The Life cycle of a
© Simply Creative Teaching 2017
butterfly A butterfly’s life cycle has four
different stages. A butterfly first
starts out as a tiny egg. The egg is
usually laid on a leaf by a female
butterfly. The female butterfly can lay
up to 500 eggs at a time!
••
Then, a caterpillar, called a larva, hatches from the egg. It usually
looks patchy and has stripes on it. In this stage the caterpillar eats
lots of leaves and flowers to grow! As it grows, it loses its old skin and
grows new skin. This is called molting.
In the next stage, the caterpillar forms a pupa, or chrysalis. This
is the resting stage. The chrysalis has a hard
shell to protect the butterfly that is growing
inside. The butterfly grows its wings in this
stage, even though you can’t see them yet!
Finally, the shell opens and out comes a
butterfly! The butterfly cannot fly yet
because its wings are tiny and wet. It takes
a few hours for it to be able to fly.
