There are three major types of energy.
•Potential energy
•Kinetic energy
•Mechanical energy
Potential Energy: the energy of something NOT in motion. This item has the energy stored inside of it. It is not using the energy right
now.
Potential Energy
When the ball is NOT moving, it is storing its energy.
Usually an object has potential energy because of where it is or
because of its condition.

Kinetic Energy: the energy of moving. If it is moving, it is using
kinetic energy.
Types of kinetic energy:
• Chemical energy
• Electric energy
• Light energy
• Sound energy
• Heat (thermal) energy
• Mechanical energy

When the ball is MOVING, it is using energy.
Kinetic Energy
When you are moving, you are using energy.
Kinetic Energy
When fish are moving, they are using energy.

Mechanical Energy: the energy of something in motion and doing work. Something must be accomplished to be considered work.
