Brooklyn Region News 2 Winter 2013

HBR President's MessageJanet Young

It is hard to believe that another year has come and gone. Hadassahis proud of the wonderful things we did in 2012, and look forward toan even better 2013. Many of us went to Israel in October to celebrateHadassah’s Centennial Anniversary in Jerusalem. It was a spectacularevent filled with many opportunities to see first-hand the miracles

brought about by our unwavering fundraising efforts. The Centennial Celebration kicked-off with a march down Safra Square with 1500 Hadassah men and women. It was aninspirational experience none of us will ever forget. Check out Hadassah’s web site(www.hadassah.org) for details and photos!

Along with our successes, we recall serious issues that impacted us all. October 29, 2012: Either through our own families or friends, there is no doubt that

Brooklyn suffered severely from Hurricane Sandy. Members were left in the dark and withoutpower. Some were left homeless, lost cars and priceless personal items. Some are stilltemporarily living elsewhere while rebuilding, and others have been forced to permanentlyseek new living quarters. I have spoken with many of you and am inspired by your resilienceand determination to bounce back. You all have my deepest respect and heartfelt wishes fora full and speedy recovery in all respects!

Through the darkest times we see the light of the true heart of people. I want to share withyou the amazing efforts personally made by our own Women’s Health Co-Chair, ElaineSarfati and her family. Elaine is a registered nurse who works at the Long Island CollegeNursing School as co-director of the Nursing Center and adjunct assistant professor. Sheunderstood immediately the crisis at hand and initially set out to help a few victims in herhometown of Rockaway, by asking a few local friends to donate home cooked food and drygoods, coats, etc. Then she decided to make this crisis a learning experience for her nursingstudents. Long story short, together they developed a flow chart detailing schedules for thosewho would prepare nutritious home cooked food, donate items, pickup, deliver, and serveat a relief center in Rockaway. Now she has expanded the efforts to include Gerritsen Beach, working with the Gerritsen Volunteer Fire Department (aka “The Vollies”). Having friendsin Gerritsen Beach, I can personally tell you how very appreciative they are. Although thisis not a Hadassah initiative, many of our Hadassah members have stepped up to be a part ofit. Yasher Koach to Elaine, her family, and to everyone else who is volunteering to help.Indeed, they exemplify the type of people who gravitate to Hadassah. It is with great pridethat I report that on January 15th, Elaine Sarfati was honored by Brooklyn Borough PresidentMarty Markowitz for her extraordinary relief work! Her son Sam, who has worked hand inhand with Elaine, accepted for her since she was on vacation at the time.

November 14, 2012: We were home from Israel for only a few weeks and Operation Pillarof Defense began. Hadassah sprang into action. Many high level meetings were held withIsraeli officials, JNR and Hadassah to provide the support needed as efficiently as possible. On November 25, 2012, with National President Marcie Natan leading the historic “StandWith Israel Mission”, 22 members flew to Israel. The Hadassah delegates spent four days inIsrael viewing the missile damage and meeting with Israelis who had undergone the attackand receiving updates from government and civilian experts. They also consulted with theadministration of Hadassah's Jerusalem hospitals about potential security issues. Read BurtKrull’s report in this issue.

Looking forward in 2013, we have many exciting events planned. Come to a wonderfuleducation series with Dr Susan Aranoff: The Book Of Psalms [ ohkv, ]Tehillim: What's it allabout? Who Wrote it? When?, on Wednesday, February 20 and Thursday, February 28 (seeflyer inside). We had standing room only at last year’s winter series with Susan. Don’t getclosed out. Send in your registration today! And don’t forget to join us for our fabulousAnnual Purim Concert on Monday, February 25 at the Jewish Center of Kings Highway (seeflyer inside).

Browse this bulletin and read all about other upcoming Brooklyn Region Events as well asarticles from our chapters. There are many opportunities to get out and have some fun witha little food and schmooze thrown in. Remember, it doesn’t matter what chapter you belongto. You are welcome, with open arms, to attend events at all our chapters. Contact the officeif you have any questions, Esther will gladly try her best to help you.

We need to remember our primary mission is to raise funds for theextraordinary work that Hadassah is counted on to do. To that end, I am urgingyou to keep Hadassah in mind this Purim season and mail in a Purim donationpayable to Hadassah to Hadassah, 50 W 58th Street, Po Box 745, New York Ny10101-0745.

Brooklyn Region News 3 Winter 2013

On Sunday, November 18, 2012 almost 200 womenand men spent an informative morning and afternoonhearing from many speakers and panelists regardingthese vital topics affecting Hadassah Hospital as wellas the country of Israel.

We first heard from Hila Elroy, Advisor to ConsulGeneral of Israel in NY. She updated us on the diresituation occurring...the launching of over 600 rocketstowards communities near Gaza and as far reaching asTel Aviv. She stated that following the 2nd Intifada in2000, it has been a well-known fact that the Palestineissue is not one of land – but of the existence of theJewish people as a Nation. A demonstration was beingplanned for Tuesday, November 20th to make ourvoices heard in front of the Israeli Consulate on 2ndAvenue.

Due to this emergency, our National President,Marcie Natan, was at the hospital and visited otherHadassah sites: Young Judaea, Youth Aliyah, southernIsrael and Hadassah's Colleges. Young Judaea studentswere relocated from Tel Aviv – many volunteered tohelp where needed.

What could we do? Marcie urged us to: 1) contactlocal Media and Press to correct misrepresentedinformation that is aired and written; 2) contribute tothe Readiness Fund – monies made available as neededin Israel; 3) participate in the Solidarity Missionscheduled for 11/26-30 going to Israel; and 4) initiatean e-mail blitz to the White House, US Representatives,US Senators, Assemblymembers, thanking them fortheir past support and outlining the current issues.

From Hadassah Hospital, Dr. Ehud Kokia issued astatement regarding ongoing attacks from Gaza. FortyHMO employees had been called to active duty. Thehospital was on ready alert if it became necessary torespond in an emergency situation and hospitalsecurity had to be upgraded. Despite these challenges, medical care of patients was uninterrupted and ourhigh level research was unaffected. Addressing thegroup on the latest medical advances underway atHadassah Hospital was Dr. Gadi Lalazar, Dept. ofInternal Medicine. His specialty is liver disease andtransplants. Dr. Lalazar described the breakthroughsmade in the following areas: genetics, lung cancer, stemcell and liver disease. The project focuses on mappinggenes, doing pre-emptive treatment, mobilizing cellsfrom bone marrow, cancer therapy, and targeting

cancer cells without harming the surrounding healthycells. The stem cells are isolated and caused todifferentiate and then are replaced into the humanbody. This method is used to treat diabetes, maculardegeneration and Parkinson's (ALS-MS) in clinicaltrials. Ongoing studies in liver cancer- using CO2measurements in exhaled breath – assesses liverfunction and metabolism. If output is extreme, the livertransplant - gene therapy is indicated.

Literature: Anna Funder, author of All That I Amspoke about the inspiration and background for herbook. The setting is pre-Hitler war time, 1933. It was atime of progressive thinking. The book follows fouryoung adults and explores the bravery and betrayal, the risks and sacrifices some people make for theirbeliefs. Through Ms.Funder's selected readingof several passages onefelt the strength of hercharacters – filled withemotion, bonds offriendship and love.

Advocacy and LegalIssues: Justice and theJews – A Look atContemporary andHistorical Legal Cases.Members of the legalpanel, Rhonna Rogol,Norine Krasnogor, andAlyza Lewin addressedfuture status of Jerusalemas yet to be determined:Can we mark the “place of birth” as “Israel” onpassports issued to citizens born in Jerusalem?Immigration, international law, countering bias againstIsrael with the use of the law are matters currentlybeing dealt with.

What an informative and inspiring day! Theaudience received the latest, up-to-date details onmedical research and treatments, legal advice andaction and a new literary publication. What wouldHenrietta think? I think that Henrietta would bedelighted that her organization, Hadassah, continuesto add members worldwide, is expanding its scientificresearch, administers medical treatment to all those inneed, regardless of ethnicity or religious background.

Go Forth and StudyOur group began its second year with our last book aboutPrime Ministers, SHIMON PEREZ and in January we begana series of novels. Laura Goldberg led the discussion on TheLittle Russian by Susan Sherman. The book tells the story ofBerta who as a companion to a distant cousin lives a life ofluxury in Moscow but now must return to her parent'ssmall village and store. She is unhappy until she meetsHershel and begins to live in luxury again unaware of herhusband's activities for the Bund. What then ensues madefor an exciting novel. On Monday, April 8th we will be dis-cussing a love story set in Israel, The Pigeon and a Boy byMeir Shalev. Join us for our informative and interesting dis-cussions.

The Leadership Training group completed itsfourth and final sessions in December, a monthlater than planned due to the hurricane. Mentorsmet the women they would be working withduring the remainder of the programming year. The program was successful, largely due to thehard work of Esther Lefkowitz, Janet Young, GailHammerman, Roni Schwartz and MarleneLempert.

The Leadership Training Sessions seriesculminated a few days later as a group of us wentto Hadassah House in Manhattan for lunch. RoniSchwartz, former Brooklyn Region President andCurrent Hadassah National Vice-President,arranged the visit. Certificates were presented andwe had a chance to meet and talk with NationalPresident Marcie Natan. Marcie spoke to us aboutthe situation in Israel and how Hadassah met withthe Israeli government to specifically determinehow to best address current and future needs.Brooklyn Region President Janet Young surprisedme by presenting me with a National CentennialLeadership Award. We all felt honored to be there.

I am pleased to announce that we are nowinvolved in our second phase of the program. Ourmentors are now actively working with theirmentees to incorporate their leadership skills andthe program’s guidelines into their everydayHadassah lives. This is an ongoing process that hasalready proven to be very successful. UPDATE

Fundraising Report Alma Krull V.P. Fundraising

January begins the new fiscal year forHadassah. It's the time of year when wemake resolutions for ourselves for the NewYear. Let’s include Hadassah as one of ournew commitments for the year to come.

Hadassah's focus is on healing, teaching, and educating. Donations we give to theorganization go towards one of these goals,or towards the goal of our choice. If each ofus pledged $30 a month for Hadassah, itwould mean $360 a year for Hadassah'sextraordinary projects. This money would godirectly to Brooklyn Region, but would becredited to your chapter. This would beabove and beyond any money we give to ourchapter. It would enroll each of us as amember of Brooklyn's Chai Society. It wouldalso entitle us to an invitation to the ChaiSociety event on May 5, 2013 with a veryspecial Hadassah speaker.

Consider making this New Year's promiseto yourself and for Hadassah. If you decideto credit the money towards the new Tower, remember, there is a matching grant formoney given to the Tower. Any questions, please feel free to contact Alma Krull.

TAMAR CHAPTERRuth N. Siegel

There are never too many times to wisheach other a happy new year. With somany local, state and national calamitiesoccurring the last few months it has beendifficult to stay focused on Hadassahalone. However, for those of us fortunateenough to have attended the RegionChanukah Party, the excellence of theprogram that day with the variety ofreports we heard from, outside speakersas well as our own leaders, has put us“back on track”.

Tamar will proudly announce, at ourprojected March meeting, now in it’splanning stage, that we will make a sub-stantial gift to National Hadassah inmemory of a much beloved past co-pres-ident Norma Wolf. Our members havebeen most generous in donating to thisfund. Join us at that time. We are warmand welcoming, an antidote to “thefrightful weather outside”.

MEDINAH CHAPTEREvelyn Pincus

Our first get together after our summer recess, was an OnegShabbat at the home of our President, Shirley Kafker. Our memberscame out in numbers and we had a delightful afternoon with avery gracious hostess. Region President Janet Young was our guestspeaker ate our September meeting, our fist of the fall session. Itgave us a chance to greet and visit with our new Region President. She brought us up to date on all the Hadassah Happenings in thestates and in Israel. All ears were tuned in to her wonderful, informative talk. At our October meeting, we had a conventionreport from Maxime Zalstein. It was so precise, that we were ableto really share in the convention as if we were in Israel.

In November we had our fall luncheon get together at theMirage. It was a lovely afternoon with greetings of love andaffection with our members and friends. Thanks to MaximeZalstein for chairing. We also had a book review led by JaneGleiberg on Bernardo Malamud’s “The Assistant”. Her bookreviews are always well received and a question/answer periodfollowed. In December at our open meeting, Sara Sloan spoke on“Tales of Famous Jewish Women”. Her talk was most enjoyable,as always. We wished we had more time for her to continue. Onnew years day 2013 we had our annual luncheon at Three Star. Thiswas our yearly end of season fling. We take a recess in January andFebruary.

We continue to sell all greeting cards, trees, HMO certificates andMah Jongg cards.

Rabbi Hirsch’s message wasthat the state of Israel keeps the Jewish people alive. It is more than a refuge forJews. His presentation was followed by a great question and answer session whichhad everyone chatting well after the event ended. We all look forward to the nextevent. DENA CHAPTERSheila Silverman

We closed the year of 2012 with the sobering happeningsof Hurricane Sandy and the unspeakable tragedy inNewton, Mass. Our Mitzvah Day involvement, whichalways coincides with Chanukah, gave all of our membersthe opportunity to contribute toys for the children of thehurricane. We were thrilled to be able to donate seven sacksof toys to the United States Marines for their Toys for Totsprogram. Members followed the advice of Marcy Natan bycontributing trees for the Hadassah Forest in Beersheva, inmemory of those twenty six innocents who lost their lives inMass.

On February 6th, our giant Purim Party will bring greatfun and help to melt the cold of winter. The festivities willbe held at the newly reopened Gargiulos. To brighten ourcelebration of Purim, Dena also specializes in its very ownPurim cards; used as “low calorie” substitutes for chocolatyMishloach Manot. On March 11th we have a Book andAuthor Buffet Luncheon, when Ellen Greenfield will discussher publication, Come from Nowhere. In May, our membersand friends will honor the contributions made to DenaHadassah by Judy Hibshoosh, Susan Kiel and AudreyPowerstein.

So that we may continue to serve Hadassah, it is our fer-vent hope that we will enjoy all of our events and meetingsin an atmosphere of peace.

HMO UPDATE Claire Shapiro, HMO Chair

Initiated in Israel, Clinical Trial for InnovativePancreatic Cancer Treatment Expands to United States

A clinical trial with TL-118—a new treatment for metastatic pancreatic cancer—that has been ongoing at theHadassah University Medical Center and three other oncology centers in Israel, has been expanded to the UnitedStates.

Produced by Tiltan Pharma,TL-118 belongs to the family of angiogenesis-inhibiting drugs, which means it inhibitsnew blood vessel formation in tumors and thus cuts off their blood supply and growth. Angiogenesis, the processby which new blood vessels are formed, is a hallmark capability of cancer cells. Anti-angiogenic therapy has, therefore, emerged as a most promising strategy with solid tumors, which rely on aggressive angiogenesis for theirgrowth.

The new United States trial will be conducted at White Plains (NY) Hospital, and will include patients who havebeen newly diagnosed withmetastatic pancreatic cancer andnot yet treated with anychemotherapy. A control groupwill receive standardchemotherapy, while thetreatment group will receive TL-118 in addition to chemotherapy.

Dr. Dan Costin, Co-MedicalDirector of the White PlainsHospital cancer program andPrinciple Investigator for the TL-118 study at While Plains Hospital, related: “We are happy tointroduce this cutting-edgetherapy to our pancreatic cancerpatients. Unfortunately, metastaticpancreatic cancer is a disease withvery poor prognosis and we areurgently seeking new solutionsthat might enhance survival.”

TL-118 was initially tested in amouse model of pancreatic cancer. In these pre-clinical studies, TL-118 monotherapy inhibited tumorgrowth significantly, as comparedto the standard-of–carechemotherapy. Moreover, whenTL-118 therapy was combinedwith standard-of-carechemotherapy, the tumors wereeliminated in all the treatedanimals.

To date, over 1,000 cancerpatients have been treated withTL-118 for up to four years, according to Tiltan Pharma, jointlyowned by Yissum, the HebrewUniversity’s Technology TransferCompany, and other investorsfrom Israel and Canada.

Brooklyn Region News 14 Winter 2013

I returned from convention, dealt with HurricaneSandy and then the “Pillars of Defense” war inIsrael. I made the decision to join a Hadassahsolidarity mission to Israel with tenHadassah leaders from around the US.The mission was led by MikiSchulman, Marlene Post, AudreyShimron and BG.

From the airport last Monday wewent directly to the Gaza area visitingAshkod, Ashkelon and Sderot. 1500rockets had been fired into southernIsrael causing substantial damage. TheIsraeli Iron Dome System intercepted80%.

We were briefed by generals, the spokeswomanfor the IDF, the Minister of Homeland Security, theDirector General of finance, a Palestinian/Israelijournalist and Hadassah senior medical staff. Wevisited a high school in Ashkelon where part of theroof and two classrooms were totally destroyedand then met with the teachers and students tohear their stories. We did the same when travelingto Beersheba, visited two bombed homes and theninterviewed the occupants. A siren began to blastsending everyone scurrying, but luckily it was afalse alarm. Each of these families had kids whowere called up to active service just a few weeksago. Both parents and the young soldiers sharedvery emotional testimonies, as there was fear of aground invasion.

We visited the Ministry of defense in Tel Aviv. Anunbelievable complex of secure buildings withheliports and underground control centers (anIsraeli Pentagon). We spent considerable time withAvi Shichter, the Minister of Defense. We then wentto Bat Yam to the college, where Young Judaeansfrom America are volunteering while on a one yearprogram. When the rockets were hitting Tel Aviv, the group was transferred for safety and helpedpack supplies for the IDF. None of these young

students wanted to return home and felttremendously connected to the emergency, givingthem insight to the Israeli way of life.

We were briefed at Ein Keren at the undergroundemergency security unit and discussed how tocreate a more stable environment for treatingtrauma, especially for the kids in the Gaza bordertowns.

This Hadassah mission was close in time to thecease fire and much appreciated both by thegovernment officials and private sector.Gentlemen, when asked who I was, how proud toanswer, “I am Hadassah.”

The most important message that I can convey isthat we cannot take for granted the existence of theState of Israel. We must understand that the battletoday is in the media and we need to remember tobe sure of our facts when defending Israel from delegitimization. Naivety, apathy and ignorance arethe worst enemy of Israel because they are beingused very cleverly in the media war. That is moredangerous than any battle fought in the field.

When world Jewry falls into the trap of notunderstanding or not having a grasp of the truefacts, we face a bigger danger than ever before. Asone general told us, “The state of Israel, given to us64 years ago, is a gift. We cannot afford to lose itbecause we won’t get it back again.”

Thank you for this opportunity.Burt Krull

C H A I S O C I E T Y

Hello from sometimes sunny Florida. Just want to keep youupdated on the latest in the Bar Bat Mitzvah Project world.

In February, my husband Marty will reach 70, a special birthday. We wanted to share and celebrate with our friends but Marty feltthat he did not want to burden friends and family with "whatshould I get him?" frustrations.

The following note was enclosed with the invitation: “Dear Family and Friends,I am hoping that you will be able to join in our celebration..............In lieu of gifts, I am requesting that you make a donation to

HADASSAH. I would like to raise funds to purchase sportingequipment for a Youth Aliyah Village for disadvantaged youth inIsrael. If you choose to do this, please bring a check, made payableto HADAASAH, in an envelope with your name on it to the party. The checks will be forwarded to the National Office.”

I have received very positive feedback from the invitees, and wanted to share this method (internet free) way of raisingfunds for Youth Aliyah.

If you or your loved ones are planning any special birthdays, events or parties and would like to follow in my husbandsfoot steps and forgo any gifts in exchange for monetary donations to Hadassah, please feel free to contact me and I will getyou started.

Wishing you and your families a good year.

My Mitzvah Project Sheila Katz , Bar-Bat Mitzvah Chair
