PROJECTAIMS harbour’s vibrant urban life with strong place identity
?This project is about:Designing a attractive, vibrant and economic profitable mixed-use development in Scheveningen Harbour, along with new public transport connection from The Hague. This project mainly deals with accessibility with public transport on city scale and harbour area, as well as spatial quality on harbour area.

TIME LINE project course for the next six months
No. Activity Methodology1 Theoretical Framework
2 Analysis on City Scale3 Preliminary Spatial Planning4 Choosing the Most Suitable
Combination (LRT+BRT)5 Assessment and Comparison with
Municipality's PlanInterview with Rob van Nes (Traffic Engineer); analysis and calculation on spatial and economic impacts, as well as Scheveningen's accessibilitylevel
6 Design Execution in Harbour Area Important factors in the design execution: creation of vibrant public space, safe harbour area, maximization of economic potentiality (living, leisure and industry), improvement of connectivity and accessibility, especially by public transport. Moreover, there are also interview with Evertvan den Hoek (Concire Consultant, who handles development in Scheveningen Harbour), Ad van der Toorn and Mark Voorendt (Coastal Engineer),theoretical framework by Jan Gehl (New City Life: design of active public space), case study of Bristol and Valletta (diversification of program, density, FAR)
7 Analysis of Spatial Condition and Accessibility in Harbour Area
Three-step analysis, space syntax (topological and metrical), spatial quality, place to sit and stand, building and block morphology, program, building age, accessibility to waterfront area
8 Assignation and Exploration of Three Different Development Scenarios
The scenarios are: Living in the Harbour, Harbour as the Entertainment District and combination of them both
9 Choosing the Most Suitable Scenario for Harbour Area
Assessment criteria involved: economic profitability, accessibility level (especially with public transport: time, provision of direct route), spatialquality (attractiveness and vibrancy of public space)
10 P3 Presentation of the chosen scenario, along with spatial planning on city scale, with overview of analysis on harbour area, final version of threedevelopment scenarios and their assessment, as well as sections
11 Further Design Exploration of the Chosen Plan
Assignation of sitting, standing place, private-public space classification, slow-moving traffic area, child-friendly area, humane public scale; withstudy model 1:400, theoretical framework by Jan Gehl (Life Between Building: factors involved in vibrant public space creation)
12 Calculation and Designation of Program Amount and Cost Involved
Interview with Hans de Jonge (Real Estate and Management) to provide assistance in establishing economic calculation
13 Choosing the Detailed Design Area The most interesting spot, which may be the waterfront area or the reclaimed area14 P4 Presentation of final master plan in harbour area, economic calculation with final study model, sections and 3D perspectives, with overview of
analysis, as well as preliminary detailed plan15 Further Design Exploration of the
Detailed PlanStudy model 1:200, assignation of material, vegetation and other details
16 Making of Final Presentation Material Wooden model of the detailed plan, section and 3D perspectives of the detailed plan, slides presentation with project overview and designintervention

SCENARIO #1living in the harbour
SCENARIO #2harbour as the entertainment district
SCENARIO #3combination of both
ASSESSMENT criteria for scenario assessment
No. Criteria Description1 Economic protability Construction cost and possible capital gain, spatial quality improvement as an impact of the new development, what the
future residents, workers and visitors gain with the new programs and spatial condition, what are the possible public activity and vibrancy that may take place as a development result
2 Accessibility level Accessibility level in the harbour area, especially by public transport (travel time, passenger capacity, connection to key development), as well as accessibilty in/around harbour area by bike, foot and car. Furthermore, which scenario provides more pedestrian area and more direct access to waterfront.
3 Spatial quality Which scenario provides the most attractive waterfront area, public space and key development. Which scenario provides the right amount of density to encourage public space vibrancy, without overcrowding or making the area becomes over touristic
