Blue Mountain is perhaps one of the most visited
places within Charleston Lake Provincial Park. It
was named an Amazing Place by FABN in 2014.
When you arrive at the top you will see 360
degree views of the area. Lakes, forests, rock
ridges, the Adirondack Mountains and of course
Charleston Lake are some of the views you will
see from the top of the mountain. Blue Mountain
is the highest point in the United Counties of
Leeds and Grenville. It can be accessed by
kayak from the Huckleberry Hollow Day-Use site
on Charleston Lake. This area of the park is home
to many amazing plants and animals, many of
which you will experience during your hike. White-
tailed Deer, Osprey, Beavers, Bald Eagles, Pitch
Pine, Grey Ratsnakes, etc. all call this part of the
park home. If you are quiet and observant, you
may have the opportunity to experience some of
these amazing things in person.
The only Charleston Lake Provincial Park
sanctioned access to Blue Mountain is via the
Huckleberry Hollow Day-Use site. This site can
only be reached by canoe or kayak from this
location. Other trails leading to Blue Mountain
cross privately owned land.
When you enter Charleston Lake Provincial Park,
pay the parking fee and proceed to the parking
lot by the boat launch.
Huckleberry Hollow: 44.511869, -75.993864
Hiking books are strongly recommended due to
the variety of terrain including forest trail and
rock outcropping.

The Sandstone Island Trail is a 2.6 km moderate
difficulty trail with an accompanying interpretative
guide developed by the Friends of Charleston
Lake organization. Along the trail, you will see
examples of this region’s geologic and
anthropological history. One of the highlights is
the Gordon Rock Shelter, named an Amazing
Place by FABN in 2016. The shelter, composed
of sediment laid down by Paleozoic seas, was
formed through time by the elements. When the
seas retreated, the sediment hardened into
sandstone and conglomerate which have worn
away by erosion leaving the sandstone overhang
and Precambrian bedrock. The trail moves from
rocky outcroppings to secondary forest, once a
farm and homestead.
Charleston Lake Provincial Park has trails
ranging 2 km to 10 km for all levels of hikers.
When you enter Charleston Lake Provincial Park, pay the parking fee and proceed to the parking lot at Boathouse Cove. Here you can access the trailhead of the Sandstone Island Trail. 44.517012, -76.017259 The trail interpretive guide can be downloadedbefore you go from the Friends of Charleston Lake or a limited amount may be found at the trailhead.
This trail is well marked so it is easy to stay on trail. You can expect hills with some rough spots and minor obstacles. Boots recommended.
