Project Background: Isolation and Air Tables

• Vibration isolation tables and Optical Breadboards are large surfaces that average in weight from 400 – 2000lbs.

• Dimensions vary from 3-6 feet wide by 6-20 ft. long

• During Academic interim periods and scheduled holidays, these large tables need to be transported around the campus.

Problem StatementVibration Isolation Tables are useful when mounting equipment that are sensitive to local vibrations created by the environment, but they are often bulky and difficult to move. The RIT Mechanical Engineering machine shop has been responsible for relocating these isolation tables when necessary. In doing so, the staff has involved methods that incur several risks. These include but are not limited to: injury to the movers/users, damage to the equipment, and damage to the facilities due to lack of appropriate equipment.

An improved system is desired in order to move these isolation tables in a faster, safer, and more efficient manner. The end solution will result in a tool and training method that allows two people to effectively move the tables from one place to another without damaging the tables or facilities. The table movement solution will also provide a safe environment during transport. The device(s) needs to easily be stored within a specified footprint area in the machine shop in order to avoid interfering with normal operations when not in use.

Problem Summary-•The Mechanical Engineering shop is tasked with moving large loads such as isolation tables around campus via unsafe and insufficient means.•As a team, we are tasked with developing a commercial-grade system that is capable of transporting a variety of loads.

Constraints

• System must utilize a form of rotation in order to fit table geometries through a series of standardized door.

• Must fit in basement storage area

• System must follow safety codes (check to see if OSHA ASME apply)

• System must be able to be operated by two people

• Must fit in freight elevators with table attached.

Design Challenges

• Ensuring Stability of system when in use

• Rotational Manipulation of tables to fit through doorways

• Maintaining a safe and ergonomic design for operators

• Maneuverability over obstructed surfaces
