volunteers under the strong
leadership of Rhino Charge Committee Chairman David Lowe, as well
as the tireless commitment by the Rhino Chargers and their many
supporters. Equally impressive is the support of our sponsors providing
cash and in-kind contributions, for tentage satellite and mobile
communications, fuel security, and medivac support, to mention a
few. This broad support helps us minimize the cost of organizing this
extreme event, held in some of Kenya’s most remote wilderness areas,
to a small fraction of what it would otherwise cost, with the bulk of
the expenses spent on the host community’s preparation of the venue.
Our sincere thanks to this wonderful army of volunteer that makes it
all possible.
The funds raised through the Rhino Charge not only ensure a smooth
and continuous running of Rhino Ark operations, but also help
leverage additional funding for the implementation of our expanded
conservation portfolio. On average for every shilling raised by the
Rhino Charge, at least one and a half shillings are raised from other
sources towards our projects.
As part of the consolidation of our conservation portfolio, much
attention has been given over the past six months to the maintenance
of our fences and the management of the fence gates. Improved fence
maintenance and reporting procedures have been implemented on Mt.
Kenya and Eburu and are being introduced to the Aberdares. Lockable
metallic gates have been built along our new fences in Mt. Kenya and
Eburu and the manning of these gates has been strengthened. The
fencing work in Mt. Kenya is proceeding at a steady pace, with over
90km of fence already completed. At the same time, good progress has
been made in the rehabilitation of Phase I of the Aberdare Fence with
16 km completed.
Our aerial surveillance programme is now well established in Mt.
Kenya and Aberdares and has been extended to South Western Mau
Forest Reserve under a partnership agreement with the Netherlands-
based Sustainable Trade Initiative and Finlays.
The connectivity with, and between the mountain forest ecosystems
where we operate has been given greater focus. The wildlife corridor
between Eburu and Lake Naivasha is being secured and is attracting
positive interest from neighbouring farms. In the central highlands,
the engagement with the region’s leaders on the proposed corridor
between Mt. Kenya and Aberdares has been successful and the project
is gaining momentum.

This year’s UK Rhino Charge was again held at Slindon Safari 4x4 Centre near Arundel in West Sussex. Glorious weather allowed competitors, supporters and officials to enjoy themselves to the full and the deep and well filled mudholes were not so unpleasant in the sunshine! A braai was organised by South African supporter Andrew Strange on the Saturday evening and raised additional funds so the total came to £3325.17 after the event had finished. Not massive but UK supporters hope that every little helps as there are many calls on charitable donations in the UK at the moment.
Competition was intense between the teams with the varied sections allowing different teams to do better at different types of task and the points were close at the end with Ian Purcell just coming out on top after concentrating hard all day. Dash Patel showed his off-road skills off in the more open sections but had trouble on the tighter stages. The girls from Spearmint Rhino added a touch of colour to the day and may have distracted some drivers! All in all a great fun event.

TEAM OLE CHODA;
WILD FOR WILDLIFEBy Manee Choda
Team Ole Choda’s foray into the Rhino Charge begun in 1989 when we went to the first Charge as spectators, curious about this off road event -though we never thought that we would really be a part of it. The American Ambassador at the time came to our caravan campsite one evening and convinced us to take part the following year and from there my cousin Billy Choda and I embarked on a journey that has never really ended!
Our first car, car number 2, was a Nissan Petrol lovingly named “JONGA” that we built from scratch at our second hand spares workshop. The Charge for us was and still is a fun, weekend away. It is an opportunity to get together with friends and family in some of Kenya’s finest bush whilst at the same time competing with some very talented off road drivers. My first few Charges were with Billy Choda and a few other friends in JONGA. My boys would come along for the camping (not to mention the after party) experience. I recall after one particular Charge held at a farm, my excited boys got into the Charge car and decided to go on a mini Charge of their own. Shortly after, we were summoned and admonished for “breaking the water pipes” at the farm. The committee at the time told us we would be banned from taking part in any future Charges because of this. Fortunately, for us we received a letter from the owner of the Farm stating that no damage had been done, it was all part of some grand misunderstanding and we were “let of the hook”. Boy did we get lucky else, that would
have been the sad demise of my Charging years!
Thereafter I had no choice but to tame my wild boys and let them release their adrenalin by incorporating them into the team. That was twenty years ago and we are still going strong together as a father/son team! In addition, the team consists of my nephew, another runner and a navigator – several of which have changed in the past few years. One of the earlier navigators we had was told to make sure he kept close to Alan McKittrick’s team, as we knew they were a winning team. He threw his books on the table and said “if you don’t think I am good enough, why do you bring navigators?”- Needless to say we did zero controls that year and instead ended up at the border of Somalia. Our wives had
to send rescue choppers to save us (quite the Hollywood scene)! We learnt two valuable lessons during that Charge. Always trust your instincts and more importantly, get a navigator who really knows what he is doing! The team that has finally become Team Ole Choda today consists of:
• ManeeChoda-DriverakaCarbreaker• NiccoloAmsellem-Navigator-fondly referred to as our “zig zag” man• SandevChoda-Windfinder(RedIndian)• HoneyChoda-Rockmover(he’sbuiltlike one too!)• KakeyVirdi-Pathfinder• SachinChoda-Chiefengineer–CoolCat Our car, No. 6 to date after the JONGA is a Toyota Land Cruiser VX -fully modified with a Volvo undercarriage.
When, as a team we look back over the years trying to recollect our experiences there are some remarkable things that we have been through. From breaking propeller shafts, breaking the steering rack, not to mention winching the car out of the most impossible situations. We have been through Charges where we have broken the springs in the car and used our winch to hold the car together. One particular Charge stands out where seven cars were stuck behind each other on a narrow cliff and two cars had already rolled. We came along and realised that if we waited for them to move, we would never have finished and would have run out of time. So I decided to drive the car straight down the hill and used the trees and rocks as my breaking leverage. With hindsight it was one of the craziest
RhinoCharge

things I have done in the Rhino Charge to date - my navigator said I had “BALLS OF STEEL”…we finished sixth that year! In yet another Charge, we had to plug the radiator using a stick from a tree to stop it from leaking. That is what we love. Getting creative in the bush and using the surrounding environment to our advantage! - IT’S ALL ABOUT BUNDU BASHING. The beauty of this event is never knowing what to expect. Even whilst the grapevine, ever alive is throwing speculation about the venue and teams meet to discuss terrain and tactics we have, from the past learnt that we will only know what to do when we are actually in the Charge! I am certain that all the veteran teams can attest to the same philosophy. As the sun rises on the day of the Charge we all get ready for battle. But before any battle starts we all gather at the mess tent. From the cooks to helpers, supporters, family members, we hold hands and bow our heads for a prayer.
Experience is your greatest ally when out in the bush. One of our most exciting moments during a recent Charge was when we arrived at a lugga, which only had one way out. Unfortunately, for us, a car was stuck there and refused to move slightly so we could pass through. Time was ticking, we could see the coveted checkpoint ahead of us and our supporters were chanting away. We had to make a call. We had no choice but to climb up a steep hill, hoping that we would have enough power to make it up - which of course we did not. During the climb, the exhaust pipe got stuck in the mud in the bank and as there was no backpressure, the engine started smoking up. Thick, black plumes of smoke rose to the sky and everyone jumped out of the car shouting “FIRE” assuming we were going up in flames. This is where experience and knowledge kicks in. I was certain there was no fire as diesel cars do not light up so easily. After ignoring the many pleas to get out of the vehicle I managed to let the car roll back gently and as the smoke calmed down and the boys realised what I was thinking, the atmosphere relaxed not just for us but everyone around us and we got a grip of the situation. We realised there was a tree - albeit
small covered in NGOJA KIDOGOS, nearby and managed with a little more effort and to the merry tune of our supporters chanting our song ‘OLE OLE OLE OLE CHODDAAA’ to finally winch our way out of the lugga. We did however break the back diff and suffered from engine problems throughout the Charge. However, we are tough cowboys, and a tough team. Despite the drama, we still managed to finish ninth that year! And let’s face it, where’s the fun without the drama!
The Rhino Charge is one tough event. Yet we revel in the excitement of not knowing what lies ahead of us. It is about team spirit and understanding not to mention trusting each member of your team. A bond is forged amongst you when you are out there. You work on pure adrenalin and instinct and you take the good along with the bad together, as one. Knowing that there are hot pies awaiting you at “PIES TO GO” (always a luxury when
as we finished third with a lot of “matata” as usual. At one point we landed in a ditch as we had no front runner due to the thick bush… dismayed we thought that’s it…the end of the Charge for us until one of us spotted yet another tree nearby.. (Bless Mother Nature) and we winched our way out of trouble. 2015 was also the ONLY Charge we have completed without breaking the windscreen in the first ten minutes and without having to go under the car to see what trouble was brewing! Coming third with over one hour to spare before the Charge was over was a milestone. Perhaps we should have used the time to take straighter lines!!
After 26 years of charging and finally coming a coveted third, we almost lost our entry for 2016. The whole team over slept the day the entries opened. Indeed, that was the most expensive sleep we have had giving us four million reasons to win next year!!
you get to start at that control) and ice cream and cold showers at HARDY, and much more from the other controls keeps the team going through the day.
Speaking of Team spirit - our camp manager Manu Bricoult always found us beautiful spots where he would set up our camp in luxury every year. Hot showers after the Charge make us feel human again charging us to party the night away.
Our chief Chef Kaku Choda replaces the lost calories from a hard day challenge and our wives massage our sore feet!
Every Charge is a different experience. Every year brings new challenges and with each Charge we have only one goal in mind – winning! Rhino Charge 2015 was exceptional
The Rhino Charge now runs in our blood. Apart from the challenge of driving and the coming together of friends and family, this sport supports such an incredible cause. Protecting our precious environment and water catchment areas is of paramount importance and we as TEAM OLE CHODA are proud to be associated with it as we look forward to our 27th year of RHINO CHARGING IN 2016!
It comes to an end so quickly that it feels unreal. As we say our goodbyes to each other and make our way back home. Its a really good feeling knowing that we had the most amazing experience ever and next year it will be bigger, better and full of new memories. LETS KEEP UP THE SPIRIT OF THE CHARGE!! CHEERS

THE RHINO ARK CHARITABLE TRUSTINCOME AND EXPENDITURE ACCOUNT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2015
ExcErpts from rhino Ark chAritAblE trust Accounts for thE YEAr EndEd 31 mArch 2015
1. SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
The principal accounting policies adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below: (a) Basis of preparation The financial statements summarise the transactions of the Trust and deal with the net assets at the disposal of the trustees. The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost basis of accounting.
(b) Income recognition Donations and Rhino Charge collections are recognised on receipt. Investment income is recognised on accrual basis.
(c) Property and equipment Items of property and equipment are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation. Depreciation is charged on the straight line basis over the estimated useful lives of the assets. The annual depreciation rates in use are:
Motor vehicles 25.0% Furniture and fittings 12.5% Computers 33.3% Office equipment 12.5%
(d) Foreign currency Transactions during the year are converted into Kenya Shillings at the rates ruling at the transaction dates. Assets and liabilities at the reporting date, which are expressed in foreign currencies, are translated at the rates ruling at that date. The resulting differences from conversion and translation are dealt with in the income and expenditure account.
(e) Financial instruments A financial instrument is a contract that gives rise to both a financial asset of one enterprise and a financial liability of another enterprise. The financial instruments held by the Trust are investments in the money market, trade and other receivables, bank balances and cash and trade and other payables.
All the financial instruments held by the Trust are accounted for on amortised cost basis.
(f) Receivables Receivables are stated at nominal value, less provision for any amounts considered irrecoverable.
(g) Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and in hand and short term deposits with an original maturity of three months or less.
(h) Use of estimates The preparation of financial statements requires that management makes estimates and assumptions that affect amounts reported in the financial statements and accompanying notes. Actual results could differ from these estimates. The more significant estimation process is related to the determination of provision for doubtful debts. Although some variability is inherent in these estimates, management believes that the amounts provided are adequate.

The year 2014-2015 was marked by major milestones in our major new projects in Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu which commenced in the financial year 2012-2013. It was also the third year of continued strong consolidation of Rhino Ark’s expanded programmeIt was also one of continued support both from thousands of donors to the annual Rhino Charge, direct corporate donations and a significant injection of value support from the Kenya Government of materials for Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu fencing projects.Whilst the Mt. Kenya and Mau Eburu were at the centre of our current & forward planning and funding in the
year, the Aberdare Fence, Rhino Ark’s flagship project, remained a major focus of funds disbursement for its maintenance. It has taken Rhino Ark 25 years to build and successfully assist in the daily running of what is recognized as East Africa’s longest wildlife conservation fence. Last year, Rhino Ark began the rehabilitation of the Phase I of the electric fence, along the Eastern Salient of the National Park. The 38-kilometre phase that was completed in 1992 has now outlived its intended lifespan. The rehabilitation will extend the fence lifespan by another 20 years. This expresses the long-term commitment of Rhino Ark to the conservation of the Aberdare ecosystem and to providing sustainable solutions to the challenges facing Kenya’s water towers.
Overallfunds2014/15The total funds raised during the financial year under review were KShs 224.6 million.Despite the difficult economic times, the 2014 Rhino Charge exceeded expectations and raised at field audit a total of KShs 101 million or just above US$ 1.2 million. Gross donations incorporating Rhino Charge and corporates amounted to KShs 145 million. The Kenya Treasury was our major donor providing KShs 79.8 million for fence materials and managed through our fence construction partner, KWS. As those funds were not channelled through our accounts, they are not reflected in our balance sheets, although they are earmarked in support of our fence projects in Mt. Kenya and Mau Mt. Eburu. Every kilometre of fence built under the partnership agreements with KWS specifies that materials are provided by Treasury funds, whilst Rhino Ark’s inputs include payments to personnel for each completed kilometre of fence, vehicles, machinery, fuel, tools and mobile housing. In addition both KWS and Rhino Ark commit management time for constant supervision and issues resolution with communities along the pre-planned fence alignment. In addition, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources provided over KShs 5 million in support of the Feasibility Study on the Conservation of the Wider Eburu Forest Ecosystem through the Establishment and Management of the Wildlife Corridors and Dispersal Areas which has been recently completed.
Corporate/conservationbodiessupportCorporate and consensual grant supporters continued positively. I would like to acknowledge the following organisations that have made generous contributions:•FinlaysfordonatingKShs4.4millionforthefencingofMauMt.Eburuand providing specific fund support for various entries to the annual Rhino Charge.•MpesaFoundationfordonatingKShs20millionforfencingMauMt.Eburu. This is part of the KShs 155 million pledged by Mpesa Foundation in support of the conservation of that ecosystem.
MauMt.EburuconservationandfencingprojectwellunderwayThe construction of the 43.3 Kms perimeter wildlife proof electrified fence was commenced on 14th March 2013 and was completed in November 2014. One Energizer House was built during the year under review. The fence will protect 8,715 hectares of indigenous forest within the Mau Forests Complex Water Tower. The Mpesa Foundation’s support together with that of Finlays, the Kenyan Government and of Rhino Ark core funding helps develop a fully rounded ecosystem conservation process for Mau Mt. Eburu. It includes completion of the fence, development of community-based natural resources management projects, forest rehabilitation and an anchor funding of KShs 25 million for an endowment fund to be managed by a trust similar to the Aberdare Trust.
CompletionofPhaseOneofMt.KenyaElectricFenceThe construction of the Mt. Kenya fence was launched on 7th September 2012. The length of the fence will be approximately 450Kms long and will protect over 2,500 square kilometres of pristine forest. The fenced area will include the Mt. Kenya
National Park and the surrounding forests which were enlisted by UNESCO in 1997 as a World Heritage Site.As at the May 2015, 80 Kms of Phase II of the Mt. Kenya Electric Fence was completed. However, construction of a section of Phase Two of the Mt. Kenya Fence in Chuka had been suspended. In April 2014, some members of the community claimed to have a cultural/ancestral interest in the gazetted forest reserve and petitioned the High Court in Meru to stop activity in that forest including fencing. Rhino Ark, as a respondent challenged that the fence is a human/wildlife conflict management tool and not a boundary marker, and as such does not interfere with any alleged interest in the forest. In his ruling of 18th December 2014, the High Court Judge recognized the benefits of the fence and allowed Rhino Ark and its partners to build the fence along Chuka Forest boundary. In February, fence construction started in Chuka Forest. The cost of this legal action is just under KShs 5 million and has been booked in the financial statements.
TheGeneralFundThe general fund as reflected in the statement of financial position has been split into two categories namely: Fence Maintenance Reserve and Fence Construction Reserve. Twenty percent of each year’s Rhino Charge donation is allocated specifically for maintenance of fence already constructed. This ensures that the huge amount of effort and money put into the conservation programme does not collapse from lack of maintenance. The maintenance reserve is therefore to earmark these funds for maintenance and not used for construction. The fence construction reserve deficit has increased from KShs 44 million to KShs 61 million. This situation is expected to reverse during the current year. The fence maintenance reserve surplus increased during the year from KShs 103 million to KShs 120 million.
BongoSurveillanceProgramme(BSP)successesThe Bongo programme continues apace, thanks to a dedicated band of conservation individuals who constantly seek fund support from a variety of donors. Some of the funds go direct to the BSP whilst Rhino Ark secured funds from AFEW (The Giraffe Centre) of KShs 1,415,700 during the year and which form part of a two year commitment totaling KShs 4 million to support BSP in South Western Mau and Mau Mt. Eburu. The funds go towards collecting vital information about the Bongo, patrols, removal of snares and spear traps, as well as to the dynamic Bongo wildlife schools outreach programmes under BSP.US$ 5,000 and US$ 51,000 was also received during the year from Rare Species Conservatory Foundation and Brad Kelley respectively towards the BSP. In addition to the funding mentioned above from Finlays, a further Bongo support was provided by Finlays for the South Western Mau region during the year.
OtherinitiativesWe have continued to provide additional management support to our partners, KFS and KWS and Mount Kenya Trust, by arranging aerial surveillance of the forests of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares to identify illegal activities within these two mountains. We are also coordinating the support by the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) to KWS and KFS in the Mt. Kenya/Aberdare area. This support includes provision of training and the rehabilitation of key infrastructure in both mountain ecosystems.Together with the County Government of Nyeri, KWS, Space for Giants and Mount Kenya Trust, we are exploring the feasibility of securing a wildlife corridor between Mt. Kenya and Aberdares. At the same time, we have spearheaded the implementation of the Feasibility Study on the Conservation of the Wider Eburu Forest Ecosystem starting with the wildlife corridor between Eburu Forest and Lake Naivasha.
ThousandstothankRhino Ark has an enormous following both in Kenya and now greatly developed overseas as well. Much of the fund raise focuses upon the annual Rhino Charge where individual car entrants make substantial pledges and raise even more than their pledge each year. It is a grass roots conservation thrust within Kenyan society that has now developed a deep foundation. Every donor knows that Rhino Ark’s ventures are to secure the nation’s precious ‘water towers’ and to work in partnership with the government to ensure good governance for maximum benefits. The 2011 Environmental Assessment triggered by Rhino Ark and with support from UNEP and the East African Wildlife Society’s Kenya Forests Working Group (KFWG) has placed a value on the Aberdares alone at KShs 59 billion annually in goods/services (water being the most important) and in biodiversity benefits. It is always difficult to single out thanks in a report like this. Rhino Ark Charitable Trust has thousands of donors in Kenya and friends overseas who support our home grown and home driven conservation initiative.
I thank all of you for your generous support. I wish to especially thank the Rhino Charge Committee and the huge band of volunteers who yearly give so much time, thought, ideas and energy to running this unique event.

ThirdfenceenergizerhousecompletedConstruction of the third Eburu fence energizer house has now been completed. The structure, located atop Ngobobo Hill next to the KFS fire lookout tower, houses the power system for a section of the 43.3 kilometer fence. It also acts as the physical store for fence maintenance materials and tools and is the residence for the fence maintenance staff responsible for the sector of fence around the easternmost part of the Eburu Forest boundary. It is a crucial element of the fence infrastructure. The technical committee for the fence project carried out a final inspection of the house on 9 June 2015 and confirmed the unit as practically completed. The ‘fire tower’ energizer house is the final such structure built for this purpose.
EburufencegatescompletedThe completion of the Eburu fence has now been complemented by the construction of lockable metallic gates for each of the designated access points into the forest. A total of 10 gates have been built as follows: (1) Crater Gate (Fire Tower, Eburru); (2) Eburu Main Gate (Eburru); (3) Keringet Gate (Songoloi, Eburru); MPESA Foundation Gate (Ole Sirwa, Ol Jorai); (4) Morop Gate (Morop, Ol Jorai); (5) Kahuho Gate (Kahuho, Kiambogo); (6) Olomunyi Gate (Centre One, Ndabibi); (8) Oltepesi Gate (Ndabibi); (9) Ndabibi Gate (Ndabibi); and (10) Naitolia Gate (Ndabibi). The 6-metre wide gates have been built to standard specifications based on a design prepared by Kenya Wildlife Service with inputs from Kenya Forest Service and Rhino Ark, and comprise a vehicle gate plus a pedestrian side gate. For durability, the gates are mounted on well-anchored concrete pillars. The gates, together with the fence, will provide the Eburu Forest management (Kenya Forest Service) with full control of human access into the forest. It is anticipated that this will greatly increase the potential for revenue collection and curbing illegal activities in the forest.

Eastern summit trail view point overlooking Lake Naivasha
EburutrailsandfeaturesmappinggatherspaceTowards fully documenting the unique nature trails and features of Eburu, three new trails have been reviewed between May and October 2015 by Rhino Ark, with support from local community guides. The Oljoro Lenkororo spring trail is a 2.2km long trail in the central part of the forest. It follows a path along a ridge that skirts the precipitous ‘Deep Valley’ gorge, winds through stands of stately podo, majestic Prunus Africana and thick bamboo. The trail terminates at a natural spring that feeds into the Ndabibi River. Another trail is the Litatano Spring trail, a 3 kilometre long route that the leads from the Kahuho area in the North Western part of the forest towards the high peaks of the western summit of Mount Eburu. The trail ends at the Litatano spring that has long sustained wildlife and the local community from the Kahuho area.
The Eastern Summit trail circuit is a 5.1km long nature hike that offers wildlife and bird viewing opportunities. It begins, deep inside the forest, at an elevation of 2,571 metres. The trail ascends for 3.5km through a mix of forest tree species, and features a 1.5 km long section of pristine bamboo forest above 2,700 metres. The 2,841 metre high summit offers a panoramic view of the wider Eburu ecosystem landscape. From the summit, a 1.6km long descent ends at the Eburu Forest station along the forest’s eastern boundary.

EburufencemaintenancesystemtakesshapeFollowing the completion of fence construction in November 2014, the focus now shifts to establishment of long term fence maintenance systems. Towards this, Rhino Ark, together with Kenya Forest Service conducted the training of the 11 fence attendants and the fence supervisor that carry out maintenance of the Eburu Electric Fence. The training covered the maintenance routine and reporting system. This system is derived from the enhanced practices in the management of electric fences developed in year 2014 by Rhino Ark, Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forest Service, based on a review of 25 years of fence maintenance experience in the Aberdares and the lessons learned from Ol Pejeta Conservancy. In addition, a reporting system has been set up to collect daily data on the functioning of the fence and the maintenance work carried out by the fence attendants. To facilitate the supervision work, Kenya Forest Service has provided a motorcycle to the fence supervisor.
WildlifecorridorprojectaddresseswildlifewaterneedsbytappingsteamTowards securing the wildlife corridor between Eburu Forest and Lake Naivasha, Rhino Ark, together with KWS, KFS and Loldia Farm, is establishing a water point inside Eburu Forest. The lack of surface water in the eastern part of Eburu Forest has been a limiting factor to wildlife residing in the forest, forcing wildlife to stay near the lake shore and increasing wildlife pressure on Lake Naivasha riparian land.
The water point currently being built will help to address this situation. It consists of a shallow trough that will be fed by water tapped and piped from a nearby geothermal steam jet and cooling system built for this purpose. A small secondary trough to cater for small wildlife is also included in the design, which was developed by KWS based on their experiences in other wildlife areas. The main trough outer rim measures 0.6 metres width to hold the water and spans a 6 metre wide inner diameter. The works commenced in September 2015.

EburuteachersattendconservationeducationworkshopsRhino Ark’s ongoing conservation education (CE) outreach initiative in Eburu moved up a gear with the hosting of a series of four 1-day workshops for teachers from Eburu schools. The local workshops were held at each of the four administrative locations adjacent to Eburu Forest, namely Eburru, Ndabibi, Kiambogo and Ol Jorai from 16 to 19 September 2015. They were attended by a total of 72 participants, comprising teachers and officers from the Ministry of Education and Kenya Wildlife Service. Nakuru County was also well represented by the Executive for Environment, Natural Resources, Energy and Water, Dr. Richard Rop. The workshops were organized and facilitated by Rhino Ark.
The voluntary CE programme was introduced to 31 primary and secondary schools around the Eburu ecosystem in January 2014, with teachers in the schools provided with curriculum books developed by an expert team facilitated by Rhino Ark. The workshop series aimed to bring together the front line teachers who are teaching the curricula in schools, to provide them with a forum to share their experiences and challenges in the CE process, and to comment on the curricula.
NewbongosightinginEburuForestThe Rhino Ark supported Bongo Surveillance Programme (BSP) is continuing to carry out conservation work in Eburu Forest. An important BSP task is the determination of areas inhabited by bongo, within Eburu’s densely forested, steep-sided valleys. This information helps to guide the conservation interventions that provide better protection for this shy, critically endangered species. The BSP team places trap cameras in potential bongo areas, which automatically capture images of any passing animals. One such camera was placed at a ridge in the central part of the mountain just below and to the south of the towering Western Summit. In August 2015, the BSP retrieved photographs from this camera that contained an image of a bongo. This exciting find has now confirmed that bongo inhabit the area, which is referred to by the locals as “Mlima Tatu”, and will provide a basis for further review.
Schools’treenurseriesprojectkicksoffAs part of the Eburu schools conservation education programme, Rhino Ark is supporting the establishment of nine model tree nurseries in selected schools around Eburu Forest. Each nursery will feature a chain-link fence enclosed and shaded 100 x 100 foot area with two 10,000 litre water tanks, stone seed beds, and the full complement of nursery management tools and equipment. An initial stock of certified indigenous and exotic tree species seeds will be provided for each nursery. This initiative aims to provide pupils in the schools with a hands-on understanding of agroforestry as part of the overall conservation education process. The teaching staff and pupils will receive regular mentoring and technical support from Rhino Ark’s community outreach coordinator in collaboration with Kenya Forest Service. The nurseries will also provide the schools with a revenue generating opportunity through the sale of quality tree seedlings.
The first two nurseries, in Emmanuel Primary and Ndabibi Primary schools, respectively, are in the final stages of construction and slated to commence operations in November 2015.

Mt. Kenya Ecosystem
SurveillanceflightabovethewesternslopesofMt.KenyasuccessfullyconductedRhino Ark, together with Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service and Mount Kenya Trust, carried out a surveillance flight above the forest of Mt. Kenya located in Nyeri County. This is a large area that covers most of the western slopes of Mt. Kenya spanning from Karatina to Nanyuki.
The flight revealed a very low level of illegal activities, with no charcoal kiln found across the entire area. This represents a major improvement since 1999 when the aerial survey of Mt. Kenya Forest was conducted. Two logging sites were recorded and interventions to address them were agreed upon during the debriefing that followed the flight. In the week that followed this flight, KFS mounted an operation on the two logging site areas and arrested one suspect.

The area which has been under severe threats from illegal logging and bush meat, was found relatively quieter. However charcoal kilns, illegal logging, snaring and unlicensed firewood collection were observed in several places. All charcoal kilns found were destroyed, snares removed and several arrests were made.AJSU is a joint KWS-KFS-Rhino Ark initiative to engage forest-adjacent communities in conservation. It is financed by Rhino Ark.
Aberdares Ecosystem
6theditionoftheAberdareSchoolsFenceRelayRunflaggedoffandcompletedOn 3rd July 2015, the Chief of Staff of the County of Nyeri flagged off the Aberdare Schools Fence Relay Run, a well-attended and fun day event.
Approximately 600 children and 120 teachers from 60 schools participated in the Run around the 400 km fenced Aberdare ecosystem. These schools were selected among 94 schools based on a conservation essay competition. In this year’s essay competition, the pupils were to write on the joy to live next to the Aberdare ecosystem and it’s Electric Fence.
The purpose of the Run is to have the schools that neighbour the Aberdare Fence to take part in a relay race around the Aberdare ecosystem. The final relay baton was received by the First Lady of the County of Nyeri during a fun-filled event at Bondeni in the Aberdare National Park. Also Present at the event was Miss Tourism, Nyeri County.
The Run aims at raising awareness among the youth living around the Aberdare ecosystem of the importance of conserving this critical water tower, which provides, among others, most of the drinking water for Nairobi and the urban centres located around the ecosystem. The Run also provides an opportunity to appreciate the benefits derived from the electric fence which has tremendously reduced human-wildlife conflicts around the Aberdares and assisted in curbing illegal activities in the forest.
A big thank you to the children, teachers, County Governments, local administration and Kenya Wildlife Service for a successful Run.
