Epiphany Reflection The Christmas Season continues with yet another view of God in our history. In his very flesh, Jesus is the revelation of God. This is a season to celebrate a baby, but even more the manifestation, “epiphany”, of God to the whole world. The gospel warms many hearts with the story of the three visitors to Bethlehem. Following the star, they come to offer gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Aided by the first two readings, we can open up the meaning of this vignette. God is present in our history. This is a gift for all. Whether arriving on dromedaries from Midian and Ephah or bearing gold and frankincense from Sheba, whole nations shall walk by this light. In the early Church, this meant that Gentiles would have to be seen as co-heirs with the Jews, members of the same body. Enjoying the memories and mystery of this day should thus be more than thinking about the three kings. It is also far more important than any technical debate about the translation of “magi” (Greek). They have been called kings, wise men, or astrologers. In any event they signal a day to celebrate God’s manifestation in Christ Jesus. When we celebrate Epiphany we face the mystery of Christ’s identity and our response in faith. Because this revelation is universal, we are presented with a further challenge. Do we treat some as “outsiders” as if were not co-heirs? Do we act as if epiphany were for a few? QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK Matthew 2:1-12 Why do you think the leadership and the people in Jerusalem were "greatly troubled" at news of "the newborn king of the Jews"? Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah announced this prophecy in the aftermath of Israel's seventy-year exile in Babylon, around 500 BC. How do you imagine the Israelites reacted to his vision? Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul startled many of his Jewish contemporaries with the revelation that the Gentile believers in Christ were "coheirs" and "copartners" in the promises God made to Israel. Who would you consider today outsiders to the faith?

The cost is $25.00 per person or $40.00 per family; thanks to the many generous donations we have received, we can offer seats at no charge, if the fee is a problem. Many of our parishioners have made this march year after year; many of those who went last year were not

even born in 1973, when abortion was legalized, yet they want to take a stand. Do you? To make your reservation, contact: Gretchen Cararie at 724-898-2529 or [email protected] or Peggy Hutchinson at 724-586-6620. NOT TRAVELING TO DC FOR THE MARCH FOR LIFE? Come to St. Fidelis, 125 Buttercup Rd., Butler, for a Prayer Hour. The prayer hour will include: Intercessions for Life: Children– born and unborn; Pro-Life Meditations on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary; Recitation of the Prayer for the Unborn written by Pope Benedict XVI and end with The Angelus. According to the center for Disease Control there is: 1 abortion every 26 seconds, 9 abortions every 4 minutes, 137 abortions per day and 1.2 million abortions per year. Please join us on Fri., Jan. 27 from 11:30 am -12:30 pm in St. Fidelis Church for a “Prayer Hour for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”. Questions: Call Tootie Betres at 724-789-7475.

PIETA: A PRO-LIFE ARTWORK BY NIKKI BRUNI This acrylic on canvas is an original rendition of French artist William Bouguereau’s “Pieta”. Within the larger image of Mary & Jesus there are 2,492 tiny faces, representing the lives ended by abortion at Pittsburgh’s Planned Parenthood in 2014. The purpose of the painting is to memorialize each human life by giving them a name. This work is also meant to help us recognize the tragedy of abortion. The painting will be on display at Holy Sepulcher from Jan. 11 through Jan. 18. Please take time to view the painting and reflect upon it’s meaning.

ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL PROGRAMS & DEPAUL SCHOOL FOR HEARING & SPEECH

The Pittsburgh diocese is home to two nationally recognized educational programs for children with speech needs: St. Anthony School Programs & DePaul School for Hearing & Speech. A special collection to benefit these two organiza-tions will be taken next weekend, Jan. 14-15. St. Anthony School Programs provides Catholic special education to children with development delays and autism in five elementary / intermediate classrooms, two secondary classrooms and two college-age programs located on the campuses of Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. St. Antho-ny’s has also partnered with Carlow University to add an academic component to the curriculum for qualified post-secondary students.

DePaul School for Hearing and Speech provides Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) education to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Without the use of sign language, DePaul students learn to listen and speak and successfully transition to their neighborhood schools alongside their peers with typical hearing. Your donation will help St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech to further their goals of providing quality educational programs and services to their students. In addition to supporting children with special needs, your kind donation counts toward your Parish Share Assessment. St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech warmly thank you for your continued support of our missions.

LIVE THE LITURGY Today's feast of the Epiphany

reminds us that Jesus came into the world for all, not just a select

group of people. Into all nations a light has come and

today we reflect on the wonderful gift Jesus gives us in light. If we journey with him, there is always

hope and the darkness of confusion, ignorance, sin, and even death is dispelled. God is with us and knows every aspect

of what it means to be truly human.

NEW YEAR WITH THE BIBLE! Beginning January 17, we will have a 4 week study: “UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF THE BIBLE”. This adult formation course helps to uncover the story of God’s plan woven throughout Scripture.

See Flyer and Registration Form in this bulletin.

The new year and EVANGELIZATION Learn Jesus, Love Jesus, Live Jesus In past weeks, we looked at the first two building blocks of the 8 BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE NEW EVANGELIZATION, set forth for us by Bishop Zubik. The 3rd building block - SPEAK UP: “The world is starving for truth and for the clarity and consolation that comes with faith. We need to speak up in love. We can’t be shy about our faith and its practice. How important it is for us to be vocal about our faith, particularly in prayer, especially with and for others.” We are encouraged to resist the secular influence of keeping our faith to ourselves. Some ways we can do this: bring Jesus into our conversations, asking others for prayer, praying before meals - at home and in public, ask questions, learn about our faith, pray for grace to speak up.

2 Know the FAITH

We are looking forward to celebrating Catholic Schools Week

with the Parish Community the week of

January 29th to February 5th.

O ne central aspect of Catholic Education is learning the importance of service to others. When students

take part in service activities - both local and beyond - they demonstrate the values and faith they gain through their Catholic education and learn how to make the world a better place. When they observe how others serve the community, they gain an appreciation of how they can continue to serve others their entire lives.

During the past month alone, Holy Sepulcher students collected over 150 toys for the Light House; and visited the St. Barnabas Home. During the year the corporal and spiritual works of mercy are a central part of our teaching and practice.

HOLY SEPULCHER RECEIVES A GRANT THROUGH THE AUDUBON SOCIETY Holy Sepulcher will be participating in the Citizen's Science on the School Ground for the next three years! This project enables students to participate in hands-on learning. One goal is for students to get an early start in doing "real" science. Empowering students to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge helps develop a personal vested interest in science. Carrying these habits into their adult lives will help them navigate the hot-button scientific issues that will increasingly be a part of their world --climate change, energy issues, envi-ronmental degradation, along with new issues that will spring up in their lifetimes. One of our goals is to consistently work toward preparing our students to be life-long learners and in order to take their place as strong leaders with Catholic values.
