• Youngstown State made three NCAA Division I-AAplayoff appearances during Dantonio’s tenure there.

• Coached in 15 bowl games, including the 2002 FiestaBowl national championship.

Mark Dantonio has established himself asone of the nation’s up-and-coming headcoaches during his two seasons at the Univer-sity of Cincinnati.

During that time, Dantonio has led theBearcats to a bowl game victory, directed theteam’s transition into the BIG EAST Conferenceand established the groundwork for the fu-ture success of the program.

Fifteen of his players have earned all-con-ference honors. Twenty-five have receivedconference academic recognition. Six mem-bers of his first squads were on the rosters ofof National Football League teams last fall.Eighteen members of the 2004 team com-pleted their degrees.

Dantonio, who was named head coach atCincinnati on Dec. 23, 2003, became the firsthead coach in 23 years to pilot a team to awinning season in his initial campaign at UC.The Bearcats’ 7-5 record included a 5-3 mark

in Conference USA, good enough for a second placefinish. The Bearcats capped the season with a con-vincing 32-14 win over Marshall in the PlainsCapitalFort Worth Bowl.

During the 2005 season, Dantonio molded ateam that ranked among the nation’s youngest—the Bearcats started as many as five first-year fresh-men on defense—to be a competitive squad intheir first season in the BIG EAST en route to a 4-7record.

The development of those young players, plusthe additon of another strong recruiting class, por-tends a bright future for Cincinnati football underDantonio.

Only one other coach has taken UC to a bowlgame in his initial season at the helm—the leg-endary Sid Gillman—a feat that puts Dantonio inpretty select company. Dantonio has been in goodcompany throughout his coaching career, havingserved as an assistant coach for Nick Saban, JimTressel and Earle Bruce—coaches who have di-

rected teams to conference championships, postseason bowls, and national championships.

Dantonio has compiled nearly a quarter of acentury of coaching experience, during which he hasplayed integral roles in building winning programs. He has crafted defensive units which have been na-tionally recognized. And he has built a reputationfor the close bonds that he builds with the playershe coaches and the staff members with whom heworks with.

He has strong Midwest ties. An Ohio native whohas spent half of his coaching career in the state,Dantonio has been effective recruiting its top tal-ent.

Dantonio had served as the defensive coordi-nator at Ohio State the previous three seasons, where he helped craft the defense which was thebackbone of the Buckeyes success.

Ohio State's defense was the nation's secondstingiest against the run in 2003, allowing 62.3 yardsper game, and was ranked No. 10 in total defenseand No. 16 in scoring defense. Those efforts helpedthe Buckeyes attain the No. 4 ranking in the finalpolls.

Dantonio assembled the defense which ledOhio State to the national title in 2002. The Buck-eyes were second nationally in scoring defense(13.1) and third in rushing defense (77.7) duringtheir perfect season.

Six Buckeye defenders were named first teamAll-Big Ten during Dantonio’s tenure there and 13were drafted by the pros, which includes a pair offirst-round picks.

Dantonio has compiled 23 seasons of coachingexperience in the college ranks, 12 of them in thestate of Ohio.

Prior to his stint at Ohio State, Dantonio spentsix seasons (1995-2000) as secondary coach atMichigan State, five under Nick Saban and one un-der Bobby Williams. He was promoted to associatehead coach in 2000.

Dantonio contributed to Michigan State’s suc-cessful 1999 season, during which the Spartansposted a 10-2 record, were Florida Citrus Bowl cham-pions and were ranked No. 7 in the final polls. TheMSU defense was ranked 12th nationally and ledthe Big Ten in total defense.

Michigan State’s secondary under Dantoniowas regarded as one of the best in the nation. TheSpartans were ranked 10th in pass efficiency de-fense in 1998 and seventh in 2000.
